Hey Guys,

All the talk on antilag of bikes and the nice weather is making me want to buy a supersport again ! , after years of riding a zx12r and R1 i went to the dark side and brought a harley  , Dont get me wrong i love my harley and will not part with it, great for crusing/looks but not good for anything else, So im a bit out of touch with what sports bikes are good these days Lets face it anything is going to feel quick compared to my bike at the moment, my criteria is something 2006+, 600cc + And all the usual manufacturers, Lets me know your good and bad points of the bikes you have ridden, cheers :D

I am a little biased right now. I have mainly ridden sports bikes on the road but was getting over all the wankers hiding in the bush trying to ruin my Sunday morning blasts so considered going down the Harley route for more sedate cruising, but didn't quite follow through. Am also fairly tall and have just hit the wrong side of 40, so was getting a bit tired of the sportsbike riding position for road duties. Ended up getting a Ducati Streetfighter S. Am really enjoying it. The more upright riding position is a little more comfortable than my 998s, you catch a bit more wind so seem to cruise the country roads slightly slower as opposed to the 150 plus on the sports bike that made it comfortable. It is untouchable in the twisties, will still hold its own at a trackday if thats your thing, and carries the gearsack on the back well and is great for touring. Had a week round tassie on it with a group of mates and it was decided it was the weapon of choice. Also find I am more likely to pull it out of the shed for a quick cruise in town for a cheeky frothie. It hasn't really helped my problem of wankers hiding in the bush ruining my ride, but has renewed my enthusiasm. :)

I reckon any of the current crop of nakeds in your preferred flavour would be worth a look.

Can confirm Blaise is as fast on the streetfighter as he was on the 998 in the hills. IE he still loses me by the first corner.... :(

I LOVE my 1198, ride it daily to/from work, thankfully i don't have to contend with much stop/start traffic which does suck a bit on the ducati. It runs HOTTT, and hates slow speeds, but puts a smile on my face every single time i ride it... :D

Came from a Trumpy 675 Daytona, that was a great bike in traffic and a heap of fun in the hills..

848 / 675R / GSXR750

Having owned an 848 for a while, it's fast enough to keep me content, if I had bought a 600CC bike I would have probably traded up already but the 'super-mids' seem to be the right spot. I imagine any 1 litre bike would be a bit much to handle.

have a look at the b-king, hayabusa and zx14
vfr1200 is also a pretty cool bike to ride

why limit yourself to 1000cc if you are after an all rounder

very easy bikes to ride due to the torque

I (almost) daily ride my 2009 R1 with no problems. I'm not sure why people seem to think they are a handful?

If you don't have a problem controlling your right wrist it's no dramas. Can pick one up for around 11k? Might be able to get a screamer 08 for sub 10 though?

Hey mate i think people just enjoy the nimbleness of the 600-750 bikes maybe ? , also what do you mean by 08 screamer? do they have a different donk in ?

coming from a 98 R1, 05 R1, 06 ZX6R and currently an 06 GSXR600 and having owned most jap manufacturers here are my impressions:

Honda. always well built. really not much to fault. 600's are a little bit 'boring' to ride in terms of power delivery. I use boring in a broad sense as its still ruddy fast compared to four wheels!:) Hondas have boring as dash clusters though...

Yamaha. Same as honda. always good build quality. R1's reputation speak for themselves. Look shit hot and go like stink. The R6's on the other hand look awesome but for commuting it wouldnt be my first choice unless you have wrists and an ass of steel. 20 minutes on the thing and I was ready to give it up.

Kawasaki. For some reason have shit resale value? took me ages to sell mine. I've only had a zx6r and it was an 06 model but man...that was def my favourite bike. Handling from a stock bike was awesome. Steering was light and precise. Just point your eyes in one direction and the bike was already turning there. Build quality was ok. Newer models are starting to look better. They went fugly for a while...but thats all personal opinion.

Suzuki. I think these have the worst build quality out of all of the jap 4's. They newer models may have gotten better. But everything feels quite cheap and plasticky. Have often read on forums about welds breaking..although this was from heavy abuse landing hard on wheelies and hard crashes.
But even still....ripped rims off the spokes, and cracked welding from frames on numerous occasions doesn't inspire confidence.
The ride is ok. suzuki's you tend to sit 'in' the bike as opposed to 'on' it (like the R6). Ride position is pretty comfy for a supersports....and because of the position feels good (for me atleast) to hang off the bike.

That's being picky....i mean really, they've all got their own pros and cons and unless you don't buy a chinese branded heap of shit (or a harley. haha) you really aren't gonna go too wrong if you pick up a clean example. Comes down to what makes your balls tingle in the end.

09+ got the crossplane crank engine upgrade. Very different than the 07/08's, more torque/low end grunt.

I reckon within budget, a Triumph Speed Triple wouldn't be a bad thing.. I guess the trick is, get your short list and then ride em all and see which one turns your crank.

also they have shocking handling compare to the other litre bikes, low speed it is a pig, and unless your pushing it hard it's just shocking at low speed

Also im nearly 6 foot 2 and 100kg , im thinking that im going to be a bit uncomfortable on a smaller 600 over the 1000, 600cc might not like hauling my fat ass ! ??

around that price, i've ridden everything jap in the k7 range - honda/suzuki/yamaha/kawasaki.

suzuki hands down best bit of kit (and best looking) out of all those. my pick would be a k7.k8 750 - if you can find one.

other then that, good bargains to be had on 07/08 r1's - could probably squeeze one in for 10k, like anything, you get used the power, i did 20,000 kays on my 09 cbr1000rr, had less moments with that then i did on the 600 - purely because i wasnt as large of a dickhead on it.

g.l!

IMO if you want a true "all rounder" this would be the way I'd go.

Best option is to go and throw a leg over a few. Most dealers will let you take one for a decent ride (30mins +) which would be the minimum to be able to get the feel for it.

1000's, 12/1300's etc are not a handfull if your not a potato. Just like a 600hp GTR is not a handfull if your not a potato. Its just about common sense really.

I am totally biased but I love my Speed Triple. Handles well, so much torque everywhere and easy to ride in upright position. Ride it to work a couple times a week and its easy to navigate through traffic etc etc. I'd give one a test ride mate!

Ok so its came down to this shortlist ! have access to them all today and will be buying one today :) pick from this list there all in immaculate condition stock with exception of pipes

2008 R1
2006 GSXR1000

They are pretty much all the same bikes besides from the things you can tell your mates about, i.e. "This ones a 750 which is the best all round bike for power and handling". This ones the R1, has big bang which means it will get power to the ground better". "This ones a jap inline 4, makes bucket loads of power and can easy go over 320kph". Just pick the one you like the look and sound of the most as unless your sir name is Doohan or Dunlop, all the differences are just talking points.

R1 would be my pick of the 3, they do have a less comfortable seating position though.

Biggest factor is what type of riding and where you want to go. If it's for the occasional commute to work or riding about metro area a 600 will be fun and light but having the engine constantly screaming and goin up and down the gears constantly will get annoying soon.
A litre bike is alot more lazy to ride, unless I am on a mission to get somewhere I will just ride one handed using the first 3 gears only. Usually just rolling on and off the throttle in 3rd is enough to keep up and ahead of traffic.

Only you can decide what bike is right for you, as Steve said it's unlikely your gonna find the limits of any of the bikes you posted so goin for one with quickest handling or most HP isn't gonna mean fuck all. Ride them all, in as many different road conditions as you can freeway, suburbs, round abouts etc then pick the most comfy one not only seating position but feel when riding.

Another thing to consider is the heat the R1's put out. Riding around in summer with underseat exhausts and high engine temps is not my idea of fun.

Gixxer would be my pick (biased view, have a K9thou) low engine temps and pretty linear power delivery.

For general commuting the GSXR's will be much more comfortable to ride.

Agree also with the comments in regards to underseat exhausts. If you do a lot of slow/heavy traffic riding in summer, it's a consideration for sure...

09 R1 was really bad for the heat... it hated going slow and would get hot very fast. Ass/balls area was the worst part. without my a-star boots my ankle would get toasty too.
