View Full Version : When did iiNet turn to shit?

I've just got off the phone to iiNet after some curry aficionado told me they can't help me at all. Long story short, currently I am on iiNet's Home 3 plan. It's like $120 a month for 400 gig (200 on/off peak) and some phone calls. Optus, who the whole family is with for mobiles, has popped up offering $99 a month for 500 gig with no on/off peak times, and free calls to any Optus phone. This seems like an alright deal, although I am wary of going with Optus for their net as their customer service is shit and for the most part so are their products.
Thing is this woman at iiNet said she can't do anything for me along the lines of offering some sort of discounted rate or extra downloads and shit. We've been with them for something like 12 or 13 years and she said that's great but means nothing, they can only offer us what plans they have. She even said the Optus one sounds great, but thinks theirs are pretty alright anyway. They don't even have a retention department that tries to hold you as a customer, or at least there was no one she could put me through to.
Is iiNet worth the extra a month? Whats Optus net like these days? I know it used to be shit, but things change it would seem..

Why would they, they are #2

You will get the same response from other ISPs too

Optus are terrible, wouldn't even consider it if they're still using their ULL.

Stay with iiNet to be honest. Unfortunately though, it's not possible to get discounted plans and they don't have the rewards system anymore (I believe they used to have it, could be wrong).

Only time you'll have issues with iiNet customer service is when some guy from Cape Town answers your call. Subiaco, Sydney & Auckland do alright.

Wouldn't recommend optus to my worst enemy.

Have family members that got sucked into their attractive deals and guess what, its just like mobile service you get what you pay for.

Try trouble shooting your broadband connection with someone from manilla and then tell me it was worth ssaving a few bucks.

TPG. Unlimited for $59.

If you aren't a retard and half know your way around the settings in your router and windows you cant beat TPG prices.

I have my doubts about TPG's unlimited plan. My mate got a call from them once asking him to stop downloading so much.

It used to be different though. I remember being called and offered a free router just for being with iiNet for such a long time. When did it change to if you don't like it, fuck off?

Every pingpingpingping wants something free these days. Should be happy that you have a reliable service and don't have to speak to some somali/paki/indian every time you call the fucking helpdesk.

If you've been offered it before, why not? I didn't take the router as I'd just got a new one, no need for it. Why get rid of the department that tries to keep customers happy, though? Telco's are all about making deals and trying to make you feel valued, not telling you you aren't. Or at least that used to be the case. Maybe I'm just use to bartering with Optus as every time I sook and kick up a stink at my phone being a piece of shit after 12 months they chuck me a new one.

You can go with IInet naked - no line rental for a cheaper price and still have 400gig quota which is what Im on now but still pay the old (cheaper) plan they upgraded the downloads.

Most unlimited plans are categorised as 'fair use'. 'Fair' is a subjective term and open to interpretation.

Unless you use your home phone. Do their naked plans include VoIP and a VoIP router? Probably also note that if you want to go on naked, it can take like 21 days or something to setup.

21 days is a pretty big stretch. It's usually about 5-10 working days which is their SLA.
As Elmo said, iinet aren't shit, and offer a superior service to almost anyone out there, and have managed to keep their servicedesk and everything else, local. Probably one of the ONLY major ISP's that have kept their services mainly local and haven't pussied out overseas just so as they can save a few bucks.

Used to hate bigpond

But been with them in Collie for 3~ years now due to being only fuckers to offer adsl2 here

Have not had 1 issue with them and i download around 1.5mbps from torrents

$69 for 200gb anytime

Can't wait for them to allow the new 500gb plans as a bundle!

Tom
02-09-2011, 03:09 PM
5-10 working days is for residential ADSL. I wasn't aware they had an SLA for residential plans either.

Unsure if it's still current however that's what it was last time I connected a service with them which was last year. I myself have been with iinet since they took over Wantree internet, so 98/99

Tom
02-09-2011, 03:39 PM
Yeah, it was probably ADSL - which is 5-10 working days.

Naked is different, pulled this off their website:

It takes between 10 and 20 working days to get connected

I love iinet...............................I just don't like being 100km from a fucking exchange!
(slight exaggeration).

Telstra/Optus, meh.

I guess it depends what you use your net for..but having said this, I reckon they should discount you a little bit since you've been quite loyal ;)

One problem with iinet atm is the download limit options, they suck. I'm currently on 100gb/100gb (I think?), which I get no where near! I wish they had a 50gb/50gb and the next lowest is too little. Need more options :(

What's wrong with TPG? Been with them for three years in two cities and have been excellent. Fast, $59 a month for unlimited and I don't think I've ever had a drop out.

I have 150gb with Optus at $63 a month, no drama, no connection issues... though their customer service is a massive pain in the arse, can't understand a word half the time and they don't know what the fuck is going on.

I am hoping to switch to elsewhere to get a static IP as Optus has NFI what I am asking for.

I think TPG comes with Static IP's on all their plans. iiNet/Westnet residential plans do not.

I reluctantly switched to TPG from iinet recently (on advice from forum members). Can't fault it, no drop outs and as far as I can see there is no plan in Oz that gives you unlimited and unthrottled bandwidth day in..day out for such a cheap price. People just have to realise that dealing with India is a reality which is no longer avoidable.

Good luck with Optus. Will see you back on the iiNetwork in 6-12 months :p

Only time you'll have issues with iiNet customer service is when some guy from Cape Town answers your call. Subiaco, Sydney & Auckland do alright.

Cape Town have the same skills and access as Subi, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland so I'm not sure why you've found it a problem.

My biggest gripe with iiNet is the escalation procedure. If there isn't a task or fault number in the system there's no way in hell it's going to the NOC for investigation. Good example is the new Antilag VPS... technically the service doesn't offer 24/7 support unlike iiNet's internet and phone service, and when the hosting cluster we are sitting on fell over a week after we migrated everything over I had to keep pushing the CSR to search through 1000s of fault numbers in their system before she could escalate to the on-call engineer at 2am in the morning.

Rant time

Cant be as bad as telstra. Went to change to them in the last 2 weeks due to being able to offer adsl2. (iinet only gives me naked)
22/08 sign up all should be good.
23/08 online tracking shows that they are trying to connect my neighbour
24/08 I advise them of this
25/08 still shows next door neighbour, ring them and they say yes no worries (in qld too) and they know it needs changing.
29/08 still showing neighbour, go into telstra shop and got copy of service request (original and amended) both show correct address.
01/09 Ring them again, advised that due to it being a bundle call and they have gone home already i would need to call back in the morning, would not take details and get them to call me.
02/09 Advised that they have a conflict on my address! by this stage im already pissed off and get a bit angry with the indian translator. Advised that they would need to cancel my service request and redo another 1, but could not escalate the time due to "it not being there fault". I promptly advised him to shove it up his arse and dont worry about connection.

So now back to square 1.

yes i know tldr

Cancel plan with iiNet, resign with the deals they have on their website.

$69 for 400GB or $99 for 1TB.

I called them up last year complaining our old Legacy plan was a rip off, so they changed it and we ended up paying $20 a month less for more quota and on to ADSL2+.

Should be able to just change the plan in the user settings from memory, but is there a downgrade fee if its cheaper?

We are on the $69 a month for 400 gig, but when bundled with phone it comes to $120. That's including a handful of calls, line rental, caller id, shit like that. No longer considering going elsewhere after reading a bunch of shit about Optus customer service. Still would be nice if loyalty meant something like it used to, but fuck it, games play better with them so that's worth the extra I guess. Also Optus are filtering their net, so I'd either get arrested or annoyed, or both.

They charge you like $29.00 to downgrade your download limit,

what the fuck?

I'm not so fussed about their pricing or lack of customer loyalty - but I appreciate their local support (during business hours).

Having said that, I have found the support to be pretty shit lately (including Westnet). Logged a line fault for a client, was attended to within 24hours. Gave it a few days, never got a call back. Called them and after being put over to several other staff, was told the job was closed and it was an internal cabling fault. Thanks for notifying me guys!

Also have another thing pending with Westnet. Need some ports opened up on a SHDSL modem for a client (modems are locked down by the ISP). Supposedly contracted out to AAPT. Simple request - has taken them 2 weeks so far.

Haven't had any issues with iinet, been with them for good 4 or 5 years now. Occasionally I get a drop out, but that was my router's fault. THe couple of times I had to call tech support to configure the router, I spoke to an aussie with a clue.

Don't get any freebies, but once or twice a year, they keep upping the quota limit at no extra costs, which is great.

I've never had a problem with iinet, and if we did it was sorted out. I'm no leet gamer and download speed is fine forr me, I don't complain when the things you download are free.
