As above.

Laptop is about to suffer from an untimely death. Possibly via a sudden stop after flying across the room. It's over 3 years old though, so it hasn't done too badly.

Budget of around 1K give or take a little bit. Mainly used for interwebs browsing and movie watching/ multimedia duties whilst on site, but would also like it to be capable of basic photo/ movie editing.

I know not of quadi5intelpentiumi7processorthingamebobs, so please spare me the techobable as it doesn't mean that much to me.

Oh, and would also like to purchase Tuesday, so readily available is also a big +

Are you after as much performance as you can get for the price (for under 1K it would come in a bulky size) or do you want a small yet still very capable lappy?

Weight is a consideration as it will be flying up to work with me, so I guess a combination of all three???

Mac's are not really my thing. Have used a couple and wasn't much of a fan. Or it could be that change scares me...

I picked up an Asus i3 for $600, light weight and fast enough to run most games. Think there down to 560 now

I hate acer, but for $600 you cant go past this i5:

Just format it and reinstall 7 when you get it (you should do this anyway, regardless of who you buy your laptop from).

If you want a small and light lappy that's easy to carry around, I bought this earlier in the year:
http://www.portacom.com.au/portacom_special.pdf

That 11.6" Acer for $799 (third one on the first row). I also went for overkill and chucked in 8Gb of RAM in it from crucial.com (the price diff between that and a 4 gig stick was negligible, so might as well lol). I think you can also get it in i5 (and i7) for couple of hundred extra, so may be within your budget still if you want more power. Only weighs like 1.2 kilos. It's thin (not as thin as mac air, but close), and the battery lasts for 6 hours which makes it perfect for playing movies while on flights etc.

Or the Acer S3 Ultrabook. But I heard Asus is releasing an Ultrabook that is meant to be better than the Acer.

Add a couple of hundred more and get the i5 Air. By the time it comes to sell it in a few years you'll still get around ~400-500 anyway, so it works out around your budget. You won't have to worry about paying hundreds for the windows 8 upgrade, anti virus programs or worry about sending it off for months at a time when something goes wrong.

Anything < $1000 and not a Mac > Mac. :)

Avoid HP, my current laptop is a HP and after how shitty this one has been I wouldn't buy another.

Shano look here

Lenovos are pretty good deal at the moment with their sale. Oops didn't see that you wanted it straight away.

What do you guys think of this for usual emails, browsing, word, excel type stuff?

For about $500 I thought I couldn't go wrong with a Lenovo vs what Asus or Acer are offering
