I am slowly becoming more and more pissed off with this 'pop' from my PC's speakers every time a light is turned on, or the mrs is using the sewing machine, etc...

I read this on a random forum:

Actually, you're ALL wrong.

The EM or M field generated by the washing machine was not causing interference.

Shielding won't fix it, only re-wiring your house will.

When the washing machine is going, its motor is actualyl generating a back EMF, or current, that screws around with the current on that circuit. Unless you have your speakers on a different circuit, you will continue to have it happen.

The lights is just damned weird, I know some idiot electricians put them on the same circuit as the wall plugs - this is the same in my house, but it is 30-40 years old. We recently have had it rewired due to massive extensions, and our awsome electrician listened to me about the circuits and he's done a great job, no feedback to my other devices as the laundry now has its own isolated circuit.

I'm worried now that less-than-ideal household wiring may be causing randomness elsewhere - like to my $2k odd of gaming PC that's on the same powerboard... am I worried about nothing or is this a problem?

Cheers,
Sam

Try running the speakers off a different power circuit if possible and see if it's just the one circuit or the whole house that needs looking at. Quite possible you are running one of the house circuits close to it's capacity. After a quick google it appears some older Logitech speakers (Z5500 and X530) suffer from this on even good circuits.

Yeah google told me that last night too. Bit disappointing really, how hard is it to build decent things :)

They are a bit of a shit fight to move the way they are set up so testing them on another circuit would be an ultimate PITA

Possibly unsurprisingly I had not thought of that.

put a small ups in before your pc, it will filter the power and protect your pc from small surges

In a single phase installation it wouldn't matter if the lights were on a different circuit or not. They all join into the same terminal on a main switch. Only thin seperating them is an individual circuit breaker. So it can still happen in a 3 phase installation.

This might be an option has EMI and RFI filtering. A bit high on the pricing side though but worth it if u have power problems
