Well after nearly 5 years my s15 is finally back up and running. The final tune should be finished any day now and im looking at getting it out onto the track for a bit of a 'shake down' and to have some fun - not going out to break any records but doing some track days is something I've always wanted to do.
Before hitting the track i have a few questions for the more experienced guys.
1. Helmets, can you have an open face helmet? Do they need to met any regulations/standards? I recall something about a new ASNZ standard? I was looking at getting this: (would it be ok?)
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SPARCO-PRO-JET-HELMET-OPEN-FACE-SZ-MEDIUM-targa-racing-cams-track-race-/140872075489?pt=AU_Cycling_Clothing&hash=item20cca148e1
2. How do i go about go about getting the required license and what type of license do i need to participate in the occasional track day ?
thanks
Johnny

1. There is 2 Helmet shops on Albany Highway, East Victoria Park. I would suggest you head there because you will really want to try on the helmet to see if it fits well before you buy. They can be had from $100. Any reason for Open Face? I wouldn't get one because you can always just flip the visor in the car of a normal one and you won't be able to use an open face for other stuff (karting or riding a motorbike etc)
2. Cams Level 2 Speed http://www.cams.com.au/Forms/~/media/Files/Forms/Competitor%20Forms/Lv%202%20License%20application%20renewal.ashx

i want an open face because i don't wanna feel 'choked' kind of thing in the car and for me it gives better vision. I have two motocross style helmets already but yeah sitting in the car with them they don't feel comfortable.
will definitely try one on locally first, i was using that as an example of the helmet i want to get. Do you know the names of the places in Victoria park?
Edit:
I'm assuming i need the L2S license?
Correct on liscence - just purchase on the day of your first track event.
Motocross helmets aren't allowed in any event I've done.
Full face is the way to go for safety - the visibility thing isn't as bad as you might think. You don't actually need the perifferal vision as much. It will also make you look towards the apex more.
Also do some research on how to drive fast, lines, corners, braking etc.. it makes it a whole lot more fun when you understand what an I structor or more experienced person is trying to say.

I got an BELL MAG 1 (Club/Entry Level) Helmet from Revolution Racegear for $230.00 during a clear-out sale.

Its a great helmet for me. I am only going to be doing Drags, Motorkhana and the odd Track Day.

i much prefer open faced helmet for the comfort myself
If its at wanneroo, you will need a CAMS L2S licence, application can be made via their website.
If you are an ALM member you can put them down as your club, if your not then get on it!

Pretty sure BELL helmets are not AUS standard. Not that any events check that hard but if they do, you won't be allowed to use it. AFAIK?
I know they don't make AUS legal bike helmets, again, no one checks.

comfort every track night > (more) disfigured face in unlikely event of accident
That said if I did targa or anything like that i'd probably rethink my choice

Do you need a fire estinguisher still or did they change that rule?
I bought a 1kg from Supercheap on special for $20 the other day.

Can anyone shed more light on this?
AL is cams affiliated AFAIK so i thought it would be ok?
As for a fire extinguisher Ive already got one in the car.

ALM is CAMS affiliated now, I used ALM on my licence.
You need to be a No Limits member to enter their events. ~$20 per year from memory.

Picked one up a few months ago for $320, so the discount price mentioned above is pretty damn good.
Decided on that model as im not keen on full face helmets, I HATE the feel of being constricted. Reasonably light weight, good field of view.
It's snell 2010. Passes at the drags (confirmed when I went down), and the people at Revolution Racegear say it's suitable for CAMS affiliated events (quoting them not directly CAMS standards). But not being Aus standards means it can't be legally used for on road use.

It will be fine for Wanneroo!
Proper car racing helmets are better then motorbike helmets for car racing! They are much lighter, so easier on the neck in a crash and the material is flame retardant

I've been running a full face RXT I got from Go Gear, that I have been meaning to upgrade, and after switching to that from an open face, vision difference is negligible. Only thing is talking to instructors and the like is a little harder, as everything is muffled.
Also, No Limits, Dec 12.... Do it!

Bell helmets are fine for events. Have seen them used at the track. Mate has one for formula racing
A little bit of a jib, but if you know what size you want, HRP world do them at a pretty decent price and have brought through them before if local suppliers have not got your colour or size in stock.

I have not had any issues when using it? its the real deal and was sold at a discount to make way for more stock, it was sitting in their backroom with about an inch of dust on it :P

i use an OMP helmet that is snug on face ... no issue, you get used to it / dont notice once you start driving ... although helps to have a shave a day or two prior to the event night

I dont like open face helmets so went with a Stilo ST3 as it has large opening, I wouldn't run an open face helmet as there is no chin protection.
Rallynuts are cheap and BSMSPORT have sales, I think my wifes Stilo was $600 on special from Barry Smith (BSMSPORT).

I think Sarah or Jai from no limits use to sell some that might be somewhere to start. They had magnetic ones from memory. I didn't have time to organise one last time so I used blue sparky tape and made one

rather than start a new thread i thought i'd bump this up. I'm also looking at getting into the odd track day, RAC and do a bit more karting etc.
I won't be using it on the road for motorbike use or anything. So from what I've gathered are Snell SA2010 standard helmets suitable? Someone said to me that the AS/NZ standard helmets dont always meet motorsport requirements but SA2010 helmets do, yet the SA2010 helmets just cant be used for on road use. Is SA2010 recognized at the drags/RAC event etc?
Can anyone confirm this? If it's true ill just get a SA2010 approved helmet as I tried one on which fit well and was $270 (Rjays Daytona-new car/kart helmet). It was alsoo a little more compact and lighter than some of the AS/NZ helmets.

Hi folks,
Thought I would bump this thread rather than starting another, as it seems to be a good resource for those getting started in track events.
I applied for a CAMS L2S licence on Friday, what is the usual turn-around for these (i.e. when should I expect a card back in the mail)?
And just regarding fire extinguisher's - are 1kg or 2kg required?
Cheers,
Turboesky

Mine took about 2 weeks but you can still enter events once you have paid. Just have to show your receipt and prove that you are in a cams affiliated club. You get a passport style book instead of a card.
I have only done rallysprints and you can have 1 x 2 kg or 2 x 1 kg. I went for 2 x 1 kg as I wanted 1 in front of each front seat.

CAMS turnaround : think mine was sub 1 week, did you apply online?
most non-speed events a single 1kg is fine, more competitive speed events are as above

Yep, online - thanks, good to know.
RE: extinguisher. Rallysprint regs mention a 2kg unit, but when I was there last week, I was speaking to one of the guys there with a rally spec vehicle, and noted he only had a 1kg - he mentioned that a 1kg was only required as it wasn't a speed event??? Confused the hell out of me, I thought it was a speed event.

Yeah I was seriously considering it, but went with No Limits membership as they run events more often and membership is only $15.

Rallysprint is run under Rally regulations, not speed event.
2kg total of fire extinguisher is required for rallysprint. As stated above either 2x 1kg, or a single 2kg.
Speed events such as no limits is only 1kg requirement.
I perform scrutineering at both.
