Cliff notes?

Paul and I had bets on Alonso and Raikkonen to win.
Alonso leads race after turn 1, Pastor Maldonado leads race after second pitstops from 2nd place, in a fucking Williams, with a down syndrome face.
Pastor leads the rest of the race.
Alonso catches him in the last dozen laps, getting closer under DRS waiting for his opportunity.
5 laps to go Alonso's tyres which are 3 laps newer go off, loses by 3+ seconds.
Alonso second, Raikkonen third.

Running kimi on the soft on the 1st stop? Lotus was clearly faster on the hard tyres... able to bring down the 20second gap he had in the last 15-20laps

A big congrats to Williams. I was starting to wonder a couple of years ago why sir Frank would even bother anymore. Sack Sam Michael = Race win. Send him to MacLaren and watch him fuck up that team Hahaha

You don't have to worry about a jammed rattle gun or cross threading,
you need not worry about getting the replacement tyre perfectly lined up,
all you have to do is whip the wheel off and hold the fucker out of the way.

Doesn't surprise me that Schumacher is looking to leave.

I was just saying today that I can't see him wanting to stay another year.

Put the fact that he's not really performing aside for a minute.
It's pretty obvious that he doesn't like the sport that F1 currently is.

Opening at MGP next year, Would be keen to see someone like Di Resta in there.

Jazza
14-05-2012, 09:37 PM
Has anyone noticed excluding Fernando nobody has been really out performing their car since Kubica left the sport? Sure Maldonado's drive was good but he's been useless this year otherwise... I always enjoyed having a few drivers that seemed to be able to push their cars further than they should be. Maybe this is another tire issue as drivers can't consistently push the cars to show their abilities, they're having to drive at 90% most of the time and worry about fuel consumption at other times.

fourseven
14-05-2012, 09:41 PM
That's my biggest complaint Jazza! Has been for 2 years. The sport is fake as fuck. You know you are doomed when the business owner is seriously suggesting sprinklers on the track to spice shit up.

Get rid of the aero. Get rid of the manipulated tyres. Get rid of some of the build restrictions. Bring back refueling. Best driver (skill) in the best car (build, not aero) wins.

Fair point but I think the aero is a good thing too. Adds another element, I just don't see why the had to take away the other factors which make the sport so diverse and interesting.

I don't want it to go back to the late 2000's when they used to hit the 2 sec barrier behind the car in front and then get caught in the dirty air not to be able to get any closer!

I'd rather they kept the aero but made it less susceptible to the turbulence of a preceding car. The DRS is great for drag racing someone on a straight however the passes on corners is what we watch it for. Seeing a car sit on the arse of another duck out and make a big dive is what it's all about. The aero dependence makes is very hard to do that without hurting the tyres. Would ground effect based designs be any better though ?

Tyres agreed, build restrictions agreed... there's always going to be rich teams and poor teams regardless of the rules. The rich teams will almost always have a stronger car so why not let them go mad and built the best thing they possibly can. I might be on my own here but I'd also like to see manual boxes return, makes life a little bit harder for the drivers and add's a new challenge for them. Seeing some of the old school drivers completely at the edge of what the car could deliver with one hand fighting the wheel, the other going for the gears is brilliant to watch. I'd say that kind of caper would be a bit too much to ask of some of the drivers these days.

Joe
15-05-2012, 08:34 AM
I reckon they should lift some of the build restrictions and allow the teams to go nuts... and then allow Claiming Rule Team status for the lesser teams, like they do with Moto GP..

Honestly I think just bring back refuelling and tyres will resolve themselves, Drivers will no longer be carrying 1xx kgs of fuel, so will deal with less tyre issues. When your close to the cut off you stop.

Yeh I think even just having tires that allow drivers to push hard for longer, they can still have that cliff drop off they have and refueling would make the sport better. Hamilton getting to P8 because he has nursed his tires well during the race is impressive but far more boring than watching him go flat out!

I think people are just making excuses because their favourite driver isn't dominating.
There are a few drivers starting to find some consistency and unfortunately their teams have let them down, possibly because everyone is so close the pressure is more intense.
As a spectator it's exactly the kind of racing I like to watch, not knowing if the car in front can make their tyres last the last 5 laps makes it exciting to watch.

fourseven
15-05-2012, 09:50 AM
Bollocks.

Nothing makes me sadder than seeing Pastor Maldonado beating Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel and Raikkonen. These 4 should be at the front, wheel to wheel racing because they are the best in the world. The sport in its current form is a joke and the best drivers on the grid can't win races with pure skill because they are hamstrung by policies and parts designed simply to attract new bums on seats. The sport is still watched by more people than any other sport on the planet, so I don't understand this need to spice things up. I'd prefer the racing be boring as bat shit if it means the best in the world were being challenged on skill, not who can make their tyres last longer and build the best DRS/KERS/other BS aero device.

My favourite driver is leading the championship. I'd still prefer him to be able to race on the limit against the other 3 up front.

Sleepy
15-05-2012, 09:55 AM
If it's just about pure skill then give everyone the same car.

POH73
15-05-2012, 10:04 AM
I'm not sure what to make of the season so far and along with everyone else am still in the dark over the pecking order.

I'm quite happy with the tyre performance as such but absolutely despise the fact that there are limited sets available - I see that's the only issue. Would love to see any quantities of tyres available for Quali and Race and then we'll see each driver going flat out until the tyres drop off. If someone wants to go with a conservative strategy then by all means reduce your pace/wear as we've always seen in the past seasons.
In relation to engines, yes the freeze is frustrating and seemingly against the spirit of F1 however the extremely low numbers of retirements is great to see. There's nothing worse than seeing your driver out due to an issue that's outside their control (Lewis fans will understand this ;)).

Otherwise I don't think the series is broken at all, it's just different to what we've seen in the past. I'm sure there was plenty of hate last year due to RBRs dominance and Ferrari's dominance in the early 2000s compared to the lucky dip we have now.

I too am somewhat frustrated by the season so far but OTOH think that it's awesome for the sport that Williams had a race win, Mercedes had their first race win, Sauber came oh so close and Alonso had a win in what was considered a dog of a car.

jaybee
15-05-2012, 10:10 AM
It's not just about pure skill, f1 has always been the pinnacle of motorsport not just because of the drivers that compete, but the engineering and innovation that goes into the cars. Half of the reason i love f1 is so much is seeing the contrasts between the cars and the way parts are designed and used to meet a restriction, or pioneering something new as an unfair advantage. It's a team sport and always has been. Like what has been mentioned, what's deadening the sport at the moment are the tyres and only the tyres, aimed for one thing and that is more spectators. As soon as any sport starts going down that path, it never ends well. I don't know about other people but i don't need stupidly high tyre degradation to sit down and enjoy watching f1, if you do, then sorry but your not a true formula 1 fan, it's quite simple.

Brockas

Funny you say that, because without Lewis's penalty, and without Vettel's penalty, we probably would have seen exactly that.

I don't know how anyone can complain about this season. The RBR's, McLaren's, Lotus's, Ferarri's, Sauber's, Mercedes' and Williams' are all on the pace depending on the type of track, which means it's got a lot more to do with driver skill.

Look at some of the qualifying sessions we've had. Before this year, when was the last time you saw the top 8 drivers all within 0.3 seconds of each other???

IMO some of you think that Lewis, Sebastian, Kimi and Fred are that much faster than anyone else, that they should be 1-2 seconds ahead of the field in qualifying.

I agree, they are the best drivers in the current line-up, however they are only 0.1-0.2 tenths faster than their team-mates, and that's not a huge margin when strategy mistakes or a mistake in Q3 can result in losing 10 grid/race positions.

TJ
15-05-2012, 10:36 AM
Certainly not the case in terms of Fred of Lewis - way more than .1/2 quicker consistently so far this season.

Its hard - the racing has been decent, but it rewards "ok-ness" rather than "greatness"

07/08 tyres/refuelling with kers drs and current aero would rock imho.

Sleepy
15-05-2012, 10:39 AM
So now that the top 4 drivers don't always win it's not a true test of skill or true F1?
I think it's got a lot more to do with skill in managing the tyres which is why the big teams are struggling under pressure.
Sounds a lot more fair to me, drivers in smaller teams with arguably more skill can now win a race.

I think that's more a case of Jensen and Felipe struggling, rather than Fernando and Lewis being that much faster. I'd say it's more like Fred and Lewis being 0.1-0.2 quicker, and Massa / Button being 0.2-0.3 slower than they should be consistently.

For example, if you put Perez or Di Resta in the McLaren / Ferrari (hell, even Ricciardo after seeing some of his qualifying laps) then we'd see a closer battle between team mates.

TJ

Ok so 3 tenths give or take.

Over a 50 lap race that's 15 seconds if they're going flat out with no traffic. If all 3 are racing close, then you won't see those kind of times, so I'd expect to see them pretty much even.

What I'm trying to say is, that unless you have someone with a clear 1-2 second advantage due to pure skill (think Senna in the wet) then you're not going to see the best driver winning every race.

The cars are all so close this season that anyone can win if they have the right set of circumstances and play their cards right, as Pastor proved.

ps. He's not exactly a chump, didn't he win a GT2 title?

TJ
15-05-2012, 11:47 AM
It was never removed due to safety concerns, it was taken away to break Ferrari McLaren dominance of the early to mid 2000's

00-04 Ferrari

05-06 - Fernando, even though McLaren and Ferrari were still fast often, Kimi should of probably won both but had a hand grenade car.

07 -08 Ferrari McLaren dominance

09 The DD and KERs changed it, but by then the ruling was decided for 2010 and beyond

Just did a check and this was the result:

"It was confirmed that from 2010, refueling during a race will be forbidden in order to save the costs of transporting refueling equipment and increase the incentive for engine builders to improve fuel economy (to save weight)," said the FIA in a statement following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

I'm sure flash fires and cars trundling down pitlane didn't help Lol

Couldn't agree more! The sport would be SO much better this way. Driver skill/metal control would play a larger role, you'd still have the ability to pass and strategy would still be important due to the fueling of the cars. Oh well at least we have F1 to bitch about in the first place I guess lol

crabman
15-05-2012, 12:34 PM
Thats what I thought, never mind the hundreds of tyres gone through. Fuel is nothing in the scheme of tyre use and transport "carbon" output.

How did the old Birdgestones compare to the current tyres for grip?? Did they really last a whole race with little drop off in performance?? I didnt really follow the sport back then.

fourseven
15-05-2012, 01:12 PM
Bridgestone tyres were awesome. The huge increase in aero development meant that overtaking was capable only by those in the best car with the best skill (or mental issues putting their car where most wouldn't!).

What most people probably don't know is refuelling was banned back in the early 90s. They reinstated refuelling in 1994. Why? To spice up the show because Williams were dominating. So this time around they introduced KERS to spice up the show, and completely wipe out any strategy and pit jumping by banning refuelling. Great idea, not. And when KERS wasn't enough, teams started to introduce fancy aero devices, and then Pirelli introduced their tyres. And then Bernie wanted sprinklers on track.

Everyone's gone fucking mad.

TJ
15-05-2012, 01:15 PM
DRS is not aero Rhett (it affects it but you know what I mean)

They actually went backwards on aero

Removed winglets etc
This was beaten by the DD in 09
This was then banned
This was beaten by the EBD
This was banned
This is slowly being beaten by aiming exhausts at the rear wing etc
Guess what will go next...

fourseven
15-05-2012, 01:21 PM
It's still a device that manipulates the racing to spice up the show by reducing aerodynamic drag, you know what I mean!

They only went backwards in aero because they outlaw it. The invention of new aero is always happening, and if we just went back to F1 roots they wouldn't need to! What you suggested earlier would be a perfect combination.

Joe
15-05-2012, 01:22 PM
A QANTAS 747 uses 340,000+ litres of fuel going from Perth to London and return. (12 litres per km x 14,500km each way)

The F1 grid uses:

500 litres (being generous) for Practice, Quali, Race
x 24 cars
x 20 races in the season

Fuel consumption is really a moot point.

anton
15-05-2012, 01:25 PM
make the exhausts exit right out the back of the car inline with the diffuser so the exhausts gasses exit after all the aero, backwards in aero to slow the cars down, increase the mechanical grip larger tires etc

This right here is Formula 1 during one of its best modern seasons in my opinion.

2005 Monaco.
No tyre changes during the race.
Changes to chassis to decrease or limit downforce.
Refuelling allowed.
Multiple tyre manufacturers.
Engines need to last 2 races.
McLaren built a shit car but Kimi still matched Fred for race wins.
No KERS, no bullshit aero.
Shit loads of overtaking.
The winning car wasn't designed by Adrian Newey or Rory Byrne!

LOL yep! "Overtaking wasn't possible before DRS". "F1 was boring without Pirelli tyres".

Kimi Raikkonen, from 17th on the grid goes on to win the race, overtaking race leader Fisichella on the last lap, in a car that would randomly explode for no reason.

The rules say you must return to the pits under your own power with enough for a 1l sample.

The rule came after Canada 2010 when Lewis stopped for the exact same reason - although at the time there was nothing saying it wasnt allowed.

I saw it in the interview I think with Martin Whitmarsh where the fuel consumption per lap was ~2 litres and if he did make it back to the pits it would've been less than the required amount.

Would love some of those old seasons!!

Fuel consumption is one of those points where the manufacturers of engines can pass on the technologies to their road cars. F1 likes to brag about this.

Has nothing to do with the actual consumption during the race, as the transport of equipment from 1 round uses more fuel than the whole years racing.

Some of those old races are just insane, 91 Australian race when it was pissing down they had 5 cars that had aquaplaned into the wall on the main strait with tow trucks and medical cars parked on the track and they keep the race going with zero viability and cars racing past at 150mph. Senna and Mansel were going at it hard at the front until Mansell binned it. The drivers back then had some big balls.

FORMULA One Group, the motor racing franchise owned by private equity firm CVC Capital Partners Ltd., has received the go-ahead from the Singapore Exchange for a US$2.5 billion ($2.52bn) initial public offering ahead of a listing next month, people familiar with the situation say.

In what could be the city-state's first high profile overseas listing in more than a year, Formula One is set to begin a pre-marketing process "very soon", the people said, with order-taking in international roadshows slated for the second week of June, and listing scheduled for the last week of that month.

Things is, it doesn't matter that he's actually starting from 6th, the point is that he's still got the speed to put it on pole.
Any predictions for the race tomorrow? I've got no bloody idea what's going to happen!

Well, last week the Williams had the pace for pole.
The McLarens, Lotus, RBR, Ferrari and Sauber all have the pace for pole.

It's a bloody close season.

Different stewards, different circumstances.

A bizarre situation has developed overnight at Monaco where a 60- ton crane is stuck at the Anthony Noghes corner just before the start finish straight with a seized wheel bearing. The Automobile Club is trying to find a way to remove the crane as quickly as possible.

Could be a race start delay.

Not looking good for RBR.

Other teams believe Red Bull have a hole on their floor in front of rear tyre that is illegally situated.

Also, McLaren have copied Mercedes' wheelnut-in-rim system as they try to eliminate pitstop problems. Now all they need is a fuel in tank solution kek!
