Anyone know any good places for a car shoot?

Thinking along the lines of graffitti walls, train yards, truck yards, docks/ports/wharfs

Anything that is accessible by the public!

For the love of god don't shoot it against graffiti walls etc. Cars look best on the road where they're in context.

this is true, when I said graffiti walls I should have been more clear. I dont just want to park a car in front of it and take a shot, more after a general run down/industrial look :D

Saw a shoot happen at the old Ampol on Gnagara Rd a month or so back. Almost looked like the chick was naked, until we did a u-turn, had a bikini on...

Anyways, run down old shop with graffiti all over it...

Well done man, nothing worse than car pics being take near water (It's not a boat), on lawn (It's not a lawn mower).
Take car pics with cars on the road for fuck sake.

sorry lol yeah just under the bridge at night time if the gates are still open.

another one is at any industrial area.. I live near canning vale and work in welshpool so there are heaps to choose from

and my back yard at work is also massive with lots of mining gear/steel/chute/grizzly etc so possibly can make a good background ish..

No location will be great for a Black Car.

You wanna try find somewhere that's quite open, as the black will act like a mirror and the reflections will be distracting as fuck.

I shot tocchi's car down at the Old TNT and even there it was hard to eliminate all reflections. There's some other good places around there that are nice and open. Shut at dusk also... light is much more flattering that out in the blazing Sun.

Are you strobing or issit all natural light?

Awesome shot corbin, thanks for the tips. I've already discovered black to be a pain :S

using a single strobe for now, I want to grab another but I think a yongnuo will do, not forking out for another 580exII

Here's one shot for now, using my flash as mentioned;

Im not really into giving away locations, even though im not in Perth anymore. They key to a location is finding something that someone hasn't used before or is unrecognisable so you can get a couple of shoots done there. (completely my opinion)

Nice work Mang.

Forsure, Youngnuo's are Great I have 4 myself and a 580EX. They're a great flash and cheap as fuck.

I also use the RF602's to trigger. I have minimal problems as well. Buy all of your batteries on line and keep a massive amount. you'll go through them quickly. You can pick-up 1.8m HD lightstands for about $40ea.

yeh I got the RF602s, they're awesome!

I think I'm going to grab at least another 2 strobes ($70 each on ebay) and triggers to go with. As for stands I've seen them on ebay with big(ish) softboxes for $80 so it would be handy to have the option of softboxes when I want them.

I can get them to fire obviously, maybe it's just the fact I don't know how flash 'works' so to speak. I really need to stuff around a lot with it and just nut it out I suppose.

Terry, the solution is more flashes. You see how many flashes there are at the tennis?

They're on to something there.

I tell you what, if there's one thing I can't for the life of me figure out it's off camera flash. Shit never works out haha.

hence my trial and error.

Before we started driving I got the settings roughly right, fired off maybe 10-15 shots, also paying attention to the angle of the light. And then tweaked it as we were going.

Adjusting ISO/flash power if we went down a darker or lighter road. Keepig aperture the same cos I knew what I wanted in focus. And keeping shutter speed the same because any slower and It would be blurry as fuck :P

shooting in M with the flash on M too, cant trust ETTL :P

One thing I need to wrap my head around is angles, so many types of photography they look shit, but in cars it can look good. But I am too scared to try in case I end up with cliche "zomg my photo is on the angles" look

Rolling shots is where it's at.

(I have no idea about photography so my opinion may be invalid) But rolling shots or drive by panning shots seem to just be "cooler" than statics as it shows the car in it's natural habitat on the road or track not just parked up somewhere it wouldn't normally be. That being said some of the statics the likes of Corbin & HRH The Coconut Prince of Perth pull off are just amazing.

Every now and then I just go for a drive looking for interesting places. Here's a few of my shots from all different places that might give you some ideas.

This one is against a lot of peoples "rules", but I like it. It's off the road, against some graffiti, but I do like the look of it. Maybe because it's a ute, but I think it works. This is down at the old train yards in Midland just off Roe Hwy.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d28/Nthn_suss/VEUte2sml.jpg

But for the most part I like clean simple backgrounds. Underground carparks and things like that. I like the focus to be the car. Also I don't have the compositional skills as some of the others on here.

Typical top of Woolstores in Freo.

Don't do this, though.

lol, well facebook is fucked, it adds mass saturation. Flickr will be closer to the true colours. But your browser can affect it too. Also could be your screen, most screens wont be calibrated right from factory.

Not bad at all! I assume it was a pitch black alleyway and you had the camera on bulb and just flashed away?

thrtytwo
14-02-2012, 06:10 AM
Cheers man.

Nah the alley had a few lights in it so I couldn't do that. Would of blown out. That's a 14 shot composite.

Which actually in a way gives you more control. You can clean up(erase) any light spill from each shot and you still have that area of the photo on the next layer.

I totally agree.

Its not easy finding a decent/suitable location (one of the biggest challenges in car photography IMO), so giving them away to everyone else seems a bit silly.
