Hey all, I am currently looking at buying an 2006 JAGUAR X-TYPE X400 MY06 SPORT. It's a 2.1L V6 (FWD).
It's not really my kind of car (looks wise) but I can get it for a really good price, and since I'll need a 'nice' car (Merc/Jag/BMW/Audi/Lexus etc) for work next year I thought it's to good an offer to pass up.
I'm just after some opinions (Karl I'm looking at you!) on the pro's and con's of this car, if anyone's owned one what their thought are, service costs, shit that's likely to go wrong/break, common faults etc...

Cheers, Jesse.

I am currently on the look out for something in the price range and decided to go have a look at one of these.

they are shit in my opinion. it drove no quieter or smoother than a VT and the build quality just wasnt what I was expecting of a Jag. It was slow, and it didnt take a liking to being thrown into a corner (niether did the sales guy) . even the features werent up to scratch.

I dunno if I was just expecting more from the mighty Jaguar but I walked away very dissapointed, I would suggest taking it for a test drive (a good one) and making your mind up for yourself. and take into account that something like a water pump is going to have you bent over the service desk un-lubed

WHS.

Knowing someone who has owned one, they are dissapointing, underpowered and unreliable. Residual values not great either.

He sold it after 9 months for what sounded like a steal.

He traded up/down (because some people have stigma's) to a 06/07 Saab 9-3ss.

Owned by Ford, designed by Land rover and built in Britain.

Can't expect great things.

Hmmm not exactly what I was hoping to hear. Market value on these is around $20,000 and the one I can get is $12,000, the question is does the price justify the bad points??

It's an odd car using the Mondeo platform, originally being AWD before becoming predominately FWD with an AWD option in 05. The styling is also, well, different.

Redbook Says its worth 20k - Redbook is wrong

They are only worth 12-15k depending on condition - I wouldn't exactlly say your getting it for a steal! But they are a cheap car that look OK ish

Drive like shit however, buy a mondeo!

Expect a slightly inflated premium when it comes to servicing and parts too.

Even though it's based of a Mondeo, as-soon as the mechanic see's Jaguar $$ ⬆

BTW what kind of coin are you looking to spend?

~15K, I'd be looking into a 2001 E36 BMW 530i

To be perfectly honest I wasn't looking to buy anything until next year, but this just came up so I though I should at least consider it. Original plan was to buy a new car July/August next year, probs a BMW 530d or if they were a little pricey still then possibly the 520d. I don't want a fast/thirsty car for a daily.

My uncle used to have one, a 2.5 V6 AWD.

Comfy car, and the Jaguar specific bits on the engine (intake mani, exhaust) made for quite a nice engine note, but its still a Mondeo at heart.

He loved the car except for:

- the half dozen factory recalls
- the tyres kept going flat due to porous alloy wheels
- the drivers seat wore completely through the leather side bolster within 12 months
- had a severe rear suspension clunk at one point
- and the gearbox shitting itself whilst he was in Albany...

Lucky for him he had extended warranty. Nothing else went wrong with it in the time he had it though apart from the above, and all was fixed (even the leather on the drivers seat) no questions asked by Barbagallo Jaguar.

Once that ran out, he sold it and got an Audi.

Clearly not for the reliability aspect I assume? :P

Yeah those Jags are only good while under warranty. Even little things like finding wheels for it will be a bastard (5x108)...
If you want to go slow comfortably, why not look at Mercs?

Depends on the E46, M3's have the most support followed by 330/328's. Lots of kits avaiabe from the states to turbo/ supercharge but even flash tunes, pulleys, exhausts, CAI's etc are all readily available.

My E46 has low km's and I've got it up for $24k. Can get higher km examples from around $22k. The 330's are at the top end of the 3 series prices though as they had so much more as standard over base model 3 series, and were twice the price of a 318i when new ($50k vs $100K)
Fuel wise the 330 was awesome as well, 7.6L/100km combined.

I'll leave it there as it's going a bit off topic

2nd hand Accord Euro Luxury would be a far better option. It might not have the wank factor of the Jag/BMW/Merc but it's a Honda so it will be reliable, reasonable to run & maintain and you won't have a problem offloading it when your done with it.

The Audi has not had one problem in 6 years!

P.S. if anyone is keen, its for sale for 35k.. 3.0 turbodiesel, gunmetal grey, 19" rims, bose premium sound, FSH and in mint condition. He has a new X3 3.0D M-Pack on the way.

Cheers for the info everyone! I'll have to have a good think about it, as I'm not really after a a car that's going to have continual issues. I also did wonder how hard it would be to offload...

Import a late model Nissan Cima.

I'd have to agree here, not on a biased opinion because I actually own a CL9 euro.
I was originally in the same boat as the O.P. And wanted something solid and affordable....
Although things happened and I spent cash on mine to an arguable extent.

Mine is an MY06 Lux so it was the top of the range when I bought it new.
Now you could easily pick up an earlier model (03-05) for about 20-25k.
