The Singleton, of Dufftown 12-year-old. a little more 'nasty' than the Yamazaki but still very agreeable

Top Shelf basically means better quality and more expensive over you base range of spirits.

So how do you differentiate what makes it? Is it purely a personal opinion, or is there a standard (flavour, alcohol content, etc)?

As far as I'm aware there are no actual requirements to be top shelf.

It just reffers to the very best liquers. Usually they're aged for a while and made from very good ingredients. And usually, not always, they are very smooth and can be drunk 'neat' (no mixer)

I'm sure someone here can tell you more than me.

I really enjoy a good drop of port, especially Vintage.
I don't have any pictures of Vintage Port I have/have had, However I do have a photo of a topish shelf Tawny I have been drinking.
Not usually a fan of Tawny however this is extremely smooth with a nice dry taste.

I always thought top shelf was at least considered to be highly priced and aged whisky, I suppose a bad example would be bottom shelf - Wild turkey, Middle shelf - Wild Turkey 101 and Top Shelf -Rare Breed.

And it goes from there. The Blue label above I'd consider top shelf but there is also a King George edition that I think is even more expensive. I remember my Dad also saying that top shelf is the whiskey you save for special occasions like engagements, First born child(Not for the child to drink), etc.

I know the thread is top shelf which is pretty much as subjective as you want it to be. If there is a spirit you rate and think people should have a bash at why not post it up people might enjoy the review. Maybe call the thread Spirits Appreciation.

Not a huge rum drinker but it almost sounds appealing

The second limited release from the exclusive Bundaberg Master Distillers’ Collection, Port Barrel.
The Bundaberg Master Distillers’ Collective is continuously exploring ways to create great tasting rum. They used their expertise to finish special rum reserves in port barrels and then add them to a perfectly balanced blend of 6 year old rums. These port barrels are from the famous South Australia Barossa region and have been ageing port for up to 35 years. Allowing the rum the right amount of contact with port infused oak barrels is a challenging art.
The result is one that the Master Distillers’ Collective is truly proud of. Finishing the reserves in port barrels fortifies the Bundaberg Rum character and gives it a soft, rounded finish.
Bundaberg Master Distillers’ Collection Port Barrel, fortified Bundaberg Rum character with a soft, rounded finish. Perfect enjoyed on the rocks or as a classic 'old fashioned'.

I got to smell it!!!

I think if you're going to qualify a top shelf 'spirit' per se, you need to have refined a palate to differentiate the subtle qualities a good spirit can offer over another. This generally equates to the good stuff costing more.

$100 bucks is going to get you a 12yr old Yamazaki. It's probabaly the best easy drinking single malt not blended shit you'll get for that kind of money.

http://www.suntory.com/yamazaki/main.html

I'd assume if you're only going to spend $100 then none of you are whiskey fiend's so something like this will do just fine.

EDIT: If it has to be a Scotch not just a single malt get a bottle of 12yr Singleton of Dufftown. It's a Speyside so it's quite light and fresh for a scotch and isn't peaty at all.

the photo you have there is of cabernet sauvignon merlot blend, entirely different lol

You are correct - the LTC in the Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc blend stands for Little Touch of Chardonnay.
However, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot LTCf pictured stands for Little Touch of Cabernet Franc and despite claims by the OP, does not contain any white grapes commonly used in red blends (such as Viognier).

EDIT: If it has to be a Scotch not just a single malt get a bottle of 12yr Singleton of Dufftown. It's a Speyside so it's quite light and fresh for a scotch and isn't peaty at all.

Where can i get the Yamazaki in Perth?

Not really a bunch of top shelf, just a stockpile so i can get through my first year of marriage, having a kid etc.. =D
Use to like Royal Salutes, Cordon Blue and XOs, etc but I think I abused it too much and don't really like them anymore. Used to be into JW alot, but I'm liking Jameson now neat or mixed with some dry and a squeeze of lime.

If you like your choice of drink on the rocks but not diluted, you can get these cool ice blocks made of slate at Myer.

Friend gave me a bottle of JW Red the other day, i shuddered... going to make a great present for my friends housewarming in Rocko!

I've had Blue, but havnt had Black yet, or even Double Black. But I'll take your word. I guess the point of having Blue is to seem baller. :p

Vodka on the otherhand is something I cant drink a cheap bottle of. Going from cheap Vodka, to polishing off a bottle of Grey Goose on your lonesome in one night changes your taste cravings for Vodka. What else is similar to GG in taste? Pretty much the only difference between the liquid James May put in the Radical and the stuff a few of us have been drinking is 3 years in a cask... so after a little wait a little Easter bunny dropped this off to me yesterday.

Firstly thanks to John (buckets) without a bit of guidance I would still think wild turkey and Mr walker was as good as it gets.

Starting with this, quite mellow and earthy drop, limited release of 15000 bottles.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IIdE06TKrmw/T4EBQUobg1I/AAAAAAAAAZY/VsH9sHXvZfk/s640/Photo%25208-04-12%25209%252046%252001%2520AM.jpg

Big surprise packet this one, huge heat in the mouth but absolutely no burn. (and 63.5% alc content)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-oefIz1MEmvQ/T4EBPLC0T9I/AAAAAAAAAZc/HMdTowthkE0/s640/Photo%25208-04-12%25209%252045%252009%2520AM.jpg

Then only the Sherry aged which i was most looking forward to, fragrant with a hint of 'peat'

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-16d0isF3CZc/T4EBOS9wvKI/AAAAAAAAAZQ/r-Ciw_yzovg/s640/Photo%25208-04-12%25209%252046%252050%2520AM.jpg

Finally a bit of a hard hitter, quite peaty and huge depth of flavour.

For the Bruichladdich lovers here, got a chance to visit the Distillery a month or so ago, also got to meet Jim McEwan too.
Got to bottle my own straight from the cask, bottle number 4XX/640.

Another nice Islay drop was from a smaller newer distillery called Kilchoman. Their 100% Islay expression I found quite nice.

To the guys who imported stuff from scotland etc what are the ins and outs of bringing alcohol into Australia?
Bruichladdich have options to buy a cask, which they will store for 12 years (i think its 12) you can also opt to age it for longer at an additional cost.
They also bottle it and label it for you at the end of its maturation.
Was considering doing this for a bit of fun and for a nice drop in 12-20 years.

The "cork" on the Courvoisier is really bloody heavy, like its made from lead - I'm pretty sure that means its quality! Indeed it is. They also claim that it's triple-filtered through carbon (as all semi-decent vodka is) but also fitered through "diamond" (actually Herkimer diamond (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herkimer_diamond), a type of quartz). Whether that improves it much is debatable... as I said, it's damn smooth, but ultimately nothing special.

It's funny how many musos get into making alcohol.... Maynard from TOOL makes wine, Marilyn Manson makes absynthe, Dan Ackroyd makes vodka...

Can probably tell I'm a bit of a Scotch fan. Glenfarclas 25yr old is definitely the pick of the bunch. Lagavulin 16yr old isnt bad, and I'm a huge fan of the Laphroaig. Crystal decanter was a present from the missus, is holding Aberlour 10yr old, which I probably won't buy again (hence it's in the decanter for sharing). In the back there is one of those Johnnie Walker box sets, with the 200mL bottles of Black, Gold, Green, and Blue.

On the lookout for a vintage drinks trolley/bar to set it all up on, have already got some nice crystal glasses and a silver drinks platter to display as well.

I’ve always thought it was ok to drink whisky with 10% water which is 1 or 2 ice blocks.

Dan Murphies latest catalogue had these rocks that you keep in the freezer and drop into your whisky and they don’t dissolve.

Is that where the saying “on the rocks” comes from? I think the penny has finally dropped!

huggy_b
22-11-2012, 01:26 PM
You shouldn't need to use ice in a nice whisky (according to my whisky custodians). Some whisky's benefit from a drop or two of water......like eye dropper "drops".

I have some of those cool rocks for my rum where I want to cool it off a bit but not dilute it. No issues with using it in whisky though, just not around "purists" :p

NoOg_sTaR

It also should be noted not all whiskies/scotch benefit from cracking aka adding a eye droplet of water.

Some of the Islay whiskeys I have had are great uncracked at cask strength. The moment I cracked it the peaty characteristics became a bit too over whelming. Blended stuff doesn't appear to be affected anywhere near as much, but regardless try it straight.

Johnnie Walker blue, with rocks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v709/wombat01/loldinos-come-at-me-bro.jpg

But he is right, for the $500 spent on a bottle of King George, you could get 2 or 3 really good single malts. And keeping whisky for a long time doesn't "age" it as such, 99.97% of the aging is done in the barrels and not in the bottle - it doesn't work like wine does. So if you want a really aged bottle, buy like a 30 or 40yo single malt - that'll probably take care of the $500 pretty easily.

You shouldn't need to use ice in a nice whisky (according to my whisky custodians).

Humans can't process taste very well when things are very cold or very hot, for neurological reasons as well as simple chemistry reasons.

The further away something is from room temperature, the less you are actually tasting it... simple as that.

It's the reason people cry how much they love ice-cold beers like EB... no-one actually likes the taste of it, so they have to mask it with cold, and since it's a cold drink that gets you drunk, it's refreshing... but just because it's refreshing doesn't mean it tastes nice at all...

Pour, drink. The rest is just bullshit.

Sorry to necropost but I totally agree. As mentioned before cracking with a bit of water opens up a lot of the flavor and scent of a good whiskey, personally I prefer mine cold and like it with a small amount of ice, you get the raw flavor to start and as the ice melts other flavors become apparent. I don't like those rock things tbh, but really you drink whiskey because you like the taste, not to look cool to elitist snobs who follow instructions that they read on the internet, if you like it warm drink it warm, if you like it cold drink it cold.
If you drink a certain way to impress people who most likely don't even drink whiskey themselves then stop wasting your time.

I'm not a huge Cognac fan but I don't mind Paradis. I might pop down and try and pick it up.

My uncle has been chasing a bottle of Richard for a while, I'm sure he'll sling a grand or so at it if he needs to..

Sorry... it is a Richard, not Louis. I'd be happy with the Paradis and/or the Extra

settle down boys.........

i would be checking the retail on these before bidding and sticking under this. on speaking to auctioneers last year (was there for deli slicer) people get excited and pay more than what it's worth.

Those are or are close to four figure bottles Tris. I'd not look at bidding anything over $500 for the Paradis.

Don't worry, I've got all the shelf pricing from a customer of mine :) I'm aiming at half the price or less, as you don't know how these things have been stored.

Jon, I'd be aiming at $300 or less for the Paradis.. new, they're between $500-$600.

What Giuseppe said. I wouldn't pay more than $300 for that. Jon, want to go halves?

enjoying this at the moment, i find this delicious 3 fingers of tiger snake a dash of water and 3 ice cubes. christmas present - longest a bottle of whiskey has ever lasted for me.

i am a rookie at the whole neat drinking, usually mix with coke, however after this experience i will look into expanding my interests
