View Full Version : Pet toys - what is dog proof?

House sitting a mates place at the moment with two dogs - one is a Poodle X Newfoundland, other is a small staffy X something (pug maybe).

They love their soft stuffed squeaky toys, but over the past week I have come home to find stuffing all over the yard and the dogs chewing on the plastic squeakers.

So I went to buy some cheap squeaky soft balls today. Those only lasted minutes....they will gently chew and make them squeak for a while, then they just rip them apart to get to the squeaker.

Not having had dogs in the past I'm not sure what to do, can I make such a toy unbreakable? Or any other ideas?.....I did browse through BigW today for one of those rubber things that you hide food/treats in, but didn't have much success.

Empty 2L coke bottles, works mad with little dogs, hours of entertainment as they try and capture them. Just take the lids off first.

File the teeth down so they are blunt.

Yeah...just been told that freezing dog food/meat in the Knog things works well and lasts longer.

Ricey - tempting given I almost got bitten.

Ex's dog worked out 2l coke bottles with biscuits inside eventually, she unscrewed the lids and held them upside down to get the biscuits out, fucking thick as shit in every other way, Reminded me of Gir from Zim, but could work that shit out like a fucking rocket surgeon!

Nothing's really dog proof, my friends pit bull chews rocks and bricks and his teeth are rooted so we got him one of those "indestructible" Kevlar chew toys, lasted a day...

You can get really firm compound foam balls (almost like rubber) from a few places, they look like cricket balls. This is the only ball my dog hasn't been able to destroy in a few days, took him several months to finally rip one to pieces. Pity they are smaller dogs because the other thing I find mine enjoys (border collie blue cattle cross) are indoor soccer balls half-inflated - still rips the green fluffy shit off them but I had one that lasted well over a year of abuse.

anything with staffy in the mix will destroy dog toys. I knew a bloke who's staffy was particularly fond of chewing golf balls, could shred one in less then an hour.

The dog bones for very strong chewers doesnt even last 30mins in my house. squeeky toys last less than 5mins, tennis balls gone within 2-3mins. I buy my dog the foam balls for when we go down to dog park, usually last 2-3months. The king kong treat things work ok, but yeh like others said, coke bottle works a treat

Kongs are really tough plastic but if the dog wants to chew it up, it's gonna be chewed up!

Try getting some toys that don't have the squeaker if you're worried they're going to choke. The squeaking could also be a reason for the unstoppable chewing - the mentality of the dogs being they're 'killing it til it's dead'.

Head to Better Pets/City Farmers and find the toughest chunks of dried meats/bones you can. Will keep them busy for a while, little to choke on, will clean their teeth and they get a better feed than bits of plastic.

Chicken necks are really good too! My dog gets a good chew out of them, especially if they to have been frozen. A little cheaper than Wings as well.

Motorbike / scooter / mountain bike tyres depending on the size of the dog.

Few games of tug of war and they are set.

Usually free from the shops too.

Our german shepard had traffic cones for toys, also loved tennins balls that last seconds. The only ball we found that was dog proof and bouncy enough was the rubber one found in fire hydrants ( like a ball valve).

The bike tire idea, and Coke bottle ones are brilliant! On the issue but, would you just hand em to the dog with a bit of encouragement, or maybe leave it in a tub of water with beef stock or similar for a day? Heard rubber tyres taste SHITHOUSE!
Just have to trick them into the Taste for a bit and the chewing continues after taste dies....??

Whatever you do, dont give them a milo tin to play with, fuck they are loud. Dog always decided 3am was a good time to start nuzzling it up and down the driveway. that idea was finished the next night haha.

I had the same problem with my boy staffy!
The bottle with treats inside trick works well, but if your after something bulletproof then have a go at the medium size ball on the page below.

They are Aussie made and my dog goes ape shit for it!! I bought it about 3 years ago and it's still going!
Also I found this yellow rubber bone toy at better pets and gardens which I bought him about 2 years ago and it's still in good nik. He chews it for hours and he can't kill it!

How the fuck do you have a poodle newfoundland cross?
Surely that would be near impossible

Probably a standard poodle, only miniature poodles are those little ones chicks have, regular poodles are quite large, quite an angry fucker of they want to be too.

+2 for kong. Our dobermans have destroyed everything but. You can get kongs with a hole in them, Put a bit of peanut butter inside, they will enjoy licking it out and then playing with it. <-- that sounds very wrong reading it back ......

All your dogs are clinically insane. Chewing rocks, bricks, eating tyres and ripping shit to shreds? Put the fuckers down.

This. Or, fill it up with treats(raw sausage/meat etc/peanut butter + a bit of water for a fairly fluid like paste mix, then freeze for an ultra marathon style chewy fun session for the dog

+3 for Kongs, I have a husky and they love to chew! Most of the Kong products are durable, but nothing is husky proof!

I think there is a kong that is supposedly indestructable. They are the black ones and if the dog can destroy it take it back and they will give you another one.

Our mutt loves old containers that he can roll around the yard. Goes apeshit for old ice cream containers.

Cheers for the suggestions.

Kong with peanut paste and dog food frozen in it worked a treat, as did the coke bottle with food in it (had to punch a small hole in it so they could smell it).

Came home to find the yard clean and them not chewing on the mulch :)

Also repaired the squeaky soft ball by wrapping some old footy socks over and over again. Has lasted 2 hours now :)

depending on size of the dog - carrots can be a cheap and easy distraction. Worked well for our border collie as a pup - would crunch/grind on one for at least an hour, keep her quiet.

Makes for interesting looking poos.

no shit lol walk your dog!!

in saying that though some dogs just want to watch the world burn.

we had a beagle, was the biggest pingpingpingping you will ever meet, wouldnt play with toys but would chew its way into the house during the day through the fly screen and just demolish anything it could find, shoes, hats, even clothes etc off the line.

Walk them
Give them a ball for half hour to an hour each day
Give them lots of attention when home

If you leave the toys out for them constantly, they will become bored of them & destroy them. They need their brain stimulated & thus tired out... Walking them & giving them simple repetitive commands does this :)

This. I have a rotty/healer and a staffy/labrador. They both have a kong each and those things are fucking indestructable. rotty had one for 5 years before he managed to destroy it, and that was because it was constantly left in the sun going from moist (mmmm moist) to dry and eventually got a crack in it which he exploited. Apart from that, dogfood mince in it with peanut butter or something similar in the hold on the end and they'll go nuts for fucking ages trying to get all the food out. Stuff em with something else and chuck em in the freezer in summer to give them a frozen treat. Best value for money dog-toy around. Rotty chewed through a kevlar toy in the space of 2 days.

+1 swap the toys out every week or so. Stops them getting bored with the toys they have.
