Bought one for my wife when she was pregnant, my power bills have never been the same.

mine costs $2 a night to run, and doesn't have any water leaving the unit which was a bonus for me.

I'd spend 50 bucks a week in power bills to sleep in comfort, I have a ceiling fan, all that does is force satans fire on me at night.
I will be def getting one this summer.

Same same as my missus wanting to run the clothes drier in the middle of a 35+ summer day !

They *all* suck.. you really need with with an IN and an OUT hose. Otherwise they suck hot air in and blow cold air out the window and they don't work very well.

The only ones with either a remote split, or, the in/out hose seem impossible to get in Australia.. I have spent hours and hours looking.

With mine if you sat in front of it, dead cold, but the room never got cold. Even a small one.

Gumtree seems to have tons for decent pricing - Im going to grab one and try it - my room is painful in summer.

I honeslty thought this with the first one I had it would only cool the area directly in front of it. My current one (delonghi) literally cools my entire room. and I run the exhuast hose a fair way with some roof air cond ducting. My bedroom would be larger than 3 x 3 x 3 in a very old house that heats up like an oven. Given it is not as good as a split system but it keeps me cool, good to get dressed for work in summer without sweating. I have seen the same model as mine go for $400 second hand in cashies and on gumtree.

Yeah I had a look on there before theres a good range to choose from i just don't know shit about them hence my question.

Also +1 on power usage, doesn't worry me, id rather sleep in comfort this summer and not in a sweat shop.

I don't know heaps about them i just know it works very well. My bedroom is large with high ceilings and it does the whole room. Buy that one, if it doesn't do the job sell it for $400 in two weeks when it heats up more.

Don't get one of the evaporative ones, they do nothing. Get a refridgerated one if you're going to do it. I have a small no name one for my lounge room with a pipe that runs to the outside and it works fine.
But it's really only a stop gap measure until installing a proper reverse cycle.

Had a expensive hotpoint inverter one and it only cooled if you sat in front of it, had to empty it during the night every night and it used to shut down during 35+ heat.

Thought this was the go with all of them until I swapped it for a 4.4kw Dimplex one. Cools the whole room really well. Like REALLY well. Feels like a bottle shop cool room after it has been running for a while. I've emptied it once, ever.

Mrs bought one, will confirm the brand but its an evaporator one that you can fill with half water and half ice. Very shit, would not recommend!

Yer pretty much, they released a similar model for winter and it blows hot air spec, shame about it that the one I posted doesn't do both hot/cold...but I bought it last summer and had it almost on constant use, fired it up few days ago and it's still in brand new condition after a few dust wipes ;)

All evap units do is make the room humid as fuck.

I had a DeLonghi Pingu unit in Brisbane and it worked pretty well during their humid as fck nights. They are noisy though and the exhaust gets quite hot.

My current house has Evap which died in the arse sunday night, still trying to get someone to come and fix the pingpingping, rooms been sitting at 33 and humid, doing my head in. Anyway stole a portable air con unit for my room from the old mans house however I think it's just evap also, has a water tray and really doesn't cool shit.. dissapoint..

unless there are some decent cooling units I think I might have to bite the bullet and buy a reverse cycle system and replace evap, I can't sleep unless my room is cold as the arctic!

We have a Hotpoint MAC155 in the Bedroom, decent unit with direct frontal blowing (not from the top like other units). Uses the water to cool the pump so needs emptying every 2 weeks in summer, unless you move it

Had the old man swing by yesterday, he ended up walking up the road back to his house as he couldn't stand the heat of the house haha

It's just the time to get things installed about 3 week wait for Reverse cycle to be done, and everyone I ring to fix the Evap seems to be dis-interested as they didn't install it or can't come out for 2 weeks. Some bloke thinks it's a fuse on the unit itself which sounds odd however I don't install air-con so I wouldn't know, may even get a ladder and climb the roof to inspect..

stupid 2 storey town house with it's hot upstairs!!

THIS

My house has Carrier reverse cycle refrigerative across 5 zones.. its like a fucking refrigerator at my place when I've had it cranked up. When I build my next place, I'm going all out and spending whatever it costs to get the best damn air-con money can buy.

If you ignore the electricity bills, its gold.. in fact, what value do you put on your comfort in summer? If its priceless, then the bill doesn't matter anyway!

+1

When I build, I'm going to be doing a large solar set up and hopfully off setting a huge cooling unit for my comfort and maybe even get some cheques from western power, end of the day you're overall happier when you can come home and relax, not worry about how hot/sticky you are otherwise it doesn't feel like coming home.

The units are pretty basic, power, water pump & fan pretty much. I had no idea about them what so ever and fixed the old mans up with a bit of messing around. Obviously be careful but you should be able to find the problem if you get up on the roof then you can source the part and fix it. Hopefully haha. Old mans was a water pump.

Kambos were having a sale ( i dont know if it s still going ) for a Split system installed for $890.00 my parents bought 6 :) way better than any ducted unit you could get. they are only small but for one room they are awesome.

^not to mention a pita to keep all filters clean, they look average inside & can be quite noisey inside too (diakin is the best in this regard)

ive just had 16 panels put up to help offset my a/c, hopefully it will help a fair bit.

Thats the aircon we have. After a quick google search I found it was voted #1 best portable aircon. We bought it for about $600 before last summer and it works really well. Only selling because we got ducted installed. $300.

I caved today as sleeping for nightshift has knobs on it in this weather.

Ended up with this unit http://www.olimpiasplendid.com/prodotti/portatili/piu.php

4.7kw and one of the quietest on the market apparently. Its not very loud at all and the room is noticeably cooler after it being on for just 2 minutes.
