try sticking it in the bag of rice for a day or so, pain in the ass not being able to take the battery out though. Might just dry out and work, but a washing machine is a decent amount of time, my guess is its fucked

Thanks for the tips

Hey Sammish - do I need to take my receipt ?
The closest Apple store is in Perth - I will be going to Perth on the 12th Sept, so could take it in then
Do they swap on the spot, or send it away?

Make a booking to see the genius bar about your iphone, if you go around lunch when its epic busy (even better if you can do it on a friday), they're more likely to replace it for free than charge you the $179/249 fee (depending if in/out of warranty). I've had ~15 replaced for free for work despite not having any corporate accounts.

If they can see visible signs of water damage they won't replace it for free.

The genius... sorry, sales rep.... who checked my phone looked at the connectors at the bottom, spotted a little bit of dirt, and then charged me $179 to replace it as it was 'water damaged'.

It had never gone in water, and to my knowledge never been wet. The on/off button stopped working, which is why I wanted it replaced.

They are supposed to replace ti for free if its not physical damage... most of the time they will find damage.. Hence $179...

Like a few others mentioned, the first thing they check the water indicator (located in the dock connector) for moisture, Its meant to change colour. I'm not sure what they do then...

There's a moisture sensor inside the headphone port anyway isn't there?

Edit: Too slow ^

Im more than happy to fork out $200 over $700 for a new one

Will still try to get it as cheap as I can though

Living down in Busselton, I have limited opportunnities to get to an Apple shop - there arent any down south at all

All moisture sensors are still clear - no colour at charge port or ear phone port - supposed to turn red if water damaged

NFI why they didnt change after 30 mins getting the shit washed out of it!!

WTF can the pingpingpingpings make a water proof phone pingpingpingpings

As mentioned they usually check the phone's indicators for water damage - so chances are they'll know if you're lying

Iphones have around 5 moisture indicators, 2 visible without needing to open the handset up. As far as water and physical damage go, Apple will replace your device for a set price if its found to be non warranty. Its very easy to tell when a phone has been liquid ingressed if you are aware and know what your looking for, weather its been through humidity or direct contact with water there are many tell tale signs.

As far as release of the Iphone 5 goes, it will be soonish as iphone 5 accessories are available from my suppliers already meaning its around the corner, but as far as i know there is no official release date.

on the topic ofwater and phones,

i happened to be watching daytime tv a few weekends ago, "the doctors" show was on, they were talking about the exact issue of dropping your phone in the water.

in the piece they brought up this product http://www.liquipel.com.au/ it is meant to waterproof what ever you treat it with. they showed an example of an iphone in the toilet completely submerged, they rang the phone and it still worked under water, they got the phone out and continued to used it with no issues.
another example they showed was a tissue that they had treated with the liquipel product, they poured water over the tissue and it just ran off not one drop absorbed into the tissue.

i havent looked any further into it personally but from their review on the show it seems like it is the solution to accidental water damage on your phone

Liquapel is a joke and and isnt backed by any manufacturers although the Australian supplier VitaGroup will have you believe different. If you read the fine print it clearly states it has no guarentee and if your phone is returned 'water damaged' after a warranty inspection the verdict is... to fucking bad, but thanks for the $100.

Dont use it. Ive seen it demo'd first hand and the phone shat itself as soon as it touched water. Theres bulk indapendant testing on the product and all come back the same, the hardware fails to work properly after coming in contact with water. THe more time passes the worse it becomes, dont buy it... I WARN YOU !
