Was in Tasmania a few weeks back for a friends wedding staying at the grand chancellor,
which had a bar downstairs with all the local goodies that got rather abused by us hahahah
Tried:
Lark Distillers selection single malt,
neat - which was alright, I wasn't overly impressed for the price
Nant french oak single malt
neat - of which I was really not impressed, pretty sure laphroaig 1/4 cask leaves less of a burn.
with ice- same as above, with ice to cool it....still burnt hard
Sullivans cove american oak
neat- which I found rather good vs everything else Tasmania had to offer

that is all.
Zacapa XO in my humble opinion is the best spirit this planet has to offer. I did this myself tasting the 23 over the XO and I have to concur. I previously hated rum because of bundy.
If when you think of rum, you automatically go to the dark barrels of Bundaberg thinking it is prestige, and you like it, try Zacapa instead. IMHO Bundaberg make a liqueur from molasses and it is not true rum, especially when you consider the regulations in Australia to keep the bundy name alive and consider it a "rum."
23 got me off single malts. For $80 a bottle, you'd have to spend at least $300 on a single malt to get this kind of purity and smoothness. I now can no longer pallette single malts.
The XO is even more incredible.

Little bit of a side step but recently I decided to give distilling a go myself. I bought an air still against the advice of some mates with distilling experience (Reflux is the way to go apparently). Anyway rather than make a wash with refined sugars and nasty clearing agents and what not I thought I'd give it a go like the Appalachian moonshiners.
Being a all grain beer brewer the massive step of making a mash with malted grain doesn't phase me in the slightest. So off I went, I created a wort/wash out of some highly modified (high diastatic) German pilsner malt and did a three step decoction mash to try convert all the starches to sugar.
After the lautering I decided that I has a pretty good uphopped unfermented Pilsner so I split the concoction into two batched, one for the still and one for some Bohemian Pilsner( that would come later). I fermented the still portion with some very high attenuating, high gravity Belgium trappist beer yeast. I was going to use some lager yeast as it ferments cleaner but I thought better of it as lager produces a lot of Phenols that take a lot of time cold conditioning to eliminate the off flavours that might make it into my spirits. After a week in my fermentation chamber I calculated the Alcohol to be about 12% good enough to distill. So into the still it went, being an air still I can only do 4 liter runs which after discarding the heads (methanol and what not) I collect about 600ml of the good stuff. All in all I got 3.6l of 60% moonshine.
I put it all back in the still and this time collected 1.7l of 90% double distilled moonshine. I added the same amount of purified water to get almost 3.5l of about 40% alcohol. I then spent the next two days filtering it through 3 charcoal disks. The end result was some ridiculously smooth neutral liquor. I got a bit lazy next and added bourbon essence from my home brew shop because I couldn't be arsed sitting it on woodchips for a few weeks.
I reckon if I went for the third distillation my product would have been on par with just about any top shelf brand of spirit out there. For $30 (not including the out lay for the still) I got 5 bottles of high quality bourbon and 19 liters of Pilsner.
I wrote this while sampling my bourbon, I drank it with Pepsi max cause I'm soft. In conclusion I think people pay too much for their fancy bottled booze.

Diageo rep came in last week and my boss and I had a taste of the two available in Aus, and my boss is a vodka expert. Needless to say he was thoroughly impressed and the taste more than speaks for itself. For $80 it shits on EVERY vodka on the market. NOTHING comes close. If you come into my shop after Wed this week I may actually have a bottle for customers to try if liquid mix can get me the supply. It's just insanely good. AND MADE FROM GRAPES!
EDIT: JUST realised you were talking the the home brew guy from above. My bad :)
will grab a bottle of the 23 to try next time i'm at dan murphys!
If you can afford it, get the XO and taste them back to back. I've been drinking the 23 for a while now and my boss suggested the XO, bought one... thought it ridiculously smooth but not for the price..... then straight away had a glass of 23 and thought "wtf is this shit?!"
I've been selling the 23 with free official Zacapa laser etched glasses recently, they've been the best way to drink it hands down. According to Diageo I am the biggest seller in the state.... and this is in Kingsley ffs!!

Crystal head? lol. This is ciroc. Crystal head is a gimmick. Smooth though. Nothing compared to Ciroc though. Blind taste the thing up against belvedere and grey goose (which are ridiculously over rated imho).Definitely agree on belv and GG being overrated, but the comparison to Ciroc is not quite apples to apples, here...
Crystal Head is the 2nd smoothest vodka I've ever tasted, but then again I've never had uber expensive ones (who would spend uber$$$ on a vodka, heh).
Ciroc is *the* smoothest vodka I've ever tasted... but it's made from grapes, so if you want to be technical it's actually a brandy =p
Regarding Zapuca... Currently making my way through a bottle of the 23y/o, sometimes having it neat @ room temp, and sometimes mixing it with a bit of amaretto a throwing in a cinnamon quill. It is *VERY* nice... but I dunno if it's as life-changing as you say it is above... definitely prefer a 20y.o Glenfiddich over it.
I got a bit lazy next and added bourbon essence from my home brew shop because I couldn't be arsed sitting it on woodchips for a few weeks.Don't bother a with a few weeks. Totally not worth it. With the bags of chips you buy, the general rule is use twice as much chips as they tell you and age it a minimum of 10-12 months... the results will be spectacular, I guarantee it.

My preference is one ice cube.
Some people like a drop of water to break it up a bit
Some people like those cold cubes that dont dilute your drink.
Play around and see what you like!

It's a very light whisky but you'll find it will open up a bit with an ice cube. The ice also makes it a bit for refreshing in warmer weather (when it gets here) If you're feeling adventurous you can add some fresh lime wedges to it as well. It's not a super high quality whisky so it's not like you're trashing it buy adding some extra zest to it. The Jap whisky's like this go well with lime.

Spice King 12 Year Old (Wemyss Malts)
Anyone know where this can be bought apart from Tuart Hill Liquor (only place I could find alone apart from overseas).
Can't seem to find it at Dan Murphy's.

$95 there, $70 online from Nicks.
Bought it from Nicks. Keen to try due to recommendation. Ending up getting another bottle also of something else but the name escapes me. $22 for two bottles delivered doesn't seem too bad!
