how many ppl here got beach/sand driving experience?
Everyone got their own recovery gear and rated recovery points?

Are you gonna put a vehicle limit on this trip? nothing spoils a 4wd run more than to many vehicles.

Snatch Strap, Rated shackles. AutoOne stock recovery kits with shackles/strap/bag/gloves. Patrol has a factory recovery point on rear above towball. you'd need to get one fitted on the front.

An more than 5 frustrates the hell out of me if I have to drive lol.

If vitara is sas'd by then I would be up for it if numbers are modest.

Although the patrol handbook says u can do a "recovery" of that factory hook on the back it has been brought up many times on patrol forums that you cannot use that hook safely as neither the bolts or the hook itself are rated.
The hooks/loops on the front and back of most 4wd are not for recoveries either these are purely for tieing down a vehicle in transit. I have seen a few 4wd's come thru work with these loops ripped clean off and we have had to replace the lower support.

Rear recovery can be done with a rear towbar tounge and bow shackle or a reece hitch. For the basic tow set up remove the actual tow ball itself and put a bow shackle thru the hole in the tounge. You can now safely attach a snatch strap to it.
For reese hitch type tow set up you can either use a unit that slides into the reciever like this and the snatch strap hook to it via the bow shackle.
http://www.bushranger.com.au/hitch_recovery/recovery_hitch_4.jpg
Or you can just use a snatch strap around the pin inside the reece hitch itself.
http://i735.photobucket.com/albums/ww355/zukenutter/22e6843e.jpg

On the front if you have a steel bar there is usually eyelet you can hook a bow shackle onto. Or you can buy aftermarket recovery hooks for about $20ea and there is usually somewhere u can bolt them on. I know on the Hilux they bolt in place of the factory tie down points.

For a beach trip a bare miniumum i would say at least one recovery point is enough, a snatch strap, 2x bow shackles and a shovel.
Snatch strap can be had for about $100 from most auto places.
Bow shackles are used because they disperse the force around the shape of the shackle were as a D shackle the load tends to be directed onto the pin and thread.
A long handle shovel is handy as if you are stuck in deep sand digging a clear path around the wheels will make a recovery alot quick, safer and less strain on equipment.

Thing with sand driving is tyre pressure, drop your tyres down to 12-15psi and you should have no trouble driving on sand unless you loose momentum in some really soft sand. Simplist way to see if you pressure is right when driving push the clutch in or bang it in N if your tyres are low enough you should roll for a little bit without any drive, if you pretty much stop or sink straight way then u need to air down a bit.

I'm in, sounds good.

mr mike - yes and yes.

Anyone got an exhaust jack? Beats the shit out of digging sand with a shovel if you do get bogged.

Half the fun of 4wd'ing is recovering other vehicles.

i have all the gear (inc winch) and plenty of experience, tho i wont recover anyone without rated recovery points.

suggest that no one comes without rated recovery points. we should have plenty of gear between us.

Great to see a good response of people that maybe attending this event. It should be a good one guys. All recovery gear is required as always.

Any inexperienced people who are thinkin of going on this trip should go buy the latest 4WD Action magazine (one with white Landrover on the front) it has a pretty good artical on how to drive in sand, recovery points, sand recoveries and tyre pressures.

the UHF CB now goes to 80, not 100% sure on the details but its something like the signal has been halfed making an extra 40 channels. Been in effect for a few months now. I know my GME had it programmed in so all i had to do was access the GME website after a certain date then press the buttons in a certain sequence and it reprogrammed my UHF for 80ch. Some radios can be taken into shops and be reprogramed

mr_mike
20-11-2011, 06:57 PM
i think we done 7km up the beach from Lano and back. Unfortunatly day did not go all that great.
Who would of thought a $150k RR Sport on 20's would be no good on the beach. Ended up rollin the back left of the bead and a heater hose unclip from where its supposed to be held in and was hit by the engine fan causing a hole in it and a cloud of steam to come out from the RR.

Peta will probably smash some pics up in the next couple days, the 60 series jumping was piss funny

BOSS 290

Was an adventurous day, not much 4wding, plenty of time spent recovering stuck vehicles, mine included!

Next time we might have to stay off the beach. 2nd time out there and 2nd time with the same end result.

devilfish
20-11-2011, 07:12 PM
i'm gonna ditch the mud tyres, get some 12.5 inch wide AT tyres even at 10 psi the jeep was too light to bag them out.

if you didnt need another vehicle to pull you out then it doesnt count as a recovery!! The paj rolled out of there with ease once you got the tyres down to 10psi. The beach is actually pretty good if you avoid Narrow Neck, after where the Rangie got stuck the beach is rock solid and you can cruise all the way to Wedge at about 60kph.

So who's up for powerlines?

mr_mike
20-11-2011, 07:26 PM
james_2007 isnt that only for newer GME radios?

it will do all of these models

http://www.gme.net.au/public/images/about/chart2.jpg

1. Select Channel 7.

3. Select Channel 23.

4. Switch the radio OFF then ON again.

7. Select Channel 15.

8. Switch the radio OFF then ON again.

My apologies for the bad day out guys, I think a lesson learned here is to turn away vehicles that rock up ill prepared for the driving we intend to do, but the RR was a first for us and I think we know what to do next time.

Kudos to the guy for taking an expensive vehicle offroad, but maybe a better set of tyres would have gleaned better results.

Again, sorry for the boring day guys and I hope we can make it up to you on the next one.

I had a fat of time launching the Land Cruiser in the dunes. That 4wd can absolutely take some punishment. Really don't want to sell it. I can't see the Pootrol doing that. BTW its got a a AMC 360 V8 in the Land Cruiser. (American Motor Company). They come out in your Rambler Javelins and Jeeps. Not a very revy motor but its got a shit load of torque. Conversion and machine work done by myself. its been the best $50 engine ive ever had.

Cheers to everyone that came along.

OUCH

mr_mike
21-11-2011, 06:21 PM
i got stuck just behind the jeep in the first pic, but luckily dropping to 12psi and smashing lo range reverse i manage to get myself out.

Biggest problem for the rangie was the tyres, even dropping the pressure the sidewalls just werent big enough to allow the tyre to bag out, like most low profile tyres the footprint doesnt change much when u drop the pressure.
Spewin we couldnt continue along to Wedge as i like it up there. The beach was rock solid just after where the rangie got stuck and is easy cruising.

So Devilfish when are you making a thread for your harvey overnighter? ;)

The sand was that soft in areas walking would see you sink a couple of inches. The sand along the water was hard, but the thought of having to drive along the water with the chance of drowning the 4wd didn't have appeal. The Paj did ok after mr_mike dug the sand out and aided with directions to get it out. I didn't need a tow fortunately. I was keen as fuck to get out though, big relief. The RR reminds me of the Terri Turbo I had, goes like a shower of shit but useless off road. 20" 50 or 55 profile tyres do not balloon when pressures are dropped.

I'd be keen to head up and do a section of the powerline tracks next time. I'll fit the STT's for that.

That bit of the beach is always trouble, we have been through there with cars stuck left and right. Doesn't matter how big or capable your car is its still really difficult to get people out. Best bet is usually the shovel and a bit of elbow grease.

yeah we had the same problem through that stretch, was made worse cause an 80 series got stuck on the main track, my uncles 80, old mans gu and my gq managed to do down and get back up top with a run up, but my brothers mq got stuck and then others got stuck trying to recover lol, was a big snowball, we all got out in the end, my lil bro's mq shorty (with right tyre pressures) is the best beach car i've been in, l28 loves a rev and was a great car on the beach.
