Very interesting vid, I knew space was precious but didn't realise to what extent, wow!
It makes it all the more significant when you read about the tight rear on the RBR cars and why they have the supposedly less capable KERS system due to reducing batteries because of lack of space from their rear end design.

What a joke.
how is it a joke
rules clearly state "no holes, in that section on body work" RBR have holes
RBR are lucky teams didnt go for a post-race protest, as they would have been stripped of the win.
fourseven

It's a joke because they should've been stripped of the results once the FIA identified the illegal setup.

03-06-2012, 02:41 PM
I think it would have if it offered a performance advantage, i can't see it doing anything at all, the weight saving would be nothing.
beatle
03-06-2012, 06:46 PM
I think it was summed up pretty well in the BBC post race.
the rules state the floor needs to be, basically 'water tight' a hole isnt water tight. Sauber and ferrari run the same principle, but as a cut away, instead of a hole (so its a slot from the edge of the floor). their would be a some decent straigh line speed, plus a more balanced rear end advantage with the hole.

03-06-2012, 08:47 PM
It's a joke because they should've been stripped of the results once the FIA identified the illegal setup.
Not that simple unfortunately (though I'm sure a lot of McLaren fans wish it was - check out the Autosport thread). The difference is that RBR had previously sought and received approval by the FIA/Charlie Whiting and a letter to go with it so have been running it since Malaysia or China. At that stage it was considered legal however it has since been clarified, looked at closer and deemed not suitable for future races. It maybe would have been a different situation if another team protested but they didn't.
OTOH, maybe it is that simple.
fourseven
03-06-2012, 08:53 PM
It's very simple.
Red Bull believed there was a grey area in the rulebook concerning the design of the holes, which were not believed to have provided a significant performance advantage.
The FIA has moved to outlaw the design however, saying that the rule book makes it implicit that fully enclosed holes may not be located in the bodywork just ahead of the rear wheels.
That rulebook hasn't changed since race 1. They broke the rules, they should be penalised. The FIA need to smarten the fuck up and those teams that didn't protest are idiots! I'd also like to know what the point of scrutineering is if the rule book isn't used to cover the entire process.

^^Totally agree!
Since F1 has become a "sport" focussed on restrictions instead of innovation I consider it every engineer's responsibility to push every boundary imagineable to gain an advantage not matter how subtle or major, otherwise they may as well reinvent the A1GP series...... I applaud RBR and any other manufacturer (eg Merc for their air bleed f-duct) for coming up with something innovative. It's the FIA's responsiblity to ensure that they're conforming within the rules. Black or White.

They had an idea that they thought would be legal in accordance with the rules.
The FIA, who make the rules, agreed with them that they believed it was legal.
The FIA then changed their mind 3 races later, and are now forcing RBR to change their car again.
How the hell do you actually think RBR should be punished for that???

The FIA didn't agree with the car setup, they agreed with a paper concept. RBR admitted themselves that their setup was a "grey area" in the interpretation of the rules. It was later deemed illegal because of a very clear rule that hasn't changed since the start of the season. So RBR like the sly pingpingpingpings they've always been knew damn well what the rule was, but they tried to get around it by getting clarification from the FIA with a paper concept.
Yeah, totally legitimate. Not.

Before everyone jumps on their high horse you do realise the race is in Canada and its one of the only races we don't get at our convenient 8pm start time??? Qualifying starts at WST (ie our time) at 1am Sun morning and the race starts at Monday at 2am.
The times Kaido has posted look to be EST. Looking at the tv guide on one.com.au it looks as tho qualifying will be shown live on One, race will be shown live on ten. Unless Im reading all that really wrong! Stupid Canada!
This is great news for Netball fans!

its not in HD, ten dont broadcast in HD. we are getting it live but in SD. I dont get it they said one hd will be used for f1 for SA and WA. Why are they not showing it on one this time? it was on one in HD last year.
Franz: i thought the same but checked and no the race starts 2am WST time and 4am AEST. Race is LIVE on ten, what everyone is complaining about again is the fact its in SD on ten instead of HD on one.

Ditto. I'm pretty sure that when the announcement was made re: ONEHD coverage of F1 being reinstated that it mentioned European rounds and made no other comments for the other races. I can live with SD, much better than friggin around having to watch it on the net.
Edit: Nup, no mention of Euro only, just found the link: http://tensport.com.au/motorsport-motorsport-statement.htm

whats going to happen withe rest of the asia races? obviously australia, china and malaysia were live in HD before ten started this debacle. Im assuming singapore will be on live in HD as it falls the same time as the euro races (8pm) as its at night not that it matters to me as ill be there. But what about India, Korea, Japan, Abu Dahbi? They will be on mid late afternoon, im guessing theres no word yet from ten as to wether they will be live on one HD or live on ten in SD?

I honestly think the FIA are now being extra critical on the RBR car just to ensure they don't win a 3rd championship in a row. Nobody is making official protests, so it's obviously not that big of a deal, it's just the FIA...

i don't think it will matter... whether the supersoft are actually faster over the race distance is still not 100%... everyone was saying there were 1 second a lap faster but it didn't look like they i think Massa was only 0.8second off Vettel time in Q3 with the softs compare to supersoft

and if the gamble pay off alonso would have won :/ 1 stopping did work look at Grosjean and Perez. however Ferrari were quick but i don't think they could match Hamilton pace today so i'm guessing that is where the gamble came from. can't beat Hamilton on outright pace might try on strategy.
"We made the decision to try to win the race and it didn't work out, not because of the strategy, but because of the tyre degradation. I want that to be very clear because there will be confusion tomorrow, from people who don't understand the race.
"We stopped on the same lap as Grosjean, as he finished second with the same laptimes as Hamilton. So it's not about stopping with Hamilton or deciding not to stop, or stopping once or twice. The problem is that Grosjean did 55 laps with the tyres with a good pace and we did 45. That's the only problem."
fourseven
11-06-2012, 06:23 AM
Alonso pitted on lap 19.
Grosjean pitted on lap 21.
Perez pitted on lap 41.
Alonso would've raped his tyres a hell of a lot harder up front than Grosjean. As soon as they realised that Hamilton was going to be unbeatable (it took 2 laps to realise he was going to smash them after his second stop) they should've pulled him in.
Now their excuse is they would've got 4th if they stopped twice but I call fucking bollocks.

read above "The problem is that Grosjean did 55 laps with the tyres with a good pace and we did 45" so Grosjean did more laps?

No, I support Kimi. But this shit is the reason I stopped supporting Ferrari. Everyone knows the Pirelli tyres are manipulated to go off. Why risk it at the front racing with the big dogs. Ferrari have managed to get it right for so much this season and then they go and do something silly like this.

I'll just keep posting by myself..
Massa thinks he can be the 8th winner.. LOLLLLLL
Button ended up complaining about balance and lock ups so they've changed his torsion bar, anti-roll bar and front tyre pressures to try to help. He seemed happier and started to push towards the end of the session. They also resolved a KERs issue he had.
Mclaren have made a few tweeks to their front wing by using tape to stick something on haha. Lotus have also updated their front wing. Ferrari using flow vis paint on the front wing which isn't unusual.
Redbull have copied Mclaren's winglets on top of the side pods and made another change to the rear end. Resolved a hydrolic problem with the DRS on Webber's car.
Caterham are now displaying Tony's EPL team QPR on their car.. I've wondered for a long time why they hadn't done this but seems they've got inspiration from Sauber.
Kimmi has made more steering adjustments in the Lotus.
Lastly Karthimuppet was getting in Alonso's way towards the end of the session as usual so nothing new to report there.

Just watched the Vettel pole lap and it looked like he was driving his mum to church! Didn't fight the car at all, had a millisecond of oversteer on one corner otherwise it was absolutely clinical. If he gets the jump at the start tomorrow then he'll be away and untouchable by the looks of it.

Insane Q2... But Vettel was again clinical in Q3. Webber had a failure of his DRS, plus he didn't run at all in P3 due to a brake failure, so not a surprise about his qualifying.
Great to see Dan out quali Jean-Eric again.
Did anyone watch the GP2 race?? Bloody insane. Soooo many accidents and wild overtaking maneuvers. Probably the best race I've ever seen at Valencia.

That Redbull looked SO dialed into quali, as above he was going around so effortless with it. I don't know how the commentators didn't notice Webber had a DRS failure as he had it for several laps. Very very poor from Grosjean, should of qualified at least 2nd and another poor showing from Rosberg when the pressure was on, he should of been infront of Lewis as well if he wasn't ragged as all fck in the lap that mattered! Those two have got to stop failing under pressure as they've both got the talent and equipment to do a lot more consistently than they have so far.

hahaha, I laughed when he was disappointed to get P2, that wasn't what we were aiming form. as opposed to Schumi who was overjoyed to be there - 155 podiums for the Deutschlander.
What a cool podium though, 3 x WDC incl 2 x retirees, it feels soo 2007! Awesome stuff.
Many wrote off Valencia as a no show and expected nothing. I'm thinking this is the most action packed race I've seen for 2-3 seasons.

In other news and something we all probably overlooked, 12th for Ricciardo with Vergne DNF. Seems like they have a dog of a car though and maybe Buemi and Alguesari were driving the wheels off them?!
Brawn said on BBC Shumi's DRS was deactivated 30m before the yellow flag zone.
Yes, watch this space. Chances are Webber may be elevated to 3rd knowing schueeys luck.

In other news, Vettels RB8 had a 25 second lead before all the shenanigans !

Unless he also overtook under yellows I can't see it. Brawn would've been straight into the telemetry when RBR raised the issue.

I just managed to get home in time for the race start. One of the wildest, most mental races I can remember. Alonso, Kimi & Schumi; 3 legends on the podium, Fernando entertaining the crowd post race all brilliant to watch.
On the other hand McLaren are a fucking muppet outfit and the pingpingpingpings seem like they'd be incapable of pulling off a root in a brothel given there fucking hopeless pit stop skills, I'm sure it's not easy but it's all those fucking pingpingpingpings need to do is change some fucking tyres a couple of times every few weeks and not fuck it up. And on the topic of fucking retards if Pastors mum had of swallowed or taken it in the arse instead the night he was conceived the world would be a fucking better place.

Guess you didnt see Daniel get Tboned inside the top ten with about 10 laps to go, he did well to get back to 12th. Could of finished 7 or 8th with all the carnage?

Just an AMAZING race. Whichever way you look at it. Awesome. Can only hope that in 3 months time (yes, its close!) Singapore is this awesome while we are all there. I'm stunned.

LOL Maldonado blames Hamilton
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/100682
"He tried to put me off the track," said Maldonado. "He didn't leave any room for me to stay on and do the corner side by side. I jumped over the kerb and I couldn't avoid the accident."
Did the same thing to webber at the last corner onto the pit straight. Webber was smart enough to NOT drive back out into him, but lost two more places as a result. Hack driver is a hack.

Pasta is delusional.
No space = no pass, great defending by Hamilton.
Overtake elsewhere.

Like most I agree 100% that it was Pastor's fault. But the question has to be asked... what did Lewis expect to gain from defending so hard with fucked tyres, against a driver who has become notorious for crashing into people?
Lewis is a veteran. Pastor is an autistic beginner. Lewis probably should've given him a bit more room and kept some points.
Vergne copped 2 penalties (10 grid places in total) for colliding with Heikki. Happy days!

We agree for once, probably Pastor's fault but Lewis is the muppet. He expects that every time he overtakes to be given a red carpet, double car width thoroughfare and a nice kiss like a gay on the way through.
When the shoe is on the other foot and someone is clearly quicker than him, he swerves down straights and in this case out brakes himself forcing the other car off track.
Should be replayed tonight or tomorrow!
Vergne also copped a 25,000 euro fine! Not a good thing for a rookie driver!

Lewis's first move to push Maldo off track could have easily been an acident. Had Lewis moved as much as Maldo did in move 1, would not have been an accident. Hamo was running him off track and trying to keep him there. As above what was he expecting to gain, he was clearly slower and was going to be passed at some point. It is one of those that Hamo is probably in the right but he definetly deserved it lol.

having my 4 favourite drivers in the top 4 ... happy times :D
Kimi has the car speed, but it seems the Ferrari's dog of a car has actually got better (?), and in clean air the Redbull is still dominant.
would of been interesting to see how far ahead Vettel would have been if Seb/Fred/Kimi were 1-2-3 at the start, without lewis holding everybody up

LOL how's Webber's form. Complains about Schumacher using DRS in yellow zone, turns out Schumi did use DRS but backed off, and Webber was .3 seconds quicker in the zone which should've been a penalty.
pingpingpingping.
Pasto did exactly the same thing to kimi early in the race. Kimi tried around the outside, got pushed off and went through the run off. It's what happens, it always happens.
Lewis is definitely at tho fault because Pasto chose to keep his foot in it off the track and bounce over the kerb rather then go over the run off.
