View Full Version : What time do you get to sleep?
Brockas

Just curious, as I know quite a few people like myself who seem to get our best sleep when we go to bed around 2am or so, and depending on work situations wake up anywhere from 7-9am.
What time do you go to sleep?
Normally Around Midnight - Much later and I find I can't get out of bed!
I need to be up around 6 though, seems to be the minimum I run on.

I've been trying to go to sleep at around 11pm lately, but during Uni it used to be midnight at the earliest and 4-5am (if at all) when I had due dates approaching, and then waking up at 6am regardless.
Much better having a normal 8-4/9-5 job imo.

Try to get in bed by 8 for 4 am starts due to training but generally hit 10pm... during uni would be anywhere from 2-3am and waking up 6ish to keep up the study (exams or assignment due)
generally 4-6 hours sleep and I'll manage. hit 8 or more and i feel lethargic?

I'm normally around midnight but with recent late night gym sessions, I'm struggling to get to bed until closer to 1-1:30.
I find 6 hours sleep is plenty and my body won't let me sleep much more, however anything less than 4 makes the day a struggle

Depends how I feel when I get home from work as I finish at 6am. So maybe 7am, maybe 11am-12pm.
I don't get much sleep though, trying to sort that out at the moment.

10.45pm ish wake up 7.45.
my theories are as follows (after many hours of self analysis, thinking it was depression/badsleeping patterns/health that was causing me to feel tired.. ALL THE TIME).
Sleep deprivation is real, but overstated. If you do the 9-5 job with 7-8 hours sleep and then fuck it up with the weekend (friday go out come home 5am, sleep to 2pm and then saturday go out come home 6-8 am) then it will take approximately 3 days for the body to get back into routine. Just in time to fuck it up for the weekend again.
Only after 29 years on this planet has it hit home that routine sleeping patterns (best done during night hours in combination with a full time hobby) is best for your overall well being.
Quality of sleep is paramount. using a 3rd party app to record your sleeping patterns and disruptions often help in self analysis. Snoring, sleep apnea, sleeping on your back or side, all affect your body request requirements.
Also something you may or may not have considered. Your nightly "omissions" (whether one is self employed or dining in for two or multiples of x) make a huge difference in your awakeness and general up and go. But not immediately, usually a day afterwards. I find that for every "deposit", it takes approximately 2-3 hours in sleep in "make up rest" or sleep debt to come back into normality. So if you smash out 5-6 sessions a weekend... its going to take nearly an extra nights rest to recooperate.
Also if you train weights cardio 2/3 times a week, you wouldnt believe how important extra QUALITY sleep is required for your body to repair and replenish itself.
One last thing. You know that snooze button. Disable it. As soon as your alarm clock goes off, jump straight the fuck out of bed. If you procrastinate even for a second, your body and mind will be in the tired condition for the whole day. Amazing how something so small can make an impact on your productivity. Get the fuck up immediately and do some stretches. Shits fucking amazing.

I get to bed by 9:30 and have to wake up at 4:50, have been having a lot of sleeping trouble lately and wake up several times during the night. Always tired, always run down and never feel swtiched on. Getting pretty over it...
In bed by 10 when and where possible, up at 5.30 for gym during the week / sat morning work. Otherwise my human alarm clock (my daughter) gets me up by 7am sharp every other day.
You get used to broken sleep when you have kids.. not that you have a choice anyway.

Im with r3n. Need minimum 8 hrs to feel good. Often live on 7 due to shitty work and Uni times. Do many days on 5 hrs or less during semester but really don't enjoy it...
If I have 10 hours I feel awesome!

In bed around midnight, up at 5am/5pm for work, shift worker spec.
Can function on 3-4hrs sleep for work but I'll be an irritable pingpingpingping... days off I sleep 10-14hrs to catch up.
Got better shit to do than spend time sleeping when I can get by on less than average, there's plenty of time to sleep when you're dead anyway.

I usually try to be in bed and dozing off by 11pm max
I'm up at 5:40am so try to get at least 7 hours sleep to function properly at work, if I don't have 100% focus I could drop some heavy expensive shit on me or fuck something up, so I try to be on my game.
I usually don't sleep in past 6:30 on the weekends regardless of what time I go to bed. I prefer to be up early on my days off anyway, feels like I've had a good weekend if I'm productive for most of it.Fuck laying in bed for hours, I'm old but not in a fucking nursing home, Live your life damnit :)
Oh and agree with Loopian on the snooze button, don't have one either, as soon as that shit goes off I'm up.

Go midnight votes, we're winning!
Must try this get straight up thing. If I didn't have to use my brain and memory at work it wouldn't be so bad but I find a pretty direct correlation between letting myself stay up after 12 and doing shit at work. Forgetting the little mundane things that could cause big problems! Alarm is set for 7:30 but I often wake up earlier as the missus is up and about then :/ Do really need my 8 hours.

In bed @ 11, up at 5. Sometimes go to bed a bit earlier if I've worked 12+ hours.
Since starting my current job, I've found I can't sleep in past 7:30 on weekends, which to be honest is a good thing. Get more out of the weekend when you're actually awake.
Few times a week I have 330am wake-ups so usually can't stay awake much past 10pm these days :( Getting old.

i work days and night shift either 4 or 5 starts, i just change it to make sure i get minimum 8 hours sleep, even when i'm on nights i stay up for a few hours in the morning before going to bed, then get up an hour before work.
atm i'm starting at 1700 and finishing at 0500, so been going to bed around 0730-0800 and sleeping till 1600.
missus is lucky in that she only needs 5-6 hours sleep and she's fine.
I'm usually in bed by 10 - work mentally fucks me, and after a gym session I'm physically stuffed so I need 8 hours. Wake up at 5.30.
Having said that, weekends I can run on almost no sleep. Massive night get home at 5 and I'm up by 7 - I can't sleep in. I have to make sure I'm in bed early Sunday nights though or it throws out my week sleep routine.
11 - 12 for 6.30 - 7 wake up. Been having dramas sleeping well lately due to medicine.. it fucks with your life.

Even after a full working week and being up for 20 hours, I still only managed 5 hours solid. Tried the usual over the counter stuff like Restavit but taking anymore than half makes me feel written off all day, work out 4-5 times a week, very healthy diet and only have stimulants before my workouts. Might see if I can get a doctor to give me something decent, but my guess is that they would have much the same side effects that Restavit have.

my old job i would go to bed about between 10:30 and 11:30 usually and be up at 6:45am for work. New job i am up at 4:50am and most nights i am finding myself dozing off on the couch about 8:30-9ish.

In bed most nights anywhere between 12am - 2am. Up at 7am. Working from home is a massive trap for me. "Im just nicking out to the office to sort some emails or paperwork..." 5 hours later...
Having "a few" young kids normally throws my sleep out even more. It seems there is always one that is sick / teething or just generally not interested in sleeping at night. I can sit up for an hour with them trying to get them back to sleep.
I have this thing where at about 11pm I get a second-wind and feel wide awake. I can stay up for another 2 - 3 hours easy. Brockas and I discussed this at length one morning... at about 3am!

I think the solution to sleeping problems is routine. If you go to sleep at XXpm and wake up at Yam every day no matter what (within reason), you wont have problems
Also I cant stand sleeping with block-out curtains - screws with my mind. I have the blinds closed enough to keep the moon out at night, but open enough to let the sun wake me in the morning. Once slept ata backpackers with no windows/natural light and consistently slept in until stupid times of the day 1pm, 3pm etc...
Remember we are all cavemen deep down - Cavemen didnt have clocks or alarms, they went by the sun.

restavit is good but can give you a sleep (hangover) if o use the dozile liquid capsules, i find these alot better. You still wake up really tired but as soon as you get up you feel pretty normal.

Both of them are junk - old school antihistamines with lots of side effects (like the hangover you described). I'd rather take temazepam if I had to. (Script)
You can get a script for melatonin (circadin) that's pretty good for natural sleep, reestablishing rythyms.
Sleep ezy type supplements are okay. And sleepy time tea.
Google "sleep hygiene" for all the non drug stuff to make sure you are giving yourself best chance.
Irony of this thread I'm trying to get a few hours sleep before midnight these days as the baby wakes up at 1am. They say two hours sleep before midnight is worth three after... Seems to help the next day. Woke up at 12:30 and wide awake now though :/

Tried a heap of different ones with shitty results. Gave Blackmores Sleep sound formula a try with good results. Take 1-2 about 30mins before planning to go to bed and sleep to my alarm. No hangover like the restavit.
I used them until i got into a half decent sleep pattern and rarely take them now and sleep great.

Anyone use natural sleeping pills?
Melatonin tablets work well as long as you don't have any caffeine within X hours before you plan to go to sleep. From my experience so far, if you do have something with caffeine in it and take a melatonin tablet you can have a restless sleep and then easily oversleep because of it. My mum sent me a bottle of melatonin from the States as it is cheap and sold over the counter in the US, I'm not sure what it's like here aside from needing to be prescribed.
Do you stay mindful of general 'good sleep' practices like not using computers or anything else that winds up your brain before you decide to go to sleep?

Tried restavit but used to suffer from the sleep hangover as mentioned above.
Stilnox used to work awesome for me when doing nights. Just make sure you go to bed straight after taking them. i waited about half a hour once and could barely climb three stairs to get to my room.
And don't take too many as Heath Ledger found out.

When working in Perth aim for round 9:30/10 for a 04:45 wake up
Site in bed at just after 8 for a 04:00 wake up.
Wkends well depends on how many firebugs or drunk drivers are around, that entails on how often the bat phone goes off disturbing sleep
