I seen on the news last night they showed footage from the Jessi Cate memorial cruise. Was a pretty huge turnout by the looks of it, but the thing that got to me was all the merchandise they were selling. There was TShirts with her face on it, what i assume was mix cds of her favourite tunes.
It was reported that $20,000 was raised and the family are goin to use this to get out of their rental and into their own house.

IMO its as if the family are profiting on this tragedy. She's not the first young girl to be murdered and unfortunetly she wont be the last.

Well duh thats the whole point. Making life a bit easier for a family that has lost a child.

I doubt the family organised the merchandise etc.

Hmm house? I'm sure Jessie Cate would've wanted the proceeds to be used to get justice for that scumbag for what he did to her (read hitman)!

Id be more inclined to think that she'd want her family looked after.

Your choice, others made a different choice. Big deal? And like I said it was friends of the girl that organised everything then gave the proceeds to the family.

I don't see a problem. A house and mortgage is no replacement for a daughter.

The family didn't hold a cruise, third parties did. Big difference.

Are they actually able to use that $20k raised as a house deposit, as it wasn't a legit saving?

It was a gift so they can do as they wish. They should probably declare it for tax purposes though.

shouldnt the money be put towards police so they can catch hoons, after all hoons are worse than murderers and rapists.....

on another note I believe the funds raised were $3700...........

Profiteering is pretty bad in cases where certain people take a slice from other peoples misfortune/fame etc.

But regardless the sum it is a cause that im sure the family would never have wanted, justice is going through slowly and the cost of burying a loved one always brings an unwanted financial and emotional cost . At least a cruise like this shows that members of the community (hoons or not) care enough to hold a cruise for a cause to help someone locally.

the funeral would have been at least 6k

pretty sure my grandads cost 12k and that was fairly modest

so I cant see them turning a profit

3700 would be barely enough for a casket... how is the family profiteering?

Even without funeral costs, 3700 bucks raised from a cuise is fuck all of a 'profit'... Had they raised few hundred thousand bucks in getting appearance fees on Oprah and Today Tonight, milking their daughter's death for all it's worth, it would probably be a different matter. But they're not!

Crikey, leave the poor family alone.

As I said before, no house/mortgage/amount of money is a replacement for a daughter. How would you guys like it if your kid was murdered?

That is about as far as we need to go.

Friend of the girl decided to do something to help out in a tragic time, others decided to give what they could. Nothing immoral or illegal about it.
