So the Video Game Awards were on last night in America and the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim crowned Game of the Year (fuck knows why, the game isn't as good as everyone says it is and the last patch glitched the hell out of the game...). So I'm thinking, what does everyone here think are the top 5 games of the year. In order from GOTY to 5th.
It's been a huge year for gaming, especially October/November with the release of Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Batman: AC, COD MW3, Saint's Row the Third, Forza 4, Gears of War 3, Uncharted 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations all out over those months.
So, to your personal top 5. Can give reasons if you like.
1. Batman Arkham City - This should have been GOTY at the VGA's. It made what was great about Arkham Asylum (all of it) and made it so much better. Graphics are awesome, the gameplay is involving and THAT fight system! It's so smooth, so fluent it's very much like a movie. The storyline is what gets you, even the side missions and Catwoman's side missions tie into the storyline. The voice acting is something to behold also. It's very very good, probably the best in a video game thus far. Mark Hamill in his final performance as the Joker is great. He put everything he has into it. It is the best game released and is very much deserving of GOTY.
2. Gears of War 3 - Let's be honest, it was a spectacular end to the trilogy. Everything about it was vastly improved from GOW2 and made for a much better experience. But the multiplayer is where it gets you. And it's damn good.
3. Battlefield 3 - It was touted to be the Game that everyone would try to replicate in future years. The trailers and sneak peeks were ones that made FPS and gamers the world over salivate for. But the beta dashed everyone's expectations a little. But as soon as the game was released, it was instantly impressive. The story mode was good, not great, the timed button clicks in some points made the game feel a little old. Although, the single player is not where this game flourishes. It's multiplayer. It's all about the multiplayer. And how intense is it?! The Frostbite 2 engine is amazing, there is so much stuff to unlock and the maps are huge. Awesome game, definitely better than MW3.
4. Portal 2 - Instantly better than Portal, and extremely fun to play. The game is smooth and it was pretty much what you expected this game would be and more.
5. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - I haven't played it much, but the story is great so far and the graphics are awesome. Looking forward to finishing it but it's definitely in my top 5.

Such a tough question. I believe we are in a golden patch for games right now and one that wont be matched for some time. With so many releases over the past 2 months it's so hard to play everything. Here is my personal top 5 of 2011. I'll do my best to avoid spoilers. I'm still on the fence about 1 & 2, I realy can't decide.
5. LA Noire - Not the usual Rockstar sandbox, but different for all the right reasons. Had its flaws, and the whole 'you a cop, so behave' deal really limits the fun. Worth a mention for the technology and the Police Quest feeling of the experience. Didn't like the ending though.
4. Mortal Kombat 2011 - Amazing, Netherealm Studios did a fantastic job with this reboot. Fighting game of the year for me.
3. The Eldar Scrolls V Skyrim - Unbelievably massive game. Huge improvement on Oblivion, and I think it has even attacted some people that dont normally get involved with the genre. Shame that it shipped with so many bugs :( Cant wait for expansion packs.
2. Batman Arkham City - Any other year this would be game of the year. Amazing graphics, gameplay, story and unbelievable characters. Mark Hamil really made this game, and him singing during the credits will remain with me for a long time as one of my top gaming experiences. The story is addictive, (A little short though). I dont think Catwoman and Robyn where really necessary (Maybe if she had more than 4 missions), and I felt alot of the bad guys where very under used (Eg Two-Face) and just their for the sake of it. Loved the viral marketing, Ive been a victim of it since January. I hope there is a third game coming.
1. Uncharted 3 - I've been waiting for this one since I finished Uncharted 2. Naughty Dog REALLY know there way around the PS3 now, and this shows with the amazing graphics and Nolan Norths performance as Nathan Drake is perfect. The story is unbelievably addictive, and I just wanted more and more. However I can't help but feel that the experience feels a bit more like an interactive movie than a game in some parts. I can't wait for Naughty Dog's next game "The Last Of Us".
I havent played Zelda Skyward sword yet, I plan to get into that over xmas.

Added poll. Unfortunately, I can only add 10 options, I want to put Assassin's Creed, Fifa 12 and NBA 2k12 in there but I can't.

i've hardly played games at all over the last few years except for wow which i lost all interest in soon after cataclysm came out and could only vote for the only game i've played in the list lol
Skyrim is just the best game i've played for years, it was pretty buggy and still is but it's just so huge and there's so much to do, i've finished the main questline but still have so much left to do to even scratch the surface, it's so immersive too, in some of the dungeons the sound effects are so good that i actually get goosebumps, i've even taken to reading books on the history of the world cause it's so well done and good reading.
i do plan on getting arkham city and the new assassins creed game as soon as possible though, i haven't really gotten into a shooter since 'black' on the ps2 which was a great game.
really looking forward to diablo 3 too.

Doesn't surprise me that Skyrim is getting all these awards or whatever....it looks like a good game made by a solid developer who have improved on their previous game/s - I'd much rather an RPG get awards than some f*cking FPS game (even though I prefer to play FPS, but most of them are fucking shit and aren't worth the time of day) - and even though I play BF3 a bit, I wouldn't even bother nominating or considering it for a GOTY, it's probably got a lame single player campaign which I've yet to play and the multiplayer is "okay" at the moment (still prefered BC2 at this stage) - The game just has too many retarded things in it, and I cannot express how much I fucking hate using origin (it's quite similar to quakelive's interface, which is fucked as well..especially surrounding the circumstances in which it came in..which I won't bother explaining here).
Deus Ex 2 was also quite good.

I have only played BF3 and MW3, but BF3 for me takes the cake in the number 1 spot. Really surpassed my expectations and the graphics are simply stunning. Only downside was the initial install (which required Origins and the fact the game launches through a browser on PC).
Very keen to try AC4, Skyrim and Batman by the sounds of it.
1. Diablo 3 (I got into the beta on Friday, without a dout best game this year if it was released)
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (good RPG game but got boring need to be MMO)
3. Battlefield 3 (FPS player so I voted for this :D)
4. Assassin Creed Revelation (always loved the story line cbf doing side quest and shit)

1) Skyrim - Love the game. Having not really played the others in this series and being thrown into this, I find it so immersive. There's just an untold amount of things you can do. From reading up on history, learning to be various things in the game, specialising in whatever you like.
I hardly ever want to play games after I've finished them, usually 1 play through is enough, but I know already that I want to create a new character with different traits and specialisations. The landscape is so impressive also, it's hard to believe how massive the world is. I'm so glad I got into this game
Check this out if you haven't seen some of the landscapes.

2) BF3 is the next on my list.
It'd be so much better if they'd fixed a lot of the bs before they released it. It's had far too many bugs for me to really enjoy until this new patch has been released.
I've played a lot of games over the past 12 months. Some of which were good in some aspects, but these 2 are the ones that stand out for me.

This year I've mainly played Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2
To me, Bad Company 2 was more fun but as it was released the year before I'd had more time to play it, get used to it, and unlock things. Tracer darts were a lot of fun and I sorely miss them in BF3
Battlefield 3 is beautiful but needs a bit of work, hopefully with a few more gameplay patches, me getting a few more unlocks, and the Strike at Karkand expansion it gets to where its predecessors have been.
Also looking forward to Zelda: Skyward Sword. I'm promised it is under the tree.
I've enjoyed every Zelda game so far so I doubt I'll be disappointed.

It was officially released this year but was in alpha in 2009 and in beta in 2010.

skyrim, far and away. some points are a little upsetting, but they are mainly small teething issues to do with the different platforms.
going to call it now and say i doubt there will be a game better than skyrim in 2012 either, unless they release an expansion that early...
