View Full Version : Wont be long before the Zig Zag is closed to vehicles
Read this recently in a local newspaper. Wont be long before they close the Zig Zag at night or completely. Although a lot of us are responsible for a bit of noise up there from time to time I would like to think that we are fairly responsible when it comes to some of the stuff going on up there. drug taking, littering, racing the wrong way up the road etc.

AFTER months of complaints from local residents over the unruly behaviour on the Zig Zag, the Kalamunda Shire has announced it will host a community forum to address the issue. The ‘Community Engagement Session’ is designed to identify all issues and formulate potential solutions to curb antisocial behaviour on the Goosberry Hill road. Residents who live on or near the Zig Zag have been complaining for months about the number of dangerous hoons racing up and down the stretch of road in the Perth hills. The Zig Zag is used by pedestrians, cyclists, skate boarders and vehicles, but locals have said the area is also associated with drugs, street drinking and rubbish dumping. There were reports of burnouts on the Zig Zag last Saturday night and one resident apparently counted over 50 vehicles on the road. The Shire hopes to see representation from WA police, all levels of government (including Member for Hasluck Ken Wyatt and Member for Kalamunda John Day) and local residents at the meeting, which the Shire hopes will take place next month. After a meeting in June, when over 40 local residents met with Mr Wyatt and Mr Day to voice their concerns, a ‘Zig Zag action Group’ was established to raise awareness of the issue. Residents have previously suggested overnight gateing similar to that used by the Department of Environment and Conservation in the John Forrest National Park to stop the same behaviour. Local resident Andrea said gates would ensure a dedicated time where people could walk or cycle on the Zig Zag without worrying about coming head on with a car. “People do laps and race, and it will only end up in a serious accident,” Andrea said. “We think something like that is preventable. “Good prevention is far superior than just expecting the already stretched resources of our police reacting to these issues.” But Shire President Donald McKechnie said it was premature to say whether gates would be the best solution and said the meeting will determine appropriate action, which included the possibility of using bollards. “Council is aware of a number of issues at the Zig Zag; we take this matter very seriously and are working with WA Police to address these,” Mr McKechnie said. “We need a multifaceted approach, collaborating resources to ensure that issues are adequately addressed. “I am aware that a number of operations have been carried out targeting such behaviour at the location with positive results, and we will continue to push for such activity to be stamped out.” Mr McKechinie said while most people enjoyed the site, some members of the public were “using it as a meeting place, drinking excessively, smashing bottles, littering, loitering and generally having little to no respect for the site, nearby residents and the community as a whole.” “Such behaviour, as well as reckless driving and a general disregard for the law is not welcome in our community,” he said. “The message is loud and clear and we will not tolerate anti-social derelict behaviour.” Andrea welcomed the announcement of a community meeting and said it was a positive step in the right direction. “The Council sound committed to working together with the local residents and other levels of Government to review the issues and problem solve possible solutions for the Zig Zag,” she said. “This is very positive and after several months of perseverance I find this also very encouraging. “We look forward to some success to curb the misuse and abuse of the Zig Zag. “I am also aware that Ken Wyatt’s role has been pivotal both in listening to residents’ concerns in the first instance and in then in supporting possible strategies to address these issues throughout.” Mr Wyatt said he has been working closely with the Shire to stop hooning. “I am pleased to see that my idea of a community forum is progressing and a dedicated phone number for residents to call when anti-social behaviour takes place would be a welcome move from the Shire,” he said. Mr Day said he was pleased the Shire will facilitate a meeting with local residents with the aim of finding a solution. “I can’t see how the Zig Zag could be closed at the top at night because of the need for access to houses in Ocean View Parade, which runs off the upper section of the Zig Zag,” Mr Day said. “Closing it off part-way down may not solve the problem. “Combined actions by the Police and Shire Rangers will help and possibly some covert surveillance could be used.”
Also came across these threads on a cyclist forum. Who do these guys think they are!! Cyclists really grind my gears. Lets just close all the roads and make them just for cyclists. They still wouldnt be happy. Would need to get rid of all the pedestrians off the foot paths too because they just get in the way.

Hit the Zig Zags up the other night about 11, the council must be keen on closing it as well, they havens trimmed any of the trees/bushed and in some spots it's barely a car wide, can't see shit, the amount of times I nearly came close to hitting some car parked up having a root or smoking cones on the way down made it pretty risky compared to when it's maintained.
The minute Cyclists start paying registration like I do to drive my car on the roads is the minute I give those xpandedx wearing pingpingpingpings the time of day, most are alright but there is a string core that have the "Holier than thou" attitude because they are taking the "Environmentally sound" option.I don't care.
Keep to the left when using main roads, give me some sort of indication when you are turning and stop filling my favourite cafes on saturday mornings :)

It's a good road for sorting smart/good drivers from dumb/bad drivers. I was first on the scene for some dumbass rolling his (daddy's?) evo one night before he even made it to the first corner. Lucky for him he didnt go over the edge and his female friend only had a couple of scratches. Extra lucky to roll one and a quarter times and stay on the same single lane road up there.

Cyclists who ride in the middle of the road can suck my left nut.\
I think bicycle riders should keep to the left of the road, or how about they have mirrors? that might make them look before the pingpingpingpings pull out in front of a car. this is obviously not directed at the very little that actually ride on the cycle paths, or keep in the bike lane, you know that little section on the left hand side of the road between the curb and that white line?
I think I should clarify. I have no problem with cyclists on the road providing they keep left and giveway to real traffic. ie. Cars.
I got stuck behind a cyclist who was riding in the middle of the right hand lane down Hay st the other week. Made me want to rage so hard.

Though if they do close it, maybe someone could turn it into a closed hillclimb?

Highly doubt Zig Zags would be blocked off. Complaints have been going on for years. Community forums imo are there to just get the old people together for one massive rant, for the local member to get some exposure to look as though he's doing something, in this case it's likely Rob Johnson would come out and blab on about how tough he is on hoons (but when it comes to real crime he has nothing to say) and that's about it. Unfortunately people that support ZigZags as a place to hook up with the gf, smash a couple of safe skids or go for a leisurely drive do not attend the forums because they'll just get out numbered and probably murdered. If 30+ car enthusiasts rocked up to the forum, it would make for an interesting discussion but unfortunately most are run during the day which means only stay at home mums, retired and senior citizens, and business owners only attend them.

I read this as though ppl are bitching because other people drive fast past their house at night and they don't like it so they think if they pull the safety card the government will stop it. I say too bad you bunch of whingers what if everyone that lived on a noisy street decided they wanted it closed at night because noisy cars drive past? All our streets would be closed.

LOL @ managing to turn another thread into bitching about cyclists on the roads at all.
On main topic, Zig Zags is an iconic part of Perth. While it would be a shame if it is shut down, I won't miss it. Never been one to belt it down that road (risk > reward, plus lack of skill, confidence and suitable vehicle).
Losing it from events like Targa West will be the biggest downfall IMO, but my opinion doesn't have much weight because I'm a cyclist.

What is the speed limit on the zig zag?? It's not a built up area ( no street lights ) and I didnt see any speed signs on the vid.... So basically, 110 km/h could very well be legal ( and a death wish... )
In local areas, 50 unless posted otherwise.

Never been a fan of the road, despite how much other people seem to obsess about it. The couple of times I went there were always cars parked half in the middle of the road, cyclists and then when I went at around 5pm while killing some time in the area, it had become a very popular walking spot. Pretty dangerous considering the kind of driving people get up to in the area, surprised someone hasn't been cleaned up yet,

Nothing wrong with cyclists on the road except during peak hour traffic on some roads where it does disturb the flow of traffic. And honestly how many cyclists on the road purely use their bicycles as their primary form of transport? Come on...not even worth debating. I can safely say "99%" do own vehicles. It's a fact by default.

If the pingpingpingpings formed a single file on the left instead of a peloton a lane wide then there would hardly be an issue. It's the cock suckers who ride down the middle of the lane or 3-4-5 accross that cause rage, not to mention about 99%* of them couldn't reach the speed limit in a pink fit. I personally would prefer to ride down the footpath (if available) rather than on the road anyway. I'd rather get hit by a car reversing out of the driveway at 10km/h than hit from behind by a truck/bus or at best a car travelling at 60km/h+.

This only applies if it's classified as a built up area. Otherwise it defaults to the rural default speed limit of 110. Road traffic code says that you need street lights every 100 m or so to be a built up area.

Maybe something like a $50 fee per bike for a once-off registration fee and plate. Worst case, maybe a $10 annual renewal fee, with the fees going into new cycleways to keep them off the road where practical. Just pisses me off when I see cyclists running red lights and other assorted offences and I have no reliable means to report their behaviour to the police. Would also curb the number of heroes on pushies if they were able to be reported along with reducing the number of bikes being stolen.

After spending 3 months in hospital (2 weeks in icu). i came across about 8 people all hit by cars on bikes. Most of them females. 1 came into icu at the same time as me but passed away. I dont see how they can ride on the road most of the time knowing how dangerous it can be. When i was riding to work a couple of years ago (no license), i would only ride on the road when there was no foot path. Its like they think they cant get hurt. But most of the time its the other persons fault. But they are still anoying as fuck. I used to pass a annoying fuck everyday on the way home from work riding in the middle of the lane. People would pass him then he'd catch up at the lights and it would start again

Everyone attacking cyclists in general cracks me up. Yes, cyclists are legal road users however most cyclists don't know what their rules/laws are and therefore do what they like. They then whinge when they are hard done by despite being in the wrong. Remember what this thread is about....
In terms of the zig zags - closing the road all together would be a real shame. Closing it at certain times similar to John Forrest would be a viable solution. In all seriousness you can't go that fast down it - the risk is too great! Doing handbrake turns at the hairpins is also hairy - you wanna make sure you nail it as you're handbraking towards a cliff (as opposed to handbraking towards the bank when driving up it in Targa West). If the road were to be closed it would need to be closed after the first hairpin to not affect local residents - still means all the look outs can still be used though which is where alot of rubbish is dumped and bottles are broken.
Given the road would still be open to everything except cars I don't see this as an issue for Targa West. Shire of Kalamunda are so keen on having the rally in the area that I'm very confident they'd let the road open up for the rally to use. Only time it'll really be an issue would be if they ripped up all the bitumen which is unlikely OR if there is a change of local shire.

It's laughable that cyclists get grouped by most as a common force who all go out of the way to make it hard for the motorist. It would be like grouping all "Drivers" into one, right hand lane hogging, 10kmh under the speed limit group.
"Yeah Drivers really grind my gears, none of them can merge, what a bunch of fags"
Also the 2x bicycle forum threads linked by OP show a pretty reasonable group of people, with differing opinions, some morons and some sensible people. Because one cyclist is writing letters to Ministers, doesn't mean all of them want it closed.
NB. I ride and drive, get the fuck over it, and yeah I run red lights if nothing is coming and ride on the road if there isn't a smooth as fuck footpath. I also agree closing the Zig Zag would be a shame, even if I've only driven it once.

No because I could kill someone. This way if I get killed it's my fault.
And that's better how?
Someone has to live with the fact they killed someone, despite it not being their fault.
I never said all Cyclists were bad, just a small majority, same as drivers, but at least they are paying for the privilege of being on the road.
old berryl locks up her brakes to avoid hitting cyclist, veers off to the left and hits baby in pram waiting at lights to cross.
yes. its still your fault.
Knew you would say that. As above, get the fuck over it. Also as above, I only do it if nothing is coming. And I mean nothing, including Beryl.
What if beryl was invisible?....
Your method for running red lights is floored! Mr Armstrong

So when Im dinkying Spudbears mum up the ZigZag on my pushy to smash her back passage and some Fukwit in a Aristo runs us off the road will he be sad he injured his mum or angry that Im shaggin her ??
I ride and drive, but I'm a car enthusiast first, I'm always making sure I don't get in the way of or be a nuisance any cars. I only ever ride on the road if there is a cycle lane or it's a wide suburban road, pingpingpingpings that take up the whole lane would shit me too....but I've never actually seen it happen? maybe it's just the areas I drive.
I don't get the hate for crossing lights on footpaths and all that? if you could do that in your car, you would. Who fucking cares?
Maybe something like a $50 fee per bike for a once-off registration fee and plate. Worst case, maybe a $10 annual renewal fee, with the fees going into new cycleways to keep them off the road where practical. Just pisses me off when I see cyclists running red lights and other assorted offences and I have no reliable means to report their behaviour to the police. Would also curb the number of heroes on pushies if they were able to be reported along with reducing the number of bikes being stolen.
Oh sweet, a new tax! Why not get people to register their shoes too, y'know, for more footpaths, zebra crossings etc, maybe you could report jaywalkers to the police, or stop you getting your Jordan's stolen on the train.

Rode 36km a day to work and back for 6 months and I stuck to cycle paths the whole time as you never know when some idiot is not paying attention and could clean me up. Only time I have a problem is when a cyclist get all irrate coz you went around them doing 30 in a 70 zone or some old nan won't go around them coz she can't see over the wheel. Get the fuck off the road if you got a problem getting overtaken. Anywho . . .
If Zig Zags close then the resident's will probably have something else to complain about. Maybe, "hoons" racing to the gate, handbrakies at said gate and then racing back up the road again.

Oh hells yeah, some of those shoes are more expensive than the rest of the outfits their owners are wearing. Oh I know, how about a tax on hipsters?:p
