'Gents I figure it's soon getting to the point in the year when people start asking for info/hookups on finding vacation or graduate roles for the following year.

Last year I was in the same boat and got a whole bunch of really good advice from people on here, and IRL. Just wondering if there's anybody on here in who'd be interested in that for this year, as I'd be more than happy to share all the tips, resume/cover letter writing, and assessment centre advice I got.

Would be keen for any tips advice you could give thanks.

having been working about 2 years now in an engineering company however its not what i want to do and even though i will cover my vac work. i want to find something in a larger company

If you've done enough for vac work, I think you, in particular, should be concentrating on actually finishing degree lol. :p

Which industry are you trying to get in to?

i am currently working for a company which mainly does electrical engineering work. I am looking for something in project management or mech design.

and that is the plan but doesn't hurt to get your foot in the door with a good company before you finish

Best thing to do is find out if your family runs a successful business.

Then, do a degree which ensures that you will inherit that business when you've finished the degree.

Has worked for several AL members.

I got some great advice (and a job) in this thread.
My resume was not that good, mainly because I didn't yet have any engineering experience. I listed all of my academic awards at Uni and mentioned the skills learned from working on cars.

You really have to apply everywhere. PM me if you want a list of engineering companies, so you an flog your email off to as many places. Paul (jerk) was right though, you have to be a little pushy to stand apart. I called heaps of medium sized companies and asked to speak to they HR department. Was polite and business like and asked a couple of questions about their vacation program and how I might apply. I found one in two HR girls to be really pleasant, for fun you can stalk them on linked in after, see if they are fit. I haven't used linked in yet, I figure that's something to use when you've got some experience behind you. But I may be wrong.

Once you get an in, like someone you know or someone on here offers to take your resume, follow it up. Send that shit out like crazy! And follow up if you don't hear back from them. Also if someone offers to help hand it out its always a good idea to ask them what they think of your résumé if they have time, they may give you some pointers on content.

The trick is to be pushy, without seeming too be pushy. If someone offers you a chance take it!

Depends what engineering type you're doing, and what year you're at.
General tips:
- Get the list of engineering companies off TheChad
- CALL THEM ALL, do not email until you've talked to them
- Go to the engineering seminar (normally at claremont showgrounds), meet the HR people there and get their cards... make an impression knowing a little bit about the company and follow-up with an email
- Go for the bigger companies where possible as their grad programs will be more focused on you're learning.
- If you get multiple offers, don't necessarily jump at the higher paid one... wage increases vary significantly throughout companies

Give some more information and I'll help where I can.
