I have a 96 Toyota Soarer TT with 120,000 k's.
Reason I ask is I went down to Auto pro this afternoon and asked the staff there who said 10W, However I called a friend and he told me to use 20W also from my past experiences with Jap cars I have always used 20W.

So now I'm a bit confused.

Use synthetic.

Read http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/.

Use search.

I'd suggest any fully synthetic 10W-40W to 5W/50W to avoid brand arguments.

5W-50 Mobil 1 Synthetic is what I use.

If I were to use thicker oil etc 20w-50 would it do any damage?

Do you need to go 50 weight for any reason?
Is the motor worn?

50 weight wont do any damage, but the higher weight oils are normally recommened for worn engines

Anyone using the pentrite 10w 70 ? Supposedly good for turbocharged motors with high operating temps..

If the engine is worn then go for something that has a low working temp like 0-10, then a weight of around 40-50.
I use Castrol Magnatec in most my cars and used to in most my clients cars, never ever had an issue.

My bad that was abit of a high jack.. I meant in 'good' motors.. Ie fresh, upgraded turbo....

I run 10W-50 HPR10 Penrite oil in the Supra (meant to be equivalent 10W-40 but for the Australian market, due to heat? IIRC anyway - can't remember the point made).

Not sure what oils you are meant to use though when you upgrade car components. :-/

if the car isnt seeing high temps, ie not tracking it, then extra virgin olive oil.
but if you are going to drive it hard or track it, you need something along the lines of peanut oil with the higher boiling/burning point

Cheers Everyone.
looks like 10w-40 is the goer.

10W40 royal purple. anything higher like 20w50 will just give you shit lubrication at cold start and will be too thick to do its job at operating temp, especially if you are over fueling. If you change it every 5000 kms it doesn't really matter what brand you get, so long as it is the correct viscosity and changed often with good filters. Royal purple is the tits though. Penrite 10w50 can be good in the summer with the high temps here
