Oh, I have done recruiting for mining companies and currently work for BHP so you want some advice/leads from me or not? Cause I'll tell you how far being a smart pingpingpingping will get you on a mine site....

Screw the mines, oil/gas is where it's at. Get your dogman + basic riggers and EWP tickets and get onto Gorgon or wait for Wheatstone. Or start up with the likes of ESS or somewhere similar and get onto boats, or rigs if you can.

*Glorious may be a slight exaggeration . I like to refer to it as Satan's Anus.

no smart arse intended mate, just simply don't understand your reasoning behind 52w/p.a x $1000 =75k- p.a
Sorry if I offended you.
Will definitely look at apprenticeship ideas too

he was talking net income not gross i.e; you want to take home 1k, so you need to earn 75k not 52...
maybe he wants 1k cash money a week

If you want to go to Gorgon/Wheatstone atm with no trade and just a handful of basic ticket you would need to be prepared to be working 4/1 or worse.. having said that the money would be redonkulous.

Salary of 75k before tax is close enough to $1000/week after tax.

As above. As someone else above said, oil and gas is the future. Get your certificates and keep hammering them.
Buckets
13-12-2011, 11:19 AM
Why do people bother spending huge amounts of money getting certificates... For fucks sake get a absolute bum entry level position and work you way up. You can have all the tickets in the world but with out any experience it's worthless. By all means if you absolutely need "x" ticket / licence then go for it. If anything mate I'd suggest getting a HR licence, you can get it in 2 days from a few mobs and it opens a lot of door for you. I wouldn't worry about fuck all else.
Passage GT
13-12-2011, 11:53 AM
buckets is right, at one stage i had two different working at heights and confined space tickets, because my new job didn't recognise the company that did the originals and wanted me to do it with the company they preferred.
hardest bit is getting your foot in the door (having someone inside is a huge help) after that they're happy to train people up and send them on whatever boring course your needed to do to be 'safe'.
adult apprenticeship is what i'd be looking at as well if i wasn't in my current position.

Oil and gas is going to go crazy...
Gorgon plus Wheatstone when that goes online.
INPEX has the Ichthys project that is close to FID stage...this ones going to be a big one ;)
Chevron and INPEX are going to be snapping up people like crazy. Not enough people for the positions
Tocchi

Gorgon and browse will be going nuts.
offshore, you shouldnt need to pay for certs, the company will do it for you, if they need people that badly

Bottom rate at argyle for macmahons is 75k a year for truckie/jumbo offsider. Rumor has it we are getting a pay rise this week aswell, fitters just got 10% the pingpingpingpings.
And something to remember is a fitter is making 150k, but you go hard, could be on a jumbo in 5 years, and top rate for a jumbo op here is 1k a day....
mr_mike
13-12-2011, 05:34 PM
slightly off topic but what exactly is a "jumbo" as i hear it mentioned alot in these threads?

Get a trade, I will be finished mine in 3 months, did it in just over a year with prior experience, Will be a qualified heavy duty plant mechanic.
Even if your stuck in a average job in the city for a few years, it'll pay off in the end, more and more stuff is going remote operator, but they'll never replace a mechanic.
These days you can just about choose where you want to work and for how much and what roster.
Twig is that $32/hr a flat rate or Penalties.
Salary of 75k before tax is close enough to $1000/week after tax.
Zactly.
As above. As someone else above said, oil and gas is the future. Get your certificates and keep hammering them.
I meant him getting paid cash, no tax spec :p
Passage GT

Brett were you a qualified light vehicle mechanic before you moved up?
Chaotic on here is looking to do the same thing if so, i asked our workshops about it but they're not taking on any atm.
how did you go about it?
Brett_J
14-12-2011, 06:17 AM
Nope, Just because I have been doing this sort of shit for years.
I'm suprised he can't find anyone willing to put him on for an trade upgrade, my brother had a small motor mechanic working as a fitter out at Sunrise.

For those guys that are kinda desperate to get their foot in the door....
http://tbe.taleo.net/NA2/ats/careers/searchResults.jsp;jsessionid=079555B5547063A050982 1483CC2F5F8.NA2_primary_jvm?org=CONSMINERALS&cws=1
Try Consolidated Minerals. Use them to get a foot in the door, get a bit of experience and move on. I know their workshop is looking for around 20 or so people. And as they are going owner operator towards the end of next year, they will be chasing operators as well.

alot of people use Linkforce as a way to get the foot in the doot. flat rate casual mine maintenence. 47$ per hour from memory.
the people saying dont get tickets, thats the opposite of my experience... but each to there own. make your CV look as packed as possible. and all tickets are tax deduictable...

haha forgive my spelling.
Oil and gas especially the offshore side of the industry is all about who you know. not what you know or how qualified you are...
the construction on the other hand is about to take off. CBI are mobing alot of their blokes up to gorgon in january for the tanks. lleytons are a few months behind that and according to rumours floating around at the moment it will be cranking by march.

Keen to get up north and start earning some real money. Qualifed plumber with gas ticket aswell, finding it hard to find alot of work for my trade up there. Rarely see jobs on seek going for a plumber up north or on the gorgon. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Rather than start a new thread, my younger bro is thinking of hitting up mine sites. He has no mechanical experience as such or tickets (except for a forklift ticket, he's done that kinda stuff before). He is keen to do whatever tickets he may need.
What sort of noobie job position would he be able to step into? What should we be searching for in the advertisements, 'offsider'? positions?

If you wanna make good coin and do fuck all, go on construction as TA (trade assistant). You will need few tickets to get in easier.
Confined Space, Working at Heights, Forklift, EWP are just a few that will give you good chance.
