I'm moving further away from the dirty southies, up around Tapping, Wanneroo area, and am looking for a gym. Main thing I do not want is the monthly direct debit, even if you don't go. Working up north means I am only home for 3 months a year, and the gyms that want 12 months worth of payment can kiss my ass.
Have been going to Adrenaline in Warwick for a bit as you can buy 10 visits at a time, and they are valid for 12 months, but would like something a little closer.
Ideas anyone? The more free weights, the better. Anyone been to the Colosseum in Joondalup?

How about joining up with crossfit? They have casual rates and you pay for each time you go.

Crossfit is not for someone just starting out, would recomend at least a year of normal training to increase base fitness level before trying that. Unless monk has been training previously, then by all means.

I've been going there for ages now, heaps of free weights, very very rarely busy, nice owners.

Crossfit hey??? To be honest haven't even considered it. Most of my training has been strength based compound movements. Squats, deads, etc etc. With a little isolation/assistance work thrown in.
Been training consistently for the last 2 years after a 10 year break of booze, shit food and general misbehaving. Strength levels have gone up, but general fitness levels leave a lot to be desired.
So what's the cliff notes on crossfit from someone that does it? Scanning interwebs now...

In crossfit we do all sorts of workouts during each session - strength, cardio and all round fitness/conditioning are involved in each session.
Check http://www.rawedgefitness.com/wod.html, some of the workouts we do each day.

Jetts is fucking gay, come check out surge in clarkson, best gym around by far. If you want to pay per session it's a bit steep at $20, however I pay $17 per week. They do a membership which is for people working away where you pay for a certain amount of visits and it will work out to be fuck all compared to paying per session. The gym has iPod players on all cardio equipment, led tvs, virtual reality mountain biking, bulk weightliftig equipment and all equipment is new and constantly being upgraded to the latest and greatest. Im pretty sure they do a 7 day free trial aswell so try before you buy. Everyone I have suggest the trial to has joined because it's got a really good atmosphere.

+1 for jetts, unless you want to focus primarily on strength training
I like Jetts cause they are everywhere, cheap, and i do mostly cardio + some strength work
That said, they will still direct debit you each month, but i believe you can suspend your account then re-activate it
they do 3 day trials so you can give it a go

Spoilt for choice up that way now. Two new gyms have opened in the last 6 months. One new 24hour one near Continental tyres on Wanneroo Rd and the other 24 hour behind Shell petrol station.
Aquamotion is also good but ive stopped going there now, cant seem to make time for it atm.
Jetts are pretty limited on gear, good for beginners but not so much if you want to get the most out of your training sessions.
I go to adrenaline health and fitness just off beach rd behind warwick shops, oldschool gym thats been renovated abit :)
thing is with crossfit you can scale the standard weight down to something which you can manage, and it will still be challenging.
its perfect if you have long term or are recovering from an injury.
youtube 'what is crossfit' and you will get a pretty good idea
like Nik said, the gyms usually work on a pay as you use basis. its more expensive than a regular gym but so much more rad.

At the moment cross fit looks to be a winner. "Functional" strength is what I have been chasing from the start.
As much as I am sitting here saying that cardio is the devil, and that lifting heavy shit is sooooooo much easier, this does look like a masochistic combo of the two. Will swing past the one up in Joondalup this arvo and have a chat.
Now to get the missus to join up as well...

+1 for surge, apparently from what i have heard jetts is crap for any sort of weights training,
surge is the only gym around with strive gym equipment which is good too, allows you to isolate different parts of the muscle

I've been going there on and off for the last 12 months as well. Don't mind that place at all, and I like the fact that it looks like a gym. Not like these "wellness centers" that I have seen around the place...
Whilst I do believe that isolation machines have their place, I much rather work several muscle groups, through a wider range of movement.
