Thank you SSL.

^This. Couldn't give a fuck what internet piracy policy they want to implement. Unless they have a warrant to view my SSL traffic, they can go fuck themselves.

SSL - Transport Layer Security. Essentially it's an encrypted data stream.

So SSL "hides" everything?

Doesn't that look dodgy in the eyes of the govt and ISP etc?

Sure if they see that there's a lot of traffic going back and forth over an SSL connection they might start to wonder what it is. You could simply say you do a lot of graphics editing and are uploading/downloading to a server, video editing etc. As far as I'm aware, they need federal approval in the form of a warrant to be able to inspect the flow of traffic and for that they have to have reasonable suspicion that you're doing something illegal.

From memory your connections to say NetBank are all SSL encrypted - how does it work for general browsing and downloads?

On phone so didn't see replies my bad

Oh, so if I'm using torrents etc "SSL" can hide it to some extent?

Problem is, if you're using it all the time, they'd suspect something and might have a peek around and realise you're uploading/downloading large quantities of copyrighted material

argh.

Just because traffic is encrypted, doesn't give them reason to intercept.

What FourSeven said. 1JZVL, they can't simply sidestep the encryption. It'd take them forever to decrypt the stream, a lot more processing power than they'd have, and in a lot of cases, my SSL connections only last about 30 mins as it is, not even CLOSE to enough time. They'd essentially have to hack my SSL connection (which is illegal without a warrant) and they wouldn't have enough time to do it anyway.

Say they do issue a warrant. Are they supposed to let you know? Or can they just snoop in without your knowledge?

I hope it's the former, then you can just stop all p2p traffic immediately lol

4chan will get me locked up one day I'm sure of it. Total degenerates the lot of them...great reading when I have spare time...

SSL is used everywhere, everyday by businesses, VPN traffic, exchange email, banking stuff.
Basically stops people from poking around inside the data between 2 points (e.g. you and a server)

Paid. I got it initially to get around my ISPs crippling of torrents.
Have found a number of other good uses for it since.
