So ive been thinking of buying a fj40 for a while now just because i love the look of them.

Ill be looking at a Chev conversion or buying one already converted. What needs to be done to them to be a good 4x4???

Will mainly be used for beach runs and dunes. Is bigger better when it comes to this?? i.e. big tyres and lift kit??

This will be my first 4wd!

They are OLD

Be prepared to sink coin into it if you want a nice example!

setup right they are an awesome 4by. a chev will make it way better. in regards to lift and tyres. you want to keep you're centre of gravity down, 2'' lifted springs and extended shackles should see you able to fit 35s on it, get lockers front and rear, some good recovery points, and you should be on you're way nicely and be able to tackle alot of places with ease.

Ive also always liked them. Would you consider a newish Jeep Wrangler? Similar looking with a few nice mod cons.

Makes me want to sell the Hilux and buy one of these!!

Has some links in it to RHS/SHS sections being used to rebuild body and etc. in the US - very interesting!

love the old 40s, guy up here as an awesome orange one (not for sale unfortunately) pretty sure it's still the petrol six but has a big lift and 35s etc on it, looks so good.

Also consider the FJ73/FJ70/BJ70/BJ73/BJ74 which are SWB and MWB and far more refined than the 40s

Or, you could just buy a 60 series which is the best 4x4 in the world!
