View Full Version : Found this little sucker, can kill 26 adults within mins

Well guys, just be aware when out swimming/snorkling around reefs in Perth.
Never mind great whites and other sharks. This is what you need to fear. Enough venom to kill 26 adults in min. Venom 10,000 times more toxic than cynide.
I was standing in the basin at Rotto. The most popular swimming hole at rotto. This is where ALOT of kids swim and pretty much everyone.

I stayed the night on the island and was first to this location. Standing up to my hips deep i noticed this litte occy swim over to my legs to take shelter from the open area of the basin.
Wasnt till it was under me i noticed the blue rings. Got the hell away from it but then snorkled over, I had the go pro and got great vid. First image its not pissed, other pics it was flashing the blue rings saying GET AWAY!
If bitten you wound feel the bite as it has an anethetic, you go bling within 5 min then all your organs fail. You need CPR for 2-3 hours and though this whole time you are concious but paralised.
Be aware people, may have been my last day on the planet yesterday
Trust me to find it lol

Lucky you managed to see it mate, a lot of people don't realise how small they actually are/what they are untill its too late.
I remember when i was younger exploring the beach up at Dampier when the tide was out and there was one in a little pool next to me and i didn't even know untill my old man told me to move away because he recognised it.

They look incredible with the blue flashing. Ive snorkled there heaps and have never seen one. You certainly seem to have a knack for finding strange things.

It's amazing there isn't more incidents with these little bad boys. I remember the first time I saw one. They are small. Golf ball size small. Pretty freaky.
Great photo's btw.

A mate was once diving for prawns had a close encounter. While diving he decided to get a few kg of mussels. Went grabbed a few catch bags full and came up on to the boat, then sorting them out by hand he picked one up by accident, thng was resting in his palm before he realised wtf it was.
He shat hard, drop the thing and it flared up with the blue rings. It now rests in a small vegemite jar, preserved.

Well... That's me done. Not going swimming in the ocean ever again.
You have some balls swimming up to it after spotting it the first time. I would have run out of the water and never gone back. The venom from those things is just ridiculous.

I had heard about them here but never seen one before. What freaks me out is the amount of kids there with little nets catching star fish etc. Really wanted to tel everyone to be carefull. I told a few familys and the life guards did there best

They are everywhere over east but I've never heard of one over here.

Blue ring octopus are ok, stone fish scare me more - one of the most intense pains you can have, lasts 4-6hrs and kills
Often, but is treated by putting the limb in hot water (60+), where in the hot water it's ok, as soon as you take it out the pain comes back
One of my Uni lecs has been stung by them a few times, 2nd time he just poured boiling water on it as the pain from the burn was less than the sting
Wow was swimming at the Basin a few days ago, I cut my foot on the reef and ran back to shore incase it attracted a shark haha
Also didn't know they were in WA, well not Rotto/Metro area anyway..

This, occie would tend to swim off and they have small mouth etc so chance of being bitten is pretty low.
Stonefish will sit there and wait for you to step on the bastard and kill you.

Saw one of these little bastards a few years back at Coogee Beach (my local beach). It was inside a glass coke bottle. Not sure what was done to it, but I never realised how fucking small they are. /CSB
The colours on the thing are pretty amazing, especially when it starts to go into the reef.

Used to see them at Point Peron diving in the caves there all the time.
Pretty cool the amount of stuff you see if you stop and pay attention.
Everytime I've been to the Basin I've seen at least one dugite, most people just walk around them.

sounds abit like a cobler fish. stepped on one when i was 14 in geraldton, they arent deadly though, just cause a shitload of pain, had to of bee nthe most pain ive been in. Got to hospital nurse just put my foot in hot water, pain iinstantly went away, water got cold unbearable pain came back, nurse had to keep bringing back more hot water every 10 minturs for about an hour til a doctor could come put a needle in my foot to numb the pain to the next two days. Thats all they do for ya til the posion wears off ya.

wtf! didnt know you could find these in perth!Blue-ringed octopus are all around Australia. There's a different species along the colder south-coast waters but it uses the same neurotoxin and has the blue rings.
They're also found all through se-asia, india and some of the north-west of africa, or so google tells me.
Seen one in Esperance while swimming on my own as a kid, knew what they were.
Dacks suitably crapped.

Shit myself today, was walking through the shallow waters near Rockingham and sharp intense pain in my foot struck me all of a sudden.
Screamed pulling my foot out of the water to see what t was as was worried it was something poisonous. Turns out just a crab casually pincing my foot, little bastard was attacking my mate trying to get it off me as well lol
Well... That's me done. Not going swimming in the ocean ever again.

LOL POOF its not like its out to kill it or going to "attack" you unless you try to finger it or in your case eat it. poor little bastards used to get them all the time on the reefs of our old sheep station.
do recall a fair while back a dude got bitten by one whilst out fishing and being its some nasty little neurotoxin causing paralysis to shit like your diaphram nall the other good stuff what not (i think) his mate performed CPR on him for like 40mins or more essentially keeping him alive until help arrived and he survived it.

Never really got into studying sealife, to me that shits cray
I remember about 5 years ago being 30km off the coast of Broome fishing off my mates boat, feet dangling just in the water. Casually look down and see a fucking sea snake come out from under the boat just chilling, was about an inch away from touching my feet & glad I didn't find out what it's reaction would be.. Lucky for me I'd read up about them a few days earlier & found out unless u get treatment within about 10mins or so you're probably gonna cark it..

Most sea snakes can't bite you though, unless your unlucky enough to get caught between the fingers/toes.. Then there's the fact they rarely ever bite, have had one coil around my reg whilst diving, they're fairly harmless

So you don't even have to be bitten - it's the mucus on the outside?
I know we've had an increase in shark attacks recently, but considering the amount of dangerous shit out there, it's surprising there aren't more fatalities annually from wildlife.

^^ The neurotoxin is a product of bacteria produced in its saliva, but there's evidence that it can pass through its flesh and skin in small quantities.

Anyone been stung by a blue bottle or seen one before? I would have only been about 12 or 13 and found one on the beach at Trigg and not knowing what it was i picked it up and got stung about three times by it. Ive never to this day felt anything as painful as that and I have been pretty acident prone over the years.
And now I keep my white ass out of the water and stay in the pool instead.

I had a funny experience with a blue bottle. Fishing at Hamelin bay. We were offshore in a boat and my mate yelled out to reel lines in as we were moving spots.
I was the last to reel my line in and as it came up it looked like i snagged someones blue line. As i untangled it ( around 2 meters) i wrapped it around my hand as a tight bundle. It was just about the consistancy of fishing line, maybe a little softer. After around the 10 wind around my hand i realised it was a blue bottle tentical. My hand was on fire and my glands swelled up. Even a little bit i flicked off got my mate and he was in pain. For some reason his groin was hurting ( glands) he was screaming. I wasnt that bad but each person must have different tollerance. Fuck forgive my grammer, cant be fuked going back though it fixing it lol
