Long story short, on the way to work, someone turns into my car and I hit it front/side on. Car has been towed and is at the insurer's place. It is the other driver's fault and there was a cop car behind her at the time who witnessed everything and they issued her with an infringement on the spot.

Now, my car is undrivable and I need a car to get to work. Speaking to my insurance company (SGIO), they said they could arrange for me at my cost and I would be able to claim the hire costs back on the at fault party's insurance, IF the she have insurance. Is there any way I can find this out or do I just wait and make a call back to my insurer to find out? I'm assuming this would be the easiest way to go rather than organize for a hire car myself as the insurance company will chase her insurer for the claims.

As there were cops attending, they took down all the details which I will need to get my hands on the report for I assume. Would appreciate if anyone has been through similar can comment. Thanks.

Call her and ask if she's insured. Recovery of your hire vehicle costs may take a while but if she is insured, then you're pretty set to get a return as your paid invoice will form part of the Recovery/your demands.

If she isn't insured, and a hire vehicle benefit isn't part of your policy (which I assume it isn't otherwise SGIO would've organised one for you through their supplier) then getting your money back through her may not happen.

She told me her car was insured but I want to confirm before I get SGIO to organise a rental for me. Best way to do this? Call up her insurance and ask quoting the police report number?

Ask her for her policy number so you can call her insurer for peace of mind.

You can also call her insurer and hope she's lodged it with them already, that too, would confirm for you her policy is in effect.

Try Acorn Rentals (http://www.acornrentals.com.au/) depending on the other parties insurer (and their experience if they can claim) they can provide you a Hire Car at no cost and charge the other parties company directly.

Tried to use them with my Mrs's car when it was run into parked, but they didnt have much luck claiming against RACWA
