Try change "4. Technical Documents" to the "Heading 1" format again and see if that works?
Or right clicking on the 2.36 and go into the properties or whatever its called and see if you can change it to start at 4.1 or something (sorry I dont have word on this PC and haven't used it for years now so forgot all the menus..etc).
Right-click the number > Numbering > Set Numbering Value > Continue from previous list
You're welcome

-.- , wrong
go to print tab, print options, should be a check box tagged 'update fields before printing'
tick that, save, close, open again.
So did you fix it?
Serves you right for copy-pasting your thesis

probably too late, but yeah, will take forever to set it up propperly. You need each heading to be a heading style at the top. have to go through and do the whole thing I spose.
Seem to remember there was a seating to update all, but fucked if i remember how to do it. I suggest setting the main topic No#s correctly with the right heading style and then do one update and hope it fixes everything..
(save a copy and do it in that first... obviously)

And don't feel bad, my dad is also scared of computers, and he's only a little bit older than you.

Copypaste it into notepad, open a new word document, copypaste from notepad (since now it's just basic text) into the new word document, and then highlight and format the text as you need, then copy it back into the old word document.
Fuck yo heading templates, nigga.

Wow I just learnt how to do all of this last night for an assignment haha! Right click the numbers (In this case 2.36) and and delete them. Then Redo you subheadings with the number as part of the text instead of using the number object. You can manually put them in. For example atm you have [2.36] [Testing Procedure] what you want is it to be [4.1 Testing procedure]. Select the text and click references at the top and then click "Add text" and make sure "Level 2" is clicked.
This works the same with all headings with level 1 being the highest and then work your way down. Once you are done go back to your contents and click "Update field".

So did I.
No, seriously. Dry ice. Punched a hole straight through 4mm aluminium composite panel.
Fairly loud, too.
