I bet y'all thought you were going to see a Porsche or something huh?

Fuck no.. I'm not that baller.

Bought this today. Brand new.. the guy from Mandurah Holden even drove it up to North Perth for us to have a look, thats how keen they were to sell. Cost us fark all brand new, and after we depreciate it through the business and make all relevant deductions, we're talking a car that costs less than $10k brand new at the end of its useful life.

Mods? NFI yet.. maybe some mud flaps and bluetooth.

Slam it, fit some wheels with decent offset, tint it, and colour code some plastics. These kind of cars look dope when done right.

What a beast.. uses no fuel, its comfortable and best of all, brand new.

Have already organised mods.

Vauxhall Corsa OEM rubber mats - eBay, half the price of the Holden ones.

http://www.vauxhall-accessories.com/images/big/vx93179596.jpg

Vauxhall OEM sunglasses holder - Holden wanted $60 for this, I paid 1/3 from eBay. Clips into the blanking holes for the grab handle which isn't fitted to the Combo.

http://www.corsasport.co.uk/carimages/8977/sunglasses.jpg

Uses fuck all fuel, 230km on 1/4 of a tank. Brilliant!

Wonder if they would fit a quad in the back

The load area is 1348mm wide (1107 at the arches), 1787mm long and 913mm high. A quad bike may fit length and width wise, but most are over 1000mm high.

Because fucking RACE VAN. A bit of a joke at the Antilag Time Attack turned into me strapping on a transponder, removing the hubcaps and taking the ol' Combo out on the track!

2 of my flying laps were hampered with me having to yield to faster cars, but the 3rd one was uninterrupted and I managed to squeeze out a 77 second short track. Hit 130km/h at the end of the main straight! Lots of left foot braking kept the understeer at bay. The esses were FUN, I just held it pinned all the way through and hoped for the best. I reckon it had a lot more in it, but thats for another time of course :)

So if and when I sell the dak (I have 2 potential buyers on the go currently, fingers crossed one of them comes through!), I'm going to drop roughly $1000 (give or take somewhat) into the Combo. Just to make it a little cooler to drive daily.

1. JVC AVX-77.. Jme has one sitting there waiting for me, I just need to stop procrastinating and grab it :D I'm going to thoroughly enjoy the bluetooth, ipod adaptability and the reverse camera. I need to use a replacement DIN fascia and ISO adaptor loom to plug-and-play it, but I'll sort this out when the time comes. Couple of hundred bucks and its done.

http://reviews.cnet.com/sc/33576581-2-440-BK-4.gif

2. Lowering... not fuckin slammed, but if I knock around 80mm out of it (keeping in mind its a commercial), with heavy duty rear springs to maintain load capacity somewhat, it'll look something like this. It should only cost me about $250 for the springs.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g232/djdommyp/2252f4ad.jpg

3. Tints.. its only natural that I do this. Should set me back about $250 at the most.

4. Rims. I'll only have around $300 to spend, but I can stretch it slightly if need be (no pun intended). If I use 15" rims, I can use my original Pirelli tyres that came on the car. For my budget, a set of ghetto spec 15" rims off another car that isn't a Combo will suit. I saw one not long ago with a set of Alfa rims on it, looked pimp (Autodelta own it). If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears :D They're gonna be painted black regardless.

Zender turbo..

http://www.wagenwheels.co.uk/car_images/stock102a.jpg

The above ones aren't FWD offset as such, but looking at the guards on my van, they could probably swallow something with at least 2cm lower offset than what I have now, due to the guards being plastic.

Not keen on that.. the style I'm chasing is the flat face type. Heaps of OEM wheels are like that, best example is the VW P Slot wheels.

Thats my best chance of getting rims within my budget, rims such as those Zenders and Ronals are big bucks even in 15x7 size.

OZ wheels look interesting, going to look more into those :)

So those Zender Turbos above.. I'm picking them up tomorrow :D

Went around and tried them on.. this is how they look.. keeping in mind that I will be repainting them SILVER, and they will have centre caps fitted.. plus the tyres on them are 205/50s, I will be fitting some 185/60s instead.. so the tyre will not bulge out like in the pics below.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/balistc/Combo%20Van/IMG_20111110_130935.jpg

They poke HARD, but with lowering and camber, and the narrower tyres stretched on it'll be sweet :)

Oh it will be once its lowered :D

Stock springs out of the same shape Barina will drop the rear 65mm.. if I put some SRi springs in it, it'll go 80mm in the rear.

Fronts, I'll have to use whatever Barina owners use to lower theirs because the struts are the same.. probably some Kings Super Lows.

So I paid Lachlan (Mr Scorpio) a visit at WA Suspensions yesterday. On the cards is:

- Kings Lows in the front to suit XC Barina (same strut)... 30'ish mm drop
- Stock Barina XC springs in the rear.. will drop the Combo approx. 60mm.
- 12mm camber bolts all round

I will install these myself (probably hire out M'Mates Place for a couple of hours I'd say), and then get the alignment done professionally.

The front may not seem low on paper, but a measured 40mm drop would see the guard sitting right on the tyre tread.. its already fairly low in the front and jacked up in the rear as standard! With those bits on the car, it will sit low and level front to back.

Also picked up the rims today.. massive thanks to Brennan (Lamy) for the awesomely ridiculous cheap price on them, an unrestored set goes for anywhere up to $1500 and double that for a brand new set with all hardware. They are a rare and valuable rim!

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/balistc/Combo%20Van/IMG_20111111_120421.jpg

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/balistc/Combo%20Van/IMG_20111111_121426.jpg

... and dropped them off to my mate Peppe at Swan Tyres. For a ridiculously awesome mates rates price, I am getting the rims:

- Old tyres stripped off
- Blasted
- Kerb rash and any other rim damage welded and/or machined where required
- Painted in bright silver (fairly standard silver rim colour, very close to the pic posted above) 2 pack and clear coated, inside and out including the aluminium centre caps
- Tyres fitted and balanced
- New wheel nuts fitted that won't damage the stud holes in the rims.

There really isn't much else I can do to this car without WASTING money, so this will be the extent of it beyond a new head unit and some tints.

Stay tuned, I will post pics as I get them :D

They do look tough without caps, but they look "finished" with the caps fitted.

The centre caps make up the entire value of the rims as I found out, without the caps they're worthless, and you can't buy them new anymore.. so they're rare as fk.

Keen2stealmotor :D

So the rims are off to Alliance prior to paint, to get perfectly straightened.. a couple of them are a bit wobbly, which I'm told is not unusual for 25 year old rims. Most people wouldn't bother doing this step, but I certainly will be. No cracks though which is great, and all kerb damage has been repaired already :)

I'm told that a 2 stage process where paint is applied over a powdercoat can be done to ensure a glass smooth wheel finish, which is very important on this style of wheel.. just awaiting some more info back on this before committing though.

This doesnt make sence, they are saying get the wheels powdercoated then rubbed back and painted in 2pac to fill any minor imperfections?

Would achieve same results just spraying wheels in a 2pac high fill primer sanding them smooth then painting in 2pac and whacking a few extra coats of clear over them. IMO spraying 2pac over the powdercoat means you are building on an already very thick paint layer which would result in rounding of edges and loosing some of the finer detail.

I'm actually now re-thinking this whole silver thing and reconsidering black (can hear TJ cheering from here).. its easier, cheaper, will also match my black trim, and black tints when I get them, and it will be easier to keep clean!

Thanks to Tocchi, I've got a colour chart and Dulux Night Sky satin or matte black powdercoat is looking pretty good.

Does anyone have pictures of any items powdercoated in either of those two colours, so I can get an idea of what they look like? Cheers :D

Gotta admit I'm with skinkis & your original thoughts on the colour, though... Especially on a car like the Combo where a lot of people have lost the stock hubcaps, they will look like steelies to the average Joe... (geddit?!)
+1 for polished body cladding, too! Seems to be the common theme for all of these pimped up vans (along with lowering & some nice rims, but you've got that sorted already ;) ), and I rate that's what will 'make' the car...
Regardless, I'm sure it'll turn out well, though, and I look forward to seeing the progress :)

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g232/djdommyp/2252f4ad.jpg

There is a pearlescent silver powdercoat available too which looks very much like anodizing.. might be a goer.

See, as much as I love black rims (my car also has them), I don't think it's quite right for this style of rim, or the car itself.

The one with Bentley rims is actually a VW Caddy.. that was my other choice when it came to a work vehicle, but was over $10k more than the Combo van!!! I'd prefer the business to keep the change and spend it on something else :P

Thanks for the opinions guys.. it hasn't helped me choose at all :D I have until Thursday to decide, because thats when they're getting done.

Tocchi has brought another colour to my attention, called Dulux Pandemonium Silver.. its a flat light silver pearlescent powdercoat, and apparently it gives an anodized look. It might be a worthy option... it means I revert back to the original plan of silver, but putting a different spin on that by having the pearlescent finish. It also makes the rims look bigger as Tocchi pointed out :D

I'm yet to see a set of rims in that colour but it might be worth giving it a crack.. if I don't like it, I can always re-blast and re-powdercoat another colour I suppose, its not that pricey to do!

Needs less Mandurah plates ASAP!

This. Surprised you haven't been egged yet!

Easier just to fit a Barina bumper..

I am reluctant, because after all, I still need to use it for work... It's gonna run into shit at some point I'm sure, so black plastic is more suitable

Haha how do you work that out? I use my ute for work too, I don't drive into stuff.. Just don't use it as a bumper car.

That colour makes them look like hubcaps.

Needs something to liven them up. Stickers perhaps.

In other news - its going to be your only car. Stop pretending like you're going to leave it alone and just bomb the thing already.

Springs are incoming... 30mm drop in the front, 60mm in the rear. I'll grab these next week and will fit them asap :D

LOL @ grab springs "next week".. they're still sitting at WA Suspensions almost 3 months later.

I'll attempt to collect them during my 2 weeks annual leave (starting this week) and will get them installed.. I'm tired of staring at the combo in its current lift kit state!

So to my next question.. does anyone know where I can get some white walls, and how much? I'm thinking of those "flappers" which go between the rim and tyre.

Try http://www.antiquetyreswa.com/

Otherwise just eBay or even the rubberized paint from a hardware store

mr_mike
28-02-2012, 07:55 PM
flappers can cause alot of dramma joe cos they slip in between the bead of the tyre and the rim. Have heard alot of stories of the white ring slipping out from between the two.
Have also seen pics of tyres where the white ring rubs on the sidewall of the tyre as it buldges at the bottom of the wheels rotation and it actually rubs thru the sidewall.

A mate had a groove cut in his 17's and filled with paint to give white walls the old style. Think it cost about $110 a wheel.

Joe, I think you need to upgrade your delivery van....

http://www.gtspirit.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Geneva-2012-MTM-T-500-25-TFSI-4motion.jpg

A remarkable car was unveiled at the stand of MTM. The German tuner presented the MTM T 500 2.5 TFSI 4motion ‒ based on a Volkswagen T5 ‒ at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. This powerful edition of the VW Transporter is patriotically colored in reference to the upcoming European Football Championship.
MTM have fitted the 2.5 straight-five TFSI engine as found in the Audi TT RS and RS3 into the engine bay of the Volkswagen. The engine as been upgraded to boost an impressive 472 horsepower and a maximum torque of 625Nm.

Power is transferred to all four wheels via a modified transmission. These tweaks enables the light commercial vehicle or peoples-carrier to hit a top speed of 280km/h, making the VW an ideal van for those in a hurry.
The suspension has been upgraded as well, just like the brakes. For stopping power the MTM T 500 relies on large disc brakes, firmly gripped by two six-piston fixed callipers at the front axle. To complete the overhaul, the VW has been equipped with 9×20 inch MTM Bimoto rims wrapped in 275/35 ZR20 Michelin SuperSport tyres.

Blatantly stolen from HERE (http://www.gtspirit.com/2012/03/07/geneva-2012-mtm-t-500-2-5-tfsi-4motion/)

Got rear springs too now.. Astra G standard height springs (Thanks Steve @ Autopro!).

So on the weekend, after 2 failed attempts at lowering (thought I didn't have the right tools to do it, but I actually did), I finally did it.

Rear:

Very simple.. jack up car, remove wheels, undo top shock bolts, undo brake line brackets, axle drops to the ground and spring falls out. Put new spring in, reverse procedure.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/balistc/Combo%20lowering/IMAG0516.jpg

Front:

Jack up car, remove wheels, undo top nut on strut, remove 2 bottom bolts, remove swaybar link bolt (link is attached directly to the strut)... the strut drops out. Undo top hat on stock strut (no spring compressors required as there is hardly any tension on the springs when the strut is out), remove old spring, put new one in, and reverse the procedure.. EASY!

DONE.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/balistc/Combo%20lowering/IMAG0528.jpg

It's hard to see, because the plastic wheel arch mouldings blend in with the tyres, but its fairly low.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/balistc/Combo%20lowering/IMAG0536.jpg

Since these photos were taken, the front and rear have both settled a fair bit more, especially the rear... I carried 350kg of crap in the rear today and the tyres scrubbed on the plastic wheelarch mouldings over large bumps.. time for either some camber shims, some narrower tyres, or maybe I'll just cut a sliver of plastic out of each of the mouldings to clear the tyres.

Apart from some camber, that'll do for mods.. just wanted it to look a little nicer and different to a normal small delivery van. If anything else is to be done, its windscreen tint, reverse cam and some sort of CD player upgrade.. but otherwise, finished.

I'm putting $50 on this statement changing in a month.

Cha ching!.. the Combo is being put out to pasture :D

It's not being retired as such, rather, passed on to a staff member to be used to replace our rusty old Ford Transit company van he was driving. As a result, springs will be coming out and stock rims going back on.

What am I using to replace it? Well... the criteria was

- It has to be a van
- It has to be under $25k (which rules out big vans)
- It has to fit a standard pallet in between the wheel arches
- It had to be diesel (because our pallets sometimes weigh 5-600kg)

So the vans that I considered and test drove:

Holden Combo
- Doesn't fit a standard pallet
- Petrol
- No longer being made.. 2012 is the last year, and the 2013 is minimum 9 months away should Holden or Opel actually decide to bring it in to begin with.

Mercedes Citan
- Still a while off (based on the new Fiat Doblo / Opel Combo), will not come in under budget.

Renault Kangoo
- Looks a bit naff
- Only one dealer, so the price blew out above the budget i.e. no campaign or special pricing was extended

Peugeot Partner
- Pricey

VW Caddy
- Apparently would fit a standard pallet
- Good reputation
- Diesel
- Under $25k (there was one for $23,990 drive away available)

Citroen Berlingo
- Identical to Peugeot except for the badges, cost less than the Peugeot.
- Under $25k due to campaign price, and thats for the long wheelbase!!
- Fits a pallet
- Diesel

So I went and test drove a demo Peugeot, hoping it would be under budget. Loved it! Drove like a car, had a strong little turbo diesel in it (although only 215nm, it comes on very early and strongly), and just felt good to be in. Long wheel base fits 2 Australian pallets with 5cm to spare. Had a few options on it, but Peugeot couldn't get it anywhere near my budget. Walked away.

Test drove the Caddy. Has a great reputation, but wasn't anything like the one that Karl had on review last year.. his was optioned up. This one for $23,990 was a 2011 build MY12 model. It had vinyl floor, vinyl seats, no cargo barrier, no rear cargo area mat, etc. Drove it, and it was laggy (as was the throttle, was not as responsive as I'd hoped) and certainly didn't feel like 35nm more than the Peugeot. Felt cheap inside with lots of hard plastics and vinyl everywhere, not even close to my Combo van in regards to how the cabin felt. VERY disappointed. Carpet, mats, cargo barrier, etc, were expensive options. After I was told that it would fit a pallet, we then looked at the specs and worked out it was 25mm too narrow to fit a 1200mm pallet in it.. then I was told it would comfortably fit a Euro pallet. Pass.

So I went to Citroen and looked at the Berlingo. Long wheelbase, same van as the Peugeot with different badges. Although it had less airbags and no ESC compared to the Caddy (a factory option that would take 4-5 months to get here), that was the extent of the shortfalls compared to the Caddy. It felt nice, just like the Peugeot. Has optional reverse sensors, cargo mat, floor mats, extenso seat (3 seater with flip up seats to increase load capacity to 4.1m3), will take pallets, has bluetooth and USB/aux in, the strong turbo diesel exactly the same as the Peugeot, has cruise control and speed limiter, cargo barrier behind the drivers seat, and much more.

And the price? Under budget, PLUS the salesman was happy to do me a further deal (thanks Jarrod!!). Signed contract, done!!!

My Berlingo is 2 weeks away in Melbourne, as the one below that the dealer had on the lot, didn't have reverse sensors. Very stoked, and being a Citroen, there is no way I can actually mod it because good luck finding springs and rims for it.. which suits me fine because I want to keep it stock this time!

So basically, if anyone wants some Zender Turbo rims to fit their E30 BMW, VW Golf Mk1 or anything else with a similar stud pattern, drop me a PM :D

Great idea.. So when I bump the work van into a bollard or wall, it scratches the paint.

Grey bumpers wear a lot better than painted bumpers.

You will probably bump into things more with grey bumpers, because you will have poked your eyes out to avoid the ugly.
