got a slow leak of coolant coming from it

possibly a heater tap? does it open and shut as you change the temp inside the car from hot to cold?

ps, just a complete guess, no idea really

Could be, used the heater for the first time ever this morning (car has had its whole life up north so never needed it)

Heater tap, no surprise that it leaked. Do the radiator cap while you there.

Check the plastic quick connectors on the heater hoses as well they also prone to leaking.
