Hi All,

Im going to back to Europe on Christmas day for a month, each time i go to Europe i go to a country with a completley different culture and history to Germany and Austria which ive based myself out of for the last 2 times ive been

I went to Ukraine and Chernobyl last August, some may remember my thread of photos on here. And Janurary just gone i went to Moscow.

I did Russia solo, and i was honestly pooping my pants having to navigate the Moscow subway systems counting stations in all sorts of directions.... occasionally walking down onto the wrong line and the wrong way.

So, im trying to find the next wierd and wonderfull place to visit. I have no desire to visit the popular destinations, i like going outside the norm - hence Bosnia/Serbia/Kosovo.

Has anyone traveled there before? And if so has anyone got family/friends or someone english speaking that i could pay as a 'tour guide'/host? I realise i might be cutting it fine for this winter, but maybe for a summer adventure?

Cheers

Great Serb pickup lines:

Mamlaj ga! - You're beautiful!

Prdnes mi oko kurca - Would you like to get a coffee?

They served me well, Serbia is an awesome country and the women are great.

Fuck all the inland shit. Head to Croatia on the coast and enjoy the view.

Might as well keep going north and go to Slovenia, it's the cleanest and best looked after of all the former jugoslav states. It has more castles than any where on Earth and the medieval villages are so prestine they look like they were built last year, some of the popular tourist spots include Lake Bled (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Bled), Postojnska jama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postojna_cave) and Triglav (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triglav_National_Park) plus countless other fairytale like locales. On top of that Slovenes are friendly as fuck so you have less chance of getting stabbed or shot.

Business is currently booming, but if we really dont like you we will dress you up as a 12 year old boy and put you on a boat to Greece... Your lucky if you end up with the Albanians.

Bosna is good, as good as a war-ravaged country can be. if your going, stick to the big cities, Sarajevo, Mostar, Tuzla is now officially a "tourist destination" cause of the salt lake. Sarajevo is full of gypsys and gansters if you are unlucky, they offer to sell you bricks, and if you dont buy it, you get mobbed and robbed.

however, everything is cheap, the people are friendly, and most of the younger generation speak english, some speak it very very well.

Croatia, cant really comment on, apart fromt he coast, Makarska, Baska Voda etc. accom, dont pay anything more than 15 Euros MAX a night, you can find stuff for 10ish, the accom is meager, and simplistic, but its cheap, and who gives a fuck, nightlife is insane, you can kill your liver quite quickly.

Serbia i cant comment on, havent been since i was bulk little and i dont remember.

Balkans, hot women, unstable political/religious environment, bosna is cheap, but touristy places in croatia and serbia can cost you a bit, still cheap compared to aus, but double the price of the non-touristy joints.

Hey hey greeks were okay until they racked up a little debt.

I just spent 6 weeks in Greece, if you're looking to go further south.
Not as dodgy as the balkan neighbours though, from what i understand dodgy/out there places is where you want.

If you do go, visit the island of Rhodes, essentially the Bali of Europe without the downsides of real Bali (you can actually drink the water).
Popular destination for people from Sweden, Norway and Finland AND the hot chicks from those countries.

The Summer months are your best bet June,July & August. I was there mid July and the bar street (as its called by tourists) was packed, every night.
In the capital cities of Athens and Thessaloniki, i believe there'd always be something to do, however i haven't experienced it myself.

In regards to the above, thats my desire to go. I wish to see the aftermath of the conflict. Im not a great lover of castles and pretty gardens. I am a fan of understanding and appreciating the way of life that Bosnians/Serbs had. When i went to Kiev i went out into the suburbs on the 'not so great' side of the river and went to a school there, saw how they lived and how Chernobyl affected them. I had conversations with people that worked in random book shops that have most likley never met a Australian before. In Russia, seeing Lenin's body was one thing - But talking to russians about the soviet union and how it worked for them, and why they treat Lenin like a god, actually talking to people on the ground is very different to reading about it in a book.

Thats what i go to see.

More info?

7 days a week partying, till 6am everyday
Scandinavians or normally there for 1 - 2 week packages, so cheap for them.
Hotels are close, walking distance.
The clubs are owned by/catered towards scandinavians with a lot of scandinavians working there.
Drink prices aren't too bad, eg 2 shots for 3 euro deals, i think.
The Friday night 30Euro cover charge/Free alco 9-12 is crazy.
The 2 biggest/most popular clubs there:

If thats the reason you want to go, you'll love it. It's a very laid back country, you'll start to wonder if anyone actually works, all the bars and cafes are usually pretty full most evenings. You'll get a lot out of stories, especially from the post war generation as long as you aren't too pushy. English is more and more common over there so you won't have too much trouble on that front.

If you venture a little bit out of the cities you'll get both amazing scenery and stories, though you might struggle more with the language barrier. The people are very welcoming.
