How much GPM is too much for a LS1?

There is 35/40/55

Not an LS1 expert by any means, but I stumbled across this (http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=27) article whilst researching shit to do with mine.

That Meziere pump, specifically for an LS1, is 55GPM: http://www.meziere.com/ps-1144-0-WP319S.aspx

55 is what I found when I was searching for equivalent electric external pump.

Cool the 35/40 must be for real tight arses then, i'll get the 55

Also... i went electric to avoid having a gay belt setup since there is a lack of aircon/power steer etc

Besides the obvious less pulleys to turn, is there any advantages of electric over mechanical?

Having the ability to control the flow independently from the engine speed would mean better temperature control.

eg. You could have it running at full flow even with the engine at low RPM (good for after burnouts, eh?)

Water pump can continue running after engine off, which means engine is less likely to get hot spots and the like which can cause warping etc.

Run the biggest flowing you can, but keep in mind power requirements and whether you alternator can keep up or needs upgrading.

Yeah thats the next worry, only have a stock ls1 alternator and it has twin thermos, thermo on tranny cooler, 044, lift pump etc. Time to research alternator upgrade

6.0/6.2 ltr alternator?
Or something from like a 'chev' truck or other similar LS powered large Vehicle?

Just spitballin' here...

I'm running twin 044s and an electric water pump. Don't have any problems with my alternator charging. That said I also have an orbital yellow top battery.

i got a yellow optima D34, reckon that will do the job?

Dan - buy a deep cycle 12 machinery battery

I run some mofo's in cleaning machinery - you will be amazed at what is out ther if you "look outside the square"- some will crank an ls1 all day with no altenator at all.
Feel free to call me and I will help where I can - 0419 542911 - or delronbsn@westnet.com.au

Buying a bigger battery is a false economy.
The pump will be running all the time, therefore drawing power all the time, the alternator only puts out xy amps, if your taking out xy+20amps then you'll run out of juice and probably start to kill the battery.
Also cranking off a deep cycle will kill it quicker, essentially reducing the amount of 'cycles' you get out of it.

It's kind of like upgrading your fuel injectors to 2000cc, but then leaving an undersized OEM fuel pump in place.
It'll work most of the time, but eventually you'll get into trouble.
