View Full Version : Watt’s parallelogram - wtf?
So me and a... how can i put this. fucking wacko scientist are in the middle of doing a bit of work to my car, mainly beefing up the rear end as I keep snapping control arms.
Now I have trouble understanding this guy at the best of times, but I stick with it because to be honest hes the smartest guy I know. hes told me today that he wants to off my rear pan hard and install a "Watt’s parallelogram" in its place. natrually i said wtf is that shit and he tried to explain. this made things worse and after a google image search im still no closer to understanding wtf he is going on about.
can someone explain this? please?

Try this.
EDIT: Basically: The use of two staggered arms on a central pivot allows the point at which they connect to the suspension to remain in a relatively central position throughout the travel. You can demonstrate with your hands held pointing towards each other in a parallel fashion. If you imagine your wrists are fixed, the natural tendancy for the tips of your fingers is to get closer and then move apart through the arc of motion. Having them pivot on a linked bar allows the central point to remain well, centralised.

Pan hard rod set ups push the diff to one side when going low. Maybe something to do with that.

How are they snapping?? Maybe he think as you flex the diff is moved to one side to much due to it pivoting from one end of the panhard rod. That makes sense if your lada doesnt run bushes but I would think ALOT of flex would make that the issue.
they tend to snap about 3/4 of the way down to the diff. ive done it about 3 times now.. makes finishing the track pretty tricky when your whole diff is moving backwards and forwards. Plus its a bit of a chain reaction, once one goes so does both shocks and normally the upper arms will sheer a bolt at the same time
