The General Managers of the three tracks - Kevin Prendergast (Perth Motorplex), Tony Beuk (Sydney Dragway) and Steve Bettes (Willowbank Raceway) – who hold many years of both first-hand and top level management experience in Drag Racing, Super Speedway, domestic and international Circuit Racing - informed the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) this morning of the following changes:

- Modernisation of the rules around which vehicles are eligible for Drag Racing at the entry level - allowing all road going vehicles with airbags and four-wheel disc brakes to run to a performance level of 10 seconds or slower on the quarter mile. Road-going motorcycles will also be able to perform to this level. (Full details of the new rules can be found on the websites of all three tracks)

- The initiation of a 50 million dollar Public Liability Insurance Cover policy covering the three tracks. Engineered in conjunction with leading insurance companies and brokers, the new policy will provide coverage for more than 300 Drag Racing events across the three facilities to the same standard and coverage currently provided by ANDRA.

- As a result of the above policy, the three tracks will step away from the existing sanctioning requirements of ANDRA for minor events – allowing the new rules mentioned above to be successfully implemented.

- Major events held by the three tracks will continue to be held under ANDRA sanction, but with the new insurance policy mentioned above.

All changes are effective from November 30th and are designed to bring the sport of amateur drag racing into the future.

“With practically hundreds of years of management experience - including the witnessing and safe management of millions of runs at our three facilities - at our disposal, our three tracks have decided to take the next step to move the sport we love into the 21st century,” said Bettes.

“Every week we have been turning away amateur racers in some of the best engineered road cars and bikes, because the existing rules are completely antiquated and do not reflect or acknowledge the huge steps forward manufacturers have made in engineering, nor the safety standards of our facilities.

“For example, a top-of-the-line HSV GTS Commodore, Subaru WRX or turbo six cylinder Falcon with just a few minor tweaks in technology is capable of running well into the mid to low 11 second zone and it doesn’t take too much more to get them into the 10 second zone. A completely standard, new high-powered motorcycle will run 10 second times off the showroom floor.”

Prendergast echoed Bettes’ comments.

“This is about modernising the sport at its most embryonic starting point and bringing it into line with the safety standards of today’s modern vehicles,” said Prendergast.

“The manufacturers have for many years created safer motor vehicles with advanced technology in safety including multiple air bags, four-wheel disc brakes, anti-lock braking systems, dynamic stability controls, extremely strong passenger compartments with rollover and intrusion innovations - the list goes on and on and it is now time for the sport of Drag Racing to move with the times.

“These are some of the best engineered vehicles on the road and it is now time to allow these owners and their vehicles to drag race freely at our state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar international standard facilities.”

Beuk said the move by the three tracks has come after more than five years of lobbying for change.

“Sydney Dragway is right in the middle of the performance vehicle scene in Sydney and like all major facilities, we regularly conduct mid-week and weekend events to encourage performance car enthusiasts off the street and onto an international standard facility. Interest is also growing from various car clubs to have more events and more flexibility and we want to be able to provide those club opportunities at realistic costs ” said Beuk.

“All venues are frustrated in having to turn away some of the best engineered vehicles on the road.

We have been pushing hard for ANDRA to move with the times and the changes in technology to develop new regulations in this area at our minor events for more than five years with no success. It is vital for the growth of the sport and the sustainability of our venues that these innovative changes are implemented.

“We no longer want to see potential drag racers being turned away from our facilities due to out-of-date rules, to see the same people only days later competing freely in other motorsports like drifting, rally sprints or time attack style events or taking their racing to the street and having accidents.”

good news for a lot of high powered deals. i wonder what the cut off will be 10.0 or 10.50s
interesting too see the excact rules.

my bet's on 10:99 and under..

indecline
28-11-2011, 08:27 PM
10.99 and slower jase or 10.99 and faster? theyll have to cap it somewhere doubt they let something run a 9 without a cage and stuff. i hope they make it 10.0 and slower.
but still a step in the rite direction for andra(sorta) hahaha

Yakky Bear
28-11-2011, 08:36 PM
lol yeah 10:99 and slower paul..

so 10:99 and slower doesnt have to run harness loop etc....

so looks to me as if its the same rules but can run upto a second faster.

this --> "with airbags" will still screw a few people.

10 an slower is the idea being thrown around, its also got nothing to do with andra, they seem to be a bit behind the times as far as what new cars are capable of,
Old people running the sport is going to keep it in the dark ages, hence why the tracks have given andra a big smoked stick up the ass over this rule , and to all the ones who wish to whine that your car doesn't have airbags an shit... well your car is old .... so it still logically would come under the old rules .
This is only for street based woopy wednesday stuff , so no need for S/ST racers to get their knickers in a knot

good move for the grass roots (e.g. not so serious) people with quick cars.
Moving with the times, and sticking to the motoring body that wasnt doing so is a good thing to see

100% agree , its all about getting those guys who are fortunate enough to be able to have one of the latest pieces of machinery from the many manufacturers who make rockets from the factory floor to keep coming back . Add a few more tickles and all of a sudden you apparently had a death machine as far as ANDRA saw it .
Most of the owners of those cars will trade em in a year later and couldn't give two shits about putting roll bars in or having to get a UDL licence ,
This is only to keep the guys who wish to do a skid during the week coming back , instead of giving up because they have to fit a roll bar in that new GTR , or HSV , or FPV, pfft not gonna happen 99% of the time .

i`m hoping its 11.00 dont need fuckall, faster than than but above 10.00 its still harness and tailshaft loop. (realistically it might be 10.50) then quicker than that you need a cage.

keen to be able to have a few goes at a mid 10

tail shaft loop should still be compulsory for aything under 12.0

beefcake
28-11-2011, 11:15 PM
thats not gonna change unfortunately , as you can already see the bogans bitching on the drag forums saying its unfair that these new fangdangled cars can run without bars but their pristine torry has to run bars ..... they cant see the logic .
New car crash test versus 70s car crash test, yeh same same . Some have even mentioned trying to retro fit air bags hahaha , still not same same

Ps im not a old school hater

now we just need main roads depo to see the light .. fucken speed limits just keep going down and down , with our "safer cars"

That's never going to change unless all old cars are eliminated from the roads via a massive emissions tax like some other countries do. Which would suck. I'd still like to be able to take my 1963 EJ for a fanny lap from time to time without paying through the nose to do so. That said, it does have 4 wheel disc brakes.. No airbags though.

Beefcake to assume a newly built car with an airbag is safe is quite silly. Under this rule I can take a great wall into the 10's. They have been proven to be quite deadly in a 100km/h crash even with there "airbags".

I appreciate they have to set the bar somewhere though and no matter where or how the cut of is it will upset someone. I think this is great move forward.

Just means i have to trade my s13 for an s14 one year newer :)

They going to check that airbags work before letting you race ??

Some of the LS1 crew were pulling their airbag fuse out before racing as there had been a case or possibly a few of airbags going off over the top end for no reason.

Agree 100% about TS loop.
Harness at any level without a cage is an absolute joke though. It's more dangerous than not having one as you will be 'fixed' in your seat should you rollover & the roof come down.

Just spoke with Motorplex Staff...
Can run 10.50 in any car you wish, regardless of age/brakes/airbags etc
Can run 10.00 in any car newer than 2003 with 4 wheel disk brakes. No mention of airbags, but i suppose they expect most post 2003 cars to have them.

Only applies to Whoop Ass Wednesday, not Fast Fridays or any of the big meets.

Pretty bombed & about bloody time!

I'm a cheap pingpingpingping and I like this.

Should probably get TS loop but did I read somewhere it isn't possible for it to pole vault me as my foulcoon is a two piece and has a bracket kinda there already for the rear section? Or better to get it fitted anyway?

Tre-Cool
29-11-2011, 05:25 PM
NONE WHAT SO EVER.

I do it for my own enjoyment. Sure the track might not always be the best compared to a FF or big meet but im not doing it to win anything except maybe reaction time money (if i could be bothered trying)

I'll add that the ONLY chance Andra will have in getting money out of me is if I can still race to 10.0 with a Super street license, but still require the safety stuff, that i'm fine with.

none of this group 3 licensing bullshit at 351 fucking dollars and no more medical.

So does this mean that a roll cage is no longer required for anything above 10.00 and under that a full cage (a pillar bars) is needed? rendering the old half cage useless?

Turbo2.6L
30-11-2011, 08:29 AM
Seems like the half cage is out the window, yes. Unless of course you have a pre 2003 vehicle that runs between 10.00 & 10.49...

Dave, what was the point of the ute then? You could go just as quick in a street car, no?
As for winning cash in RT challenge, do it tonight when you head down. I don't believe it's a case of not being bothered as .000 is pretty difficult :p

So you can run 10.00 or quicker in a VY Commodore, but not in a mechanically identical VX Commodore?

Airbags have a speed "window" at which they are designed to be effective. 120+mph is nowhere near that window so i dont know why anyone is even discussing them as if they would make a difference to safety...

Now you can, couldnt 18 months ago when i started building the bloody thing. But i also wanted a car i could take to barb's and do skid pan stuff with. cant really do that with 90/10 suspension and small brakes.

the vy has ap brakes, coilovers and suspension etc, so it was easier to build another car for pure drag racing purposes.

It's good that it's happened, but the reasons it has happened are far more interesting.
ANDRA has had a lot of change in the last few months (and to be clear I will be working there as of next week) with something of a power shift occurring. There is some interesting political stuff going on at the moment. A lot of positives happening in the governing body.
If you're interested in knowing more (for the racing tragics) PM me. Probably not many of you but at least the truth is out there that way.

I've just a 3 hour history leason on the history of ANDRA from Dimoff while he built my box. It sounds like an episode of Survivor.

Congratulations on your new job Luke, do you have to move to SA for it.

two cars having a head one at 100kmh each is 200, people survive. its not like there is oncoming traffic or a street light in the middle of the track that has to be dodged. if the car is going to roll, airbags wont do fuck all anyway.
