My girlfriend has gone gluten free in the past few months and we're finding it very hit and miss for food thats ok/good and other crap not worth eating.
So if you or your partner is gluten free what have you found good/bad?

So far all thats been worth mentioning as ok/good is the gnocchi from coles and the burgers from jus burgers and grill'd

Rice pasta is shit, as are all the gluten free wraps we've tried

By need or by want?

If its by want, tell her to shut up and eat some bread

Mexican food. (corn based obviously)

Asian

Avoid the substitutes and just go for food that normally doesn't have gluten

i have Coeliac disease so any questions about gluten free just PM me ( if you wish ) and i'll try and help, i've been gluten free/coeliac for the past 7 or 8 years and have tried quite a few different foods over that time!

Roast dinners are great, but watch out some seasonings will have gluten in them.

Learn to make fried rice. The trick is to cook your rice at least a day before and lay it out in a tray to dry in the fridge. Fry whatever you want in a wok/pan and add the rice with some soy sauce.

Polenta is piece of piss. Add water and stir through on heat. You can fry or grill it the next day too. Sooooo good. VERY filling too, like more so than bread.

There are so many substitutes for gluten these days, you can almost just pick a regular recipe and replace the gluten with something else, breadcrumbs - rice crumbs, flour - corn flour etc.

Summer's coming up, there's nothing like a refreshing salad.

I've cooked polenta in the past but I just figured it would have gluten in it being from the husk of wheat?

A lot of mexican has gluten, same with asian but fried rice has become a good one

It's gluten free by recommendation of the doc and is working very well

I believe coles and woolies have dedicated sections to gluten free foods, normally next to the health foods/supplements. My sister is a coeliac and from what she says there is plenty of Gluten free options around, even alot of magor food chains do gluten free. ie Dominos?, there is a pizza joint at hillary's Little Caesars? and south of the river there is a bakery dedicated to Gluten free products who i think distribute to north of the river.

Polenta is pure corn (Maize), no gluten what so ever. It's extremely versatile, you can eat it like a mash, you can fry it, you can make it into a pizza base and bake it etc.

When cooking pastry, use vodka instead of water.

http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/09/make-your-pie-crusts-extra-crispy-by-using-vodka-instead-of-water/

Without the water, some form of wizardry occurs and the water molecules don't bind with the starch or whatnot, creating a gluten-free base.

A friend of mine keeps buying gluten free things, she seems to think that not eating gluten replaces going to the gym. As retarded as this logic sounds, it got even more retarded when she ordered pizza and got the gluten free pizza base. She ate 1 slice and gave the rest to me it was so bad. The base literally tasted like toast.

Try quinoa (say it like keen-wa), is a very nutritious grain from south America. It has all the essential amino acids (aka balanced protein which is rare for anything non meat) and is cooked just like rice.

gluten free beer is now available.

gluten free beer has been available for some time, Billabong is one of them but be prepared to pay, around $80 carton but then again, anything gluten free is bloody expensive, like $6 for a loaf of bread, $4 for a 250g packet of pasta, $6 for a small box of cereal etc etc!

stuff that i think tastes good ( bearing in mind i'm used to the tastes now ) are:
san remo gluten free pasta ( not as bad as the rice pastas you can get )
most of the breads are good but i reckon they need to be toasted to taste good ( to dry/dense if not toasted and as they are almost all pre-frozen they aren't soft and fresh like normal bread )
gluten free biscuits by macro
gluten free breakfast cereals by freedom foods ( quite a bit of their stuff tastes ok )
basco bread mixes and cake mixes are pretty good
macro donut mix is GOOD
fantastic rice crakers
delight rice/corn chips
doritos plain corn chips are ok
most of the Old El Paso taco stuff is gluten free like the taco kits/seasonings ( not the wraps of course )
Raguletto pasta sauces are good
Troll gumi bear rings ( says gluten free on top of lid )
Kraft do range of mayos, sauces etc that are gluten free
you can get gluten free soy sauce
some of the fountain brand sauces are gluten free, like spicy red, barbeque

there's quite a list of stuff i've found over time that's ok.

i also bought one of the 4 ingredient cook books that is the gluten free edition.

Fucking lol, and I thought I got weird looks asking for no meat.

Do they just slap all the ingredients in one of their containers or something? I've heard of people taking in their own buns before actually...
