View Full Version : LS1 T56 clutch setup fouling new fluid

Done a conversion into a VN, has a mostly stuffed VX SS clutch in it. The slave is new GM, master is new Mal Wood, fluid is new Dot4 Gold something or other.
The setup has around 15,000km on it by now I'd say, so my question is why is the reservoir (also new with the conversion) showing a ring of black scunge shit around the inside of it?
Could this have to do with the clutch fluid going through a braided hose that's quite close to an exhaust header?
I have a new NPC clutch to go into this anyway so I'll do a flush of the system when I do that, just wanting ideas to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Thanks,
Sam

no. it's normal.
clean it out of the reservoir and get used to it.

yeah mine was like that as well.
and fluid was dark and dirty as fuck..
just flushed it out.
whilst on topic of ls clutches; if a clutch is not self adjusting. would that mean box out?

Ford also managed too engineer in the same issue. Fit a remote bleed too it, that and a syringe too suck out the dirty fluid in the reservour make like easy if you want too keep it clean

NPC kit has braided line for the slave so its easier to bleed on a regular basis

Same box ? probs similar setup issue , proberly one of the only real faults you could give a T56 except the busted ass hole sloppy shifter

.
All NPC kits we have purchased came with flywheel and cylinder with braided line , H/D kits

I'll double check - don't think I have unwrapped the slave yet, maybe it's in there and I just missed it. I got the single plate coppermix organic.
No sloppy shifters here Mark - Mr I Hate Ripshift, lol :p

Imhl they need a bigger fluid reserviour too help with the dirty fluid issue but the fluid does seem too get quite hot with the plastron of the csc. Frauds done seem too suffer sloppyshifteritis, just loose gear sticks.i removed the dampers and replaced them with solid bushes that and the detent preload mod made a huge difference too shift quality.

Is it worth looking into one of the recirculating fluid setups (with a return line to the reservoir) that I read about on a Corvette site once? Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? :p
Something about being a good way to fix a problem with a few shifts in very quick succession leading to shit engagement of a gear, I don't know it was a long time ago I read it and didn't really understand it...

Seems like a lot of effort for fuckall. Don't know how quick you plan on doing succesive shifts, but at 11.2 down the qtr, I can tell you that shifting gears was quite easy with a decent clutch and Ripshift......
As Dave said, dark fluid is fairly normal, either syringe it out and replace, do a complete flush regularly and get on with it.

No link, and can't even find it with a search now... never mind. Can't be that good if it isn't that popular :)
Thanks guys for the info, good to know it's not necessarily something drastically wrong with my setup.

I just suck the fluid out the reservior every service (5000km intervals) and it seems to work.
Never gunks up.

That would be much better if the bleeder were located above the outlet point on the slave

That is a very good point that I had not thought of. I'll leave it there for now though, works OK.

Is it, photo is deceptive, the original bleed point is higher than the output and also the fluid chamber in the CSC. The remote bleeder puts the bleed screw lower but as tas the system is kept under pressure by the clutch spring I dont think its an issue.
The remote bleed is really a remote flush point. The Ford (and I dare say the holden) system will self bleed if you pump the pedal enough time. Its just quicker too use the remote bleed point

How many times do you pump it for it to self bleed ?

murky clutch fluid is common. The syringe trick is your best bet.

lol, they dont self bleed. the only time they do that is when the slave cylinder shits itself and starts leaking.
been there done that.

MWA also sell a larger capacity Fluid reservoir. That holds aprox twice the volume of the stock unit (on a ford anyway) and is made from ally so it may or may not help with cooling.

something to consider, holden in their wisdom decided to put the brake and clutch reservoir in 1 unit on the later model ve's. Gonna be great in a few years to come when abs system starts playing up from shit in the line.

Pic from another forum pricing from feb 11 was $59 for the cast unit (pictured) or $175 for a billet ally unit

Dave the slave is different on the VE is it not? Maybe the murkyness wont happen?

Dave the slave is different on the VE is it not? Maybe the murkyness wont happen? The different slave was a major part of the clutch sticking to the floor hence why a VZ slave was used instead as part of the "fix"
And still murkyness occurs and just like previous models top of Resivour gets dirty and clumpy

That cast alloy unit looks pretty good, got a link??
