Guys,

Unsure if anyone else is having issues similar to mine but my internet speeds have turned to absolute shit over the past 3 days.

On the 7th/8th of this month i was running speedtest.net checks and getting between 10-15mbs a second regardless of the time of day, now i am lucky to get 3.5mbs.

Tonight i tried the ozspeedtest website which has a bigpond 9mb mirror server, these are the results.

Test run on [*11/04/2012*] @ [*09:13 PM*])]

[(Mirror: [*Telstra Bigpond*]
Data: [*9 MB*]
Test Time: [*64.69 secs*])]

[(Your line speed is [*1.17 Mbps*] (1168 kbps).
Your download speed is [*146 KB/s*] (0.14 MB/s). )]

I have tried running no filter, new telephone line, rebooting the modem, adjusting the setting on my bigpond account from interleaved to FAST which has done 3/5 of f**k all to help things.

As the crow flies i am approximately 200m from the telephone exchange, and in the past have had no issue with getting 2MB+ download speeds

I only noticed the massive slow down whilst playing Battlefield (On perth servers mind you), i have gone from a 20-40ping to around 200-350 which makes it totally unplayable.

Does anyone have any further suggestions on what i could try? Telstras call centre is useless as they put you through to someone in another country who told me "im running some checks on your line as we speak" but couldnt offer any tech support because i wasnt at home to "reboot the modem"

I know you've checked for line noise, so I won't include it in my list.

- Disable Wireless
- Isolate network to single computer
- Try alternate computer isolated
- Check sync rates in modem
- With no filter, you also had all phones in the house unplugged, right?
- Try alternate modem

Wierd. Sounds like a tech has fucked something up at the exchange, or someone has damaged a landline

Cheers Tom,

Ive tried disabling the wireless, running a cat5 cable straight into a laptop and running the test, get same result from speedtest.

The modem is the Thompson TG782T that telstra supplied, any idea how i can check / adjust sync rate ?

I dont have a spare modem, and not keen to spend $90 to find thats not the issue haha

Tom

Sync rate isn't something you adjust, it'll be in the line stats section of the modem.

How old is the modem? I have a spare one you can borrow. I'll try get to C&C on Saturday and bring it if you want?

Wierd. Sounds like a tech has fucked something up at the exchange, or someone has damaged a landline

They are currently building houses behind us, so the damaged line could be ringing true... but Telstra will charge $105 for the line check to be done if there isnt any fault to be found.

This brings me to my next point, does anyone on AL / know of anyone who could perform a line check for me ? More than willing to pay for time / beer etc.

those are good sync rates
might be a newer firmware to flash for the modem?

i'd normally try a different modem just to rule it out and then have a whinge to them about the line

Milhouse

Will try update it now :)

***edit***

Software Release: 8.6.P.3

Currently using the latest firmware, according to other's telstra automatically push new firmware out to customers.

Typical the modem is very basic, you need to unlock it using PUTTY to be able to change any of the major settings.

Telstra are having issues with their lines the last few days. At work we've had a lot of clients lose communications with us through the IP connect alarm systems which use Telstra ADSL lines. Yesterday all IP connect customers experienced a drop out at around 3am.

Do you have an alarm system installed in your house ?
They usualy hook into the phone line in the roof, this way the alarm can phone a security company.
It was suggested to me, when I had connection issues, to climb into the roof and take a look at the connection.
Bare wires everywhere, disconected the alarm, insulated the wires and all fixed.

Yep we do have an alarm, which at first was causing us to have no dial tone whatsoever.

Technician came out, re-wired everything and hadnt had a problem since.

I'll see how i go for speedtest / BF3 this evening.

Thanks for your help guys.

Have you got a central filter installed in your roof for the monitored alarm?

Just got home, fired up speed test.

0.39mb download, 0.39 upload. 78ms Ping.

DA FUQ!

Congestion at the exchange might explain it ? friendly with any neighbours who you can get to test their speeds at the same time yours is shit ?

Notice how your shit ping times are during "peak" periods..... overloaded exchange IMHO.

Does anyone have any hookups for a decent technical support person at Bigpond? I.E someone with a brain

I am still syncing at 1.1mb/0.82mb and it is piss poor slow and the phone people are telling me everything is fine when clearly it is not

I did get one decent one on the phone last week (was connecting at 2.8mb/1.1mb) who said he put my line in "safe mode" to monitor line disconnects which dropped it to the 1.1

This latest one is telling me 1.1mb sync and 120kbps~ downloads is acceptable in their ADSL2+ agreement

Your telephone line is shit. Deal with it.

Ps. what does your modem say the line attenuation (measured in dB) is?

DanWA
30-04-2012, 11:07 AM
Yeah i'm getting a tech out to check the line (before the telstra one comes) as Telstra will charge massive if its on my end yeah?

I did just finally get an aussie phone support person via escalation and he had me unplug everything and could still see something connected on my homeline, organised a tech visit for 2nd of May. If only you could get onto nice people like that bloke straight away and not the dumb as hell people on the normal number.

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 46.0 / 59.0

_S9_

59db is massive. Estimated speed would be 1-2mb tops (in the real world)

Your copper is borked basically.

DanWA
30-04-2012, 11:16 AM
Cheers, we'll see how the techs go on fixing the copper

Dan, my internet has come good over the past week. Getting 15mb/s and pings on WA game servers around the 18-70ms mark.

Havent a clue what the deal was, could have been due to school holidays, but i did notice guys laying the fibre for NBN outside the house last week.

Fingers crossed i can get cable soon !

Well seems to be somewhat closer to normal, definately not the same but its peak time of the day i guess.

Electrician found no issue at my place.

Telstra guy was only here 2 minutes to double check as he found a fault up the road.

31ms isnt massive latency.

No idea Marc, seems to be a dedicated thread to it on Whirlpool, even IInet reps are saying there is an issue they are trying to fix. Streaming is fucking useless, 10 minutes to load a normal song on Youtube n shit, had to resort to Porn file on PC as made redtube a waste :P

My end

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 10 dB 10 dB
Attenuation 27 dB 42 dB
