Might be a bit of old news, but as of Jan 14, learners will be allowed to ride bikes up to 650 odd cc as long as they meet required power to weight ratio etc. LAMS is now over here in WA.
Basically there is more variety to choose from including frame sizing etc which makes it easier/more affordable with choices etc. I was looking for a while being hesitant due to frame size and motor limitations for my height/weight, but seems a bit more feasible now.

but there is still the R-E > R phase that we all have to go thru :(.
im thinking of learning to ride, so this rule does come in handy in letting me practise on a slightly larger cc bike.

Whats R-E ?
Does that mean you can only ride a 250cc bike ?.........oh ok then cause every one actually sticks to riding a 250
Small bikes are awesome fun a key part of learning.

If my understanding is not wrong, R-E = restricted for the first year. so before the rules came in, you could only ride <250cc, anything >250cc had to wait after the first year or until you got the restriction taken off.
whats a good way to get started on a bike? im not looking to get rid of my car, but rather to pick up another skill for those overseas travels in countries where cars arent as common
whats a good way to get started on a bike?
Have lessons, sit test, pass, buy a 250 for a year...
have lessons, sit test, pass, buy a big bike that gives you wood every time you ride it..

there is some powerful power-weight ratio bikes in the ok list ..
rgv 250 etc are out but they have listed ktm 380 cc 2 stroke , and 450 enduro bikes that make 50 odd hp for 110 odd kg.. which in hands of novice could be just as dangerous as the rgv's
luckily i dont have to deal with this shit .. got my big bike lic on my 18th bday .. so have always been able to ride whatever i want .. and
also u watch they start with bikes .. next step is cars and p plate laws .. be a list of cars that be black listed from p platers soon enough
wa is always 1 step behind , but catching up slowly to other state laws/rules

Lams in my opinion is a good thing, won't take much for some people to bin a lot of those bikes on the list but it is definetly an advantage to the more experienced 250 riders.

There's still a fuck loa of people binning ninja 250's and cbr250's u only have to read the 250 thread on PSB or check the auction sites.
LAMs is a good thing allows people of larger frame to be comfortable on a bike rather than break the law ad jump straight on a cbrzxgsxr1 and ride like a bell end.
Now if only they included x amount of track time in getting ur lic would make huge difference

Its not the bike that is making people bin it its the rider. It doesn't matter what bike you ride if your a dick head your a dick head. Simple.

so how would that work for someone that doesnt have access to/live anywere close to a track to get track experience.
im loving the lams rule, crf450x motard very soon.My bro inlaw just sold his 400cc honda rvf 400 becuase he couldnt legally ride it over here. he will be pissed when i tell him this, being from sydney he was allowed to ride it.

Exactly the reason this is good news for me, Im no giant in height (around 6' 4") but weight is a big factor, makes it a little easier to find something that might suit.

yeah i know its not an ideal situation for everyone. But in 2 track days (1 collie 1 barbs) i have learnt more about how my bike handles and how to make it do what i want than in 3.5 years of road riding.
May not enhance the most legal aspect of riding a road bike but it has definetly improved the fun factor, i have gone from being completly unco, looking at the wrong things, body in the wrong way shitting myself on a corner to being smooth, relaxed and tipping into a corner at 170kph+ with ease.

Just bought a 250... Fml :( Probably a blessing in disguise though.
All it means is 250 bikes will no longer fetch crack pipe money!

even better as it means i can afford to buy a bike to learn on. trash it, and take it as a learning curve without burning a massive hole in my pocket.
