Recently put down 400.1rwhp @ 1 bar. Since then a few more goodies have gone in. Awaiting install are JUN 272 camshafts, JUN springs, JUN retainers, a more heavily ported head, HKS head gasket and lastly, I'll be buying some larger injectors.
Then we'll bring the boost up and see what happens. :)
Then I'll begin work on my next motor which should be yet even more powerful. Plan is to use a T51R on a completely revised bottom end.
Best 1/4 mile time of 12.1 seconds.. 2.5 years ago.. with a lot less power. We'll see what happens this season as soon as the rain stops...

scariest MR2 in perth no doubt...
put those damn supra lights on tristan dont be lazy! :P

Thanks guys
No flared guards. The MR2 has a -lot- more wheel room at the rear than most people realise. 10" rims is definitely the max though! Ive got a little bit of breathing room with the 9.5"s
Brendan: Actually I saw another MR2 online with the supra tails done EXACTLY as I had planned to do it. And I really didnt like the finish product so the project has been binned for good

Haha. My friend works at the Auto Pro on the corner there.. so I always give him something to smile about when I drive past :P
That... and I like to annoy the other guy working in there who thinks his 13.5 second VH will kick my ass.. "Cause its way faster on the street"

Very, very nice indeed, a very clean but mean looking mr2
question: ive always wondered how hard it is to perform 'work' and maintainence on a mid-engined car such as the SW20 Mr2, easier than i think?
does this car experience more oversteer than understeer or opposite, in dry and wet conditions?
cheers

Love this car! It's just really nicely modified. You don't see a million mr2's going around that are this quick either.
Still makes a beasty sound from what I heard on the last A12 cruise :D

Mr2s are known for awsome handling in dry, the car is very well balanced n rear loves to stick. But if you want to or push it over the limit (or have 400rwhp... lol) Mr2s do oversteer :)
In wet however they are quiet easy to oversteer! An unexpieranced driver apprerently really shudn't push an Mr2 as they are awsome if u know what your doing but abit unforgiving if you dont.
Sure Tristan will expand on this comment!

Thanks Jayden!
Maintenance on the MR2 is tricky for some. In short... if you're familiar with them then they become quite simple to work on.. and in many ways, easier than a FR car. But you need to think about it very differently... stuff comes off in ways that dont initially occur to you. So someone inexperienced can end up tearing their hair out in frustration.
A good example is the celica GT four actually. Same motor, same layout.. but in the front. And the MR2 is waaaaaay nicer and easier to work on. Everything is so much more accessible. Who would have thought? Just need to know how to do it.
There are however a couple of things which are very annoying to do on the MR2. 1) remove fuel tank... 10 times more tricky than most other cars. 2) remove intercooler.. this requires so much crap to be taken off. 3) remove gearbox. GRR!! :D 4) changing heater pipes..
That crap aside... removing the turbo system, the head, changing timing belt, removing the radiator.. all far easier than the celica (and most other cars). Its just different.
Onto handling.. jazza got it pretty right.. but I will expand! The MR2 is both a chronic oversteerer AND understeerer if driven wrongly. Sometimes, finding the right balance is like trying to balance a pen on its tip.... very delicate.. but if you achieve it, it will kick ass through almost anything. They can actually handle extremely slow in the wrong hands.
There are rules.. and at first, many of them seem to contradict each other.. but once you've driven one in spirit, it makes more sense..
1) Dont power through tight corners, you will understeer
2) DO power through sweeping bends, the tail end squats and grips superbly
3) DO NOT lift off the throttle during #2, or your ass end will end up off the road
4) Do not stay on the throttle if the tail end steps out. You can rarely bring it back straight simply by correcting the steering.
The key to driving it is to approach tight corners fast.. and this takes some big balls. Then allow the car to glide through the corner.. you will go blindingly fast with no understeer, but the tail will step out if you're going too fast. If you touch the brakes, you're in trouble. Thats why they're scarey.. once you enter the corner, you're a passenger.
If you approach too slow, dont bother trying to put the throttle down.. the tail squats, the front lifts and you plow forward in understeer. So entry speed is critical
If the corner is a long sweeper, understeer is no factor, approach it even faster.. and stick your boot into it. To an extent, the more throttle you give it.. the more tail end grip you will have. And if you're a legendary expert, you can use a powerslide to get the tail end out about 5-10 degrees and whip around bends in some kind of super-drift which is mind bogglingly fast. Ive perfected this on 1 or 2 corners in perth... and I will not attempt it anywhere else as its just too dangerous.
So you can see why its so unforgiving. The only way to go fast is to drive it in such a way... that if you get anything wrong, you end up in a tree.
Finally, if its wet, just dont drive ;) Its hard enough not screwing it up in the dry!! To put it simply, every tail-end difficulty of the car's handling is multiplied by 5. You can be driving very carefully.. and then all of a sudden.. it feels like godzilla just latched onto the back of your car and begun swinging around. Tail goes everywhere! Oversteer is definitely the biggest problem in the wet. And you dont need to have the throttle down for it to happen

hehe ta. Most people say it sounds more like a motorbike when Im wringing it out..
I was rev limited to 8000rpm on that cruise btw, not 8500
I plan to take my next bottom end 1000rpm higher... to 9500. Now that will sound most cool.

Thanks man :) I ran another 12.1 on normal road tyres last night. Annoyingly my last run was a full 0.1 faster on the launch and was easily on track for an 11.9.. and then my clutch slipped :|.
Still on 14psi.
Anyway.. I'll have results to brag about in a couple of weeks. *frustrated*

I hope the realism is better than in GT3. The handing of the MR2 in that was a bit.. not correct. Better than in any other game though!

I test those people sometimes. I accellerate SLOWLY.. in 1st gear... do about 5000rpm in 1st at 50km/h... and see how many of them wave at me like a retard to slow down.

bought a JDM SW20 myself recently, despite it being off the road temporarily, im alot happier than i thought i would be with the power output that basic mods produce, theres plenty more work to be done but in the meantime im just going to keep track of your weapon's progress for inspiration :D
btw, i recently snapped my 3rd + 4th clutch cable, WTF auto has been highly spoken of so i plan to bring in the MR2 when i recover from the debt blow that purchase hurt me with lol.

slicks. But they were so cold that my street tyres out launched them by 0.1 seconds hehe..
Car at 100%? is that a joke? Its at about 60%
Still not tuned properly, still at low boost, still with a lowered rev limit and still yet to fit my new head/cams
only 16psi on that pass man. I was running 22psi back during the days of Import Scene.. this motor is still being 'babied' in comparison.
I want to see a mid 10 second pass out of this motor.. with the boost wound up. Then get my T51R SPL / GT30R sequential combination (like on MESMERIZE)... maybe build a better bottom end... and go for 9s. But that wont be possible this season as I'll need to dish out a fair few dollars strengthening the driveline. My twin plate clutch is just about to spit the dummy at this power level.. and my axles wont hold. And my gearbox/diff needs some attention

Yeah Im going to twin it at this point. Your memory serves you right about MES.. and it has been on the road for a year or so now.
It doesnt matter how silly my car gets to drive. I just quit my job to take a job which is 3 times closer to home.. so I no longer have to drive as far and dont have to endure any freeway traffic! yay!

is that ready to crack the 10s or still more power left to come?
flupstar
23-10-2005, 05:19 PM
Given a perfect run with perfect conditions and a prepped track, I think it has the potential to do a 10.9.. The previous tune could have managed maybe 11.3 on drag radials... so you'd think that 70hp and more importantly about 130nm torque should come very close to knocking 0.4 seconds off. The power curve is to die for now.
We'll see for sure on Wednesday. Unfortunately the track wont be prepped but it'll give me an idea.
And I still havnt put those JUN cams/ported head/oversize valves in yet! And as far as we can tell, the pretty much unported head I have in there now with stock valves is severely holding it back.
Im determined to hit 10s on pump fuel either way. Then I want 9s on race fuel ;) But thats silly talk.. that wont happen at least until next summer.

This is a good season!
And yet again I reset my PB on a terrible run.
Launch was useless with a 1.8 second 60'
And then the engine developed a misfire halfway through third and I was forced to shift into 4th very early which basically coasted me across the line.. hence an almost identical terminal speed to my 11.7 run..
These engine troubles pretty much put me out of action for the rest of the night so I had no opportunity to try for the 10.9 I was hoping for
Once Ive resolved the problems, I may go down again but that might be some time away now. Ive accomplished a 0.8 second improvement this season (which has only just begun). Thats enough for the moment!

Thats enough for the moment!
dude thats insane, getting 11.3 with that 60 footer time and the fact that you were not driving it hard all the way...dang.
congrats...10s arent far away now bro..

Almost there Tristan! Best of luck!!!
Thankyou! Im secretly trying to beat your rex too... Ive considered that worthy competition for a long time now.
Are you ever planning on taking it down and nailing a good pass to show what its true potential is? We all know it has the balls to make 11.2 look slow... and I think it has the driveline to do it too?
