Hi everyone,
I am Shane, Some of you know me but most of you don't. I have had many fast cars in the past but then i got sick of losing my license and getting in to trouble so i sold up and got into 4x4's instead. I still have my Hilux but i needed something track-able. So i sold up the starion i had previously (Very fast but not exactly track friendly) and bought this S13 that you have probably seen in the for sale section of a few of the other forums. I was looking for a 180sx but as we all know these are pretty much same same so i just went with it.

When i got the car is was pretty terrible interior wise and had the dash with more cracks than i knew what to do with. So since the seller was a friend of mine he hooked me up with a replacement dash and carpet and a much less homosexual set of wheels. I was also able to fix the mirrors, fan, dash wiring, high beam, indicators and whatever else that had gone wrong that i hadn't found yet with parts i got from the forums so thanks everyone for their help.

Then i got the extra set of wheels fitted with a new set of tyres and it turns out they were 17x8 and 17x7s but i just chucked the same size all the way around anyway. Its not hellaflush with loads of sick stretch and all that jazz but I'm not keen on getting stickers every 5 minutes.

So thats about as far as i got for visual stuff. I plan to get a set of coilovers in the very near future so it will be a bit lower but the exhaust hangs down like no bodys business so that will have to get fixed up first. Can anyone recommend a good exhaust shop that will do what i ask them to do and no screw me around?

OK now for performance stuff.
Its basically a ca18de silvia that's been fitted with a s14 vct sr20det. Not sure if its s13 5 speed or s14 but the box is really good and the diff has been swapped for a mechanical just before i got it.
I'm told this engine has been rebuilt with some forged pistons and new bearings and that sort of stuff and i haven't looked to check it all out. I plan to buy a sump extension so i will find out then. No receipts or anything like that but it goes strong doesn't breathe heavy and sounds alright to me. I know many ppl hate the sound of an SR with a passion but I'm a fan. I dont plan on pushing it that hard as im trying to do this without dropping a buttload of money on it. It has a gt2860 which should get me to around 300rwhp mark and i will be happy with that. Also has a microtech lt8 so all i need to do is drop is some 555cc injectors and i will be set.
Not sure if i will stick in some cams or not. Plenty of other stuff i would like to do before i do that. Its got a shitty china exhaust manifold which i plan to replace with either a stock one or a 6 boost one that a friend of mine has and isnt using anymore but it will depend on the price we can agree upon. Other than that its got a full exhaust system (even if it does hang really low) and a fmic thats tucked neatly where the aircon used to sit.

If you're running a 28 you may need cams to get over the 300hp mark without a stupid amount of boost.
Pretty neat 13 (as 13's go!). I'd deffs be getting R32GTR/R33/300ZX (all pretty much similar) brakes if you're going to track it, coilovers, good tyres, FMIC, fuel pump (if it hasn't got one already), and a bigger radiator.

Holy fuck, how big is your intercooler piping? I can imagine there's a bit of response being lost in those pipes.
Time to upgrade to a GT35 to suit the piping. :P

Sorry my description is pretty brief there's actually lots more I have to add in but its a bit of a shit time at our house atm so I'm doing this to get my mind off it all. The pictures actually make it look way better than it really is TBH its a bit of a shitbox but hey that's why I wanted it.
I don't have my heart set on 300rwhp so as long as it gets close I'm happy. Its already got a big pump I'm not sure what it is but its loud even with a full tank so I'm guessing 044 or something along those lines. I have to figure out why my fuel gauge is out of whack so ill find out then. Its got 33 gtst brakes on the front so ill use those for starters and see how it goes. I don't want to spend the cash to go 5 stud if i don't have to. HSD Coilovers have been ordered and we're just waiting for delivery. Its got a FMIC but because it sits just in front of the radiator you just cant see it in those pics. I've got a half cage I'm putting in and hope to get it permitted before I do any other work.
HSD's are leaving Otomoto this arvo, so they'll be here in no time :D
this was my car i bought 9 odd years ago did the sr conversion after 2 years kept it for another 2 havent seen it for 5 years !
if same engine I put in we put in some sort of forged piston and ring set (cant remember what) when did the conversion and if same fuel pump will be a walbro intank
china spec mani was put on when i had it so been going for 7 years or so, lol, if it aint broke dont fix it I recon

Sweet man, Banger told me you got in touch with him when he was selling and said the same thing. Any other interesting info? Did it have a huge stereo? When we stripped the interior to swap the carpet and dash i pulled out a heap of stereo cables and stuff and i wasn't sure if it was any good or not. Also do you know what the go was with the engine number? I changed it all over yesterday so its not a big problem but seems strange having rb xxx instead of sr xxx
True about the manifold 7 years?? I didn't realise it had worked for so long with no problems. Maybe ill buy the other one and just leave it in the shed for the day this one breaks.

Needs more ls1......
Not much more info. Had profec b electronic boost controller in it. That mono steering wheel is genuine. When I had it put in koni shocks n lovell springs dunno what it has now.
Yeah had big stereo couple of subs 2 amps etc etc. Will have metal headgasket too I think as c red put it in as the chump who bought it off me boosted the shit out of it and blew the headgasket and knocked on my door 2 hours later saying it was broken, all was found to be ok just replace gasket. Pretty quick car just needs a tidy up by the looks
MrSparkle

Boost controller is gone. I ordered another one (pretty sure its a profec b too) so that's kind of spooky!! That steering wheel in the picture is one i changed over yesterday the old one has been killed by the sun. Stereo stuff is long gone. If its lucky it will get the head unit and couple of speakers left over from the starion. Pretty sure those springs and shocks are the ones you put in because it actually handles really well. Good news about the head gasket ill get in there and have a good look to see what i can see.
Car goes pretty hard for low boost its running i think its about 11psi. But yeah needs a bit of a tidy up. Interior is done already have to see how i go with the outside.
Thanks for the info dude.
Tom , Maybe if it dies.

Bought some 555cc injectors and got a GTR style grill to go on once i get home from work.
The exhaust has been lifted up and even though it looks a bit funny now its really high but that's what i wanted.
So once i get my Hilux (its got a sore foot) back together ill be booking it in for a tune so interested to see how that goes.
I will keep everyone posted.
Chasing a normal s13 instrument cluster with all the gauges working and a mirror switch if anyone has one.

Bought myself a 5 stud conversion kit including nismo lca's (basically silver normal ones from what i can see) and set of 33 brakes to get me going down the right track once ive got the new injectors in and a tune done.
I'm due home from work monday so ill get stuck into it then. Ive got a brand new set of hsd's to go in, I bought a sticker sheet so i thought i might try to find something to stickerbomb as well.
I want to sticker bomb the gearshift surround cause ive seen some of the other guys do it on their build up threads and i thought it looked pretty sweet so i might do that and see if i like it.
Not sure if i should get the half cage in and try to get a permit for it or if i should just stick the whole lot in and wait for a sticker because either way its got to go over the pits.
Sorry for no pictures people im 1500km's away on a stupid minesite. Once i get back it will be pictures galore.

MrSparkle

Yeah i think that might be the go. The wait to see when the sticker arrives has started !!
Anyhoo Updates
I got home from work Monday so I've been trying to get some stuff done while I am back. It's hard to avoid all the rain but I've been trying anyway first off Monday night when i got back i decided to sticker bomb the gearshift surround plastic bit thing. (Not sure of its technical name) I'm not sure how i feel about it yet but its growing on me.

I also painted up my ebay spec grill and chucked it in. I know its probably not a big thing but i like the grill so much more than the big plastic "silvia" on the front.

The other thing was installing my set of HSD's They went in easy and i was even able to get rid of the dodgy washers around part of the mounts on my strut brace. They had spaced it up to get it to fit over the engine. All we did was bent the brace a bit more in the middle and adjust it some more and it fit!

Gotta stick with what you know i guess.
Its got a big FMIC its just that you cant see it so people presume it isn't there. I will get a picture of it so ppl stop suggesting i get one.
My brother is trying to convince me to get rid of the 4 pots and go back to stock SR brakes so that i can get a set of 15x8 ssr reverse meshies. I'm almost considering it TBH. Be nice to be old school.
Also car looks far better in those pictures than it looks in real life. Camera is just being nice to me i suppose.
Fully sick hecktic bro , Sick nuts!
Nice work Shane-O! ;)

Don't get rid of the four pots for aesthetics... You can find just as many neat oldschool rims that will go over them.

Yeah I think you are right. Plus who does a brake downgrade on a car that you want for track days and skid pans and such?? No-one thats who!
One thing I have serious doubts about is the mechanical diff in the rear. I seriously doubt there is a mechanical center in there so I'm going to investigate this some more tomorrow, if I have to pull it out I have to pull it out. Maybe it just has good gear oil in it? Needs monster skid to confirm !! I have done a massive 150km's since i got it and only a few of them involved any kind of serious pedal action because the car isn't tuned the greatest (stinks of unburnt fuel)
Tried to get a tune today for the new injectors but it seems everywhere I ask is booked out for Powercruise so I suppose its going to have to wait till I get back from work next time.

Well i got back from site Wednesday night so Thursday morning the Silvia copped a bit more modification.
First up were the alloy sub-frame bush inserts. These were very easy to install, Took me about an hour and i did it on the floor in the backyard. TBH i haven't noticed a hell of a lot of difference. I'm going to try stuffing with damper ratings on my shocks to see if i can get the car handling better. Not that its bad I'm just not that happy with it. Am i supposed to just tighten the shit out of these? I did these tight but they could go more if I thought it would be beneficial.

I also stuck in my profec B and a boost gauge my brother bought for his car and turned out to be the wrong size. Its a bit rough looking where i have installed it but at least it works. Interesting to note the car is running about 6 psi and then builds to about 11 so I'm expecting big changes once its tuned with the new injectors and EBC.

Good day today, Got the extended sump fitted and also changed the oil and filter.
While i was busy taking over my friends hoist and i had the sump off i managed to get the part number from the bottom of the pistons.
Turns out the engine is fitted with JE 87.0mm forged pistons that give it a compression ratio of 8.5 : 1
The rods are standard but its good insurance knowing that the engine has been rebuilt.
(P/N 245016 clearly visible underneath the piston) We tried to get a few pictures but its difficult to photograph.

TBH dude I just wanted a car I can race at track days and stuff. Sprints and Skid pans and days like they have out at Midvale. For fun mostly not expecting to be the fastest man alive or anything.
I hadn't really thought about trying to drift. A few of the guys at my work are into drifting in a big way so they will probably encourage me to try it at collie or something like that. For now I'm just trying to get it all sorted so its ready for some decent thrashing.
Looks like its got an s14 gearbox to match the s14 engine too.

Never have I seen a man so pleased with the discovery of forged pistons before! :)

For a rwd hack this will be a neat little car Shane :)
It looks like nice transformation from how it originally presented and it has a few quality mods too, plus some forged slugs! All it needs now is a good tune and you're laughing mate. Should see you close enough to 300 at the hubs with those mods..
Btw, how noisy are the JE's on cold start?
ZedEx
08-11-2011, 09:01 AM
They can't be too noisy if he didn't realize the engine was running forgies!
Sick find Shane :)
MrSparkle
08-11-2011, 04:27 PM
Hey Jengi I'm thinking 300 would be nice but i dont think ill crack it just yet unless we go to town with boost pressure. Noise wise its not very bad at all, I remember being told you were the man with the noisy sr, How long did the noise on start up last? I got noisy VCT for the first few sections well i thought it was that but after say 3 or 4 seconds running its gone.
Thanks Ant and when do we see the build up on this starion?
jengi
09-11-2011, 07:59 AM
Pretty keen to see this sometime Shane, looks really neat.
Ah yes, the rattly SR. Haha honestly, the noise was pretty much gone within 30 seconds or so once it warmed, so it wasn't that bad.
The one engine upgrade I would suggest down the track is to drop in some Tomei 256 cams and then you'll also lose the noisy VCT, it's win win :D

Jengi,
It might look neat but its a bit of a shitbox up close. It's got some well placed duct tape covering up the holes in the boot and around the sunroof.
From about 5 metres its looks fine though.
Looking forward to getting it tuned. Got some tyres to turn.

I was planning on painting them white but the paint on the car is pretty hammered i cant have a better paint job on my wheels that just wouldnt match so they will probably just go on there like they are now. I bought some purple wheel nuts not sure what they will be like but they will be going on too.
Car is booked in for tuning friday so all i have to do before then is install the injectors. Looking forward to the next update.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0323.jpg
The car went in to get tuned this morning. All was going well but the car would not make more than 16.3 psi of boost, No matter how much i screwed with the bleed valve it just would not make more. I decided that will have to do since we didn't know why and it seemed to be going fine like that anyway. The tuner finished up some of the cruise maps and had a bit of a dick about with some other map or something and then switched screen to do the power run.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0325.jpg
I am all excited hoping to break 300 but seriously doubting its ability to do so because we couldn't get more than 16 out of it which at the time was a big mystery to me. The car gets going,1st, 2nd, 3rd gear then into 4th settles down then on the gas and low and behold 375hp at the wheels!!! I'm trying to see if i read that right or what have i missed because obviously that isn't right.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0326.jpg
Turns out it wasn't, Whatever supplies the dyno with its resistive load wasn't doing its thing and it was making dyno ponies out of everything that went over about 200 hp. We should have known something was up because this burnout car before me that was preparing for Narrogin rev heads fitted with a 308 and VN heads and demon carby and some cam or something went 400+ and the wheels. Cool car but not exactly 400hp material!!
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0322.jpg
Anyway after we realised the dyno was cactus i packed up and went home, Car goes hard but not sure how much power it is making. I was talking to my brother once he got back from work and he said its probably my stocko bov stopping the car from boosting past 16. I felt so stupid of course that's what it is!! I decided that even though i wanted my boost its going to have to wait because i have a dome day tomorrow and i just want to race around there rather than change things. But we did want to use the EBC instead of bleed valve so after I installed my EBC again we went about setting it up.
We did many a run up a dark highway trying to get it right but it just didn't want to know about it. So me being me decided that it must be the bov leaking that was making the boost go up and down and the solenoid was just trying to keep up. So we got it home pulled it all apart hoping to block off the bov with this plate.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0328.jpg
But we ended up cutting/welding/fitting a supersonic one we had laying about and letting it vent to atmo. Like a boss. Anyway with that done it was time for another set of highway runs. It did exactly the same thing! I was not impressed.
Turns out that yours truly was unable to operate the EBC properly:P So i did what any man would do as a last resort, I read the instructions!! With the instructions read and the boost controller acting the way its supposed to i set low boost at 11 and high boost at 16. While one of these highway runs was happening in the hi setting i thought i heard it ping. I wasn't sure because this is an s13 and shit falls off them all the time but i got my bro to floor it again and this time i definitely heard it!! I presume because the dyno wasn't doing its "load thing" properly the tune for higher rpm/load is probably way out too and that's why but I was spewing yet again (i have been sick lately so there is an abundance of spew to be had) but with my spirits high and my determination to race this thing tomorrow i decided that i will have to live with it for tomorrows track day on 10psi.
More to come....

Few pics from the dome day on the weekend. Pretty boring i suppose but the car went hard and there was very close competition between my car my brothers mx5 and DrJ's mr2. I will try to find some more pics that have smoke blazing off the tyres because then i have fulfilled my burnout requirement for a showcase thread.
Few changes to be made,
-Rear brake pads need to be replaced. Not a huge drama because the 5 stud conversion is almost ready to go in.
-The car is too low, The front tyres started to get new grooves cut in them from the body work underneath. I will probably lift it up about 10mm all the way round.
-The castor rod bushes are shot, Most likely do these when i do the 5 stud.
-Car is far too wheelspin prone, Not sure what to do about this. Either new decent tyres or some adjustable arms to get the tyre more flat with the ground. Or both maybe? Was only running on 10psi boost as well. Its super torquey in the low revs which is awesome but it also means i do far too many corners sideways than i had planned. Dont get me wrong its great fun but im kind of going for best times not best angles.

-The car is too low.
Is that possible?

Don't raise it! Just roll the lips of your guards.
MrSparkle

Its not the guards that are chopping up the tyres, Its the bodywork underneath i think its part of the chassis. Ill get a picture of the tyre damage so you can see what i mean.

I was planning on updating this when I got back to work but they screwed up my flights so I got a few extra days at home.
This is the part of the car that was re-grooving my tyres for me.

So i did what any good s13 owner would do. I hit it with a really big hammer :P
It flattened it off nicely and after i wound it up a bit higher it didn't hit at all! Even when I launched the Silvia off the side of a mound at the latest dome day trying to be a drift king :P
Few pictures from the latest dome day.
Brothers car on the way there : (Full rolling shot photography and shizz) He is all happy because he just dished out some chop to the poor old Silvia.

I shared my car with my mate because we had a few free spots on the day and he wanted a go. He did really well there was almost no difference between our times. But he didn't even come close to launching it off anything unlike yours truly. The Silvia went great. It did twice as many laps as the other cars, it didn't miss a beat and it wasn't slow either.

This thing was pretty much unbeatable on our dome day except for some WRX race car. With the r comps on an open wheeled car all you do is get rocks thrown at you but it turns like nothing else. Plus now with the itb's, trumpets and filters its almost deafening induction noise too.
Today I was bored so I painted up my cam cover with left over spray cans we had in our shed. I thought I would be using different colours to everyone else since I just used whatever we had but now its done I swear I have seen similar colours before. So if I copied you I'm sorry I didn't mean to. If it makes you feel any better I'll most likely change it later because the paint job didn't turn out real flash.

I don't think its rubbing on the coilovers at all mate. I haven't seen signs of it anywhere yet.
Any idea where you saw it? I showed my brother and he said he has seen it somewhere too. LOL

I was going off of the springs on the coilovers. Looked like they were marked. Maybe just a reflection, as they seem pretty glossy?
I can't remember. Maybe just got it confused with a solid orange rocker cover.

Well I'm back home now and as you can see the 5 stud was done while I was away. Turns out the best thing to do if you want to get other people to modify your car is to leave all the bits you need smack bang in the middle of the shed. They get the shits with tripping over the parts all the time and with the car already in the air on stands and torn apart it's easier to finish the job than trip over it for 3 weeks. :) Thanks to my dad and my brother btw.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0451.jpg
So now the silvia has 33 gtst brakes all the way round and 33 gtr wheels. We stuck with my front calipers that were already fitted and used the rears that came with the 5 stud. So the front are red and the rear are gold. They will all most likely end up black or maybe red I'm not sure yet. Still got stocko master cylinder, I have a r33 one but I'm not sure if it will need it or not. It has s14 lca's and I'm not sure if these will need to be swapped back to s13 ones to get the front wheels inside the guards. I'm not 100% sure but i think having s14 lca's sticks the front wheels out further. I plan to try giving it some camber first and get the wheels straight since it still has awesome tow out. I ordered some adjustable castor rods and rear upper arms and these have been installed already.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0454.jpg
I picked up a set of splitfires from my mate Ben yesterday, Not because I was having problems with my standard ones the only real reason was that when I painted the cam cover and pulled mine out they had cracks in them the size of the grand canyon. (may or may not be the same size) So I figured I'll get these since they were cheap and fix this problem before it becomes a problem when its getting tuned or at a track day and there is no time to repair anything.

20-12-2011, 09:21 AM
Correct on the S14 LCA's. They give you more track. Just run a lil more camber. Toe out aids with turning in, so may be an idea not to eliminate all of it.
MrSparkle
26-12-2011, 10:01 PM
Got the car out for a tape measure/ level / protractor wheel alignment. With the tools I've got it looks like I've given it about 2-2.5 degrees neg on the front and maybe 1 degree on the rear. Not sure on how to measure the toe in and out but its got the slightest bit of toe out on the front. Front wheels hang out a little bit but its not so bad its less than 10mm. The rear is pretty much perfect. It can stay how it is for now till I get my proper tyres. I wasn't able to get R-comps for the front before Christmas so I just stuck on any old tyres for now.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0463.jpg
Car drives a million times better now and I've got the wheels sitting in the right spots and it doesn't even rub. There is no room between the wheels and the coilovers on the front but they don't rub so who cares. I was planning on upgrading swaybars but I think ill save it. Its pretty stiff now and I'm worried with bigger bars it will get worse and just slide.
Car doesn't like sitting for three weeks while I'm away and when I get back this is how I start it.

Runs really bad when it first starts up. Runs on 3 or maybe even two until it finally sorts it crap out and then runs fine. I'm thinking I have a leaky injector or maybe my dodgy coils are playing up. Need to figure out whats going on and report back, could even be low voltage from the battery?? I'll check it out in the next few days.

My dads car is a locost.
Basically the same as a berkin/westfield. Technically they are all lotus 7 replicas just that the kits are made by different companies. My dad belongs to the sports car builders club and they encourage people to build their own cars. That means that the guys don't start with a kit, they build everything which includes the chassis, the body panels, the suspension arms, brake lines, everything!! Otherwise you can just choose whichever kit you like and get started. My dads one has a 20v blacktop but a lot of builders use the sr20det!!
Some are rear engine and some guys are buildings cobras and gt40's and all sorts really. Check it out if you want more info http://wascb.org/ There is also a better picture of my dads car on the home page.

18-03-2012, 04:21 PM
The car running like shit was just the vacuum line coming off the microtech, so yes, I am an idiot! The wheels are hitting the coilovers on the hard corners so I think I needed to get some spacers made for the s14 knuckles > s13 coilover bolt situation. It didnt take me that long to get these in there once I got stuck into it and within two hours all the movement was gone. I ended up making spacers out of sheet metal and shaping them around the bolts. Couldnt have worked better and I was able to leave a huge gap between my wheel and the struts now. Then fix up the camber with the adjustment on the strut tops, Happy days!!
Car is tuned. Not sure what it made because we didnt have time to do a power run. Super busy day meant I was lucky to get in there at all. Running 16psi with my mods should be about 270-280hp at the wheels and it certainly boogies along now. The car was pinging at the high boost level on the old tune so I wasn't hearing things. It had too much timing and not enough fuel in the midrange section. I have asked for a safe tune with lots of midrange so it wont be making maximum possible horsepower.

Well not sure how the selling things are going with me wanting to sell it or not. So i have done what any good enthusiast would do and decided to spend more money on it that I'll never get back.
I have ordered some Poncams (256 11.5) and I think my turbo has done an oil seal so now I'm turbo shopping. 2871 or another 2860 is what I'm looking at.
My friend has offered me a gt25/30 cheap that's almost new so I'm wondering if anyone has used one on an SR and what kind of results I can expect? 300hp at about 18psi? similar response to disco spud? Can anyone help?
MrSparkle

Pulled off the exhaust manifold and turbo today. No pools of oil or excessive shaft play so it isn't my turbo. I was so sure it was my turbo that I went ahead and bought my friends 6boost manifold and turbo set up he had for his 1600. The manifold and exhaust housing have been heat coated and I got the lot for less than the cost of a normal gt28rs. I'm stoked with it all its "as new". The turbo has done less than 3000km's and the manifold and turbo exhaust have been coated and havent been used since.

I'm going to swap my valve stem seals when I change my cams so hopefully they turn up next week. With this new stuff installed and a tune I should reach my goal of 300rwhp and then I can get the body sorted for paint. I've decided since the silvia isn't really worth anything to sell and I really really like it I'll just keep it. So next up is paint job.
More interesting news is that the new turbo is exactly the same as the one I had. I dont know if the new one is a gt28rs or if the old one was a gt25/30. Does anyone know how to tell? My friend I bought them off cant remember what it was when he bought it.
Either way soon enough I'll have a gt28rs or gt25/30 for sale to try get back some of the $ I've dropped on this car lately.

I have the gt25/30 hks everything else is stock besides fmic exhaust fuel pump injectors nistune.
I made 275hp at 16psi. You def make 300 or more with Pon cams and the motor you got.
Good luck

jdm_sr20 : Cheers dude, This turbo and manifold made 285rwhp on my friends old s13SR 1600 @17psi without the cams so I'm hoping to get 300 or close to on 18psi with more response than you can poke a stick at.
*
I've been pretty slow on the updates but not a huge amount has happened.
The car has the new turbo and manifold installed. I used all braided lines for the water and oil feeds and remade the oil drain because the old one had a kink in it. Set up looks good and also seems to make the engine a fair bit quieter too. Overall pretty happy with the set up, looking forward to some extra hp and all that good stuff. One problem was putting the exhaust back on. It seems the manifold has moved the turbo placement slightly and now the exhaust is closer to the gearbox. I managed to flatten it with a hammer so its not as round as it used to be but now it hangs lower under the car. The exhaust flexi join has been eating the pavement anyway so I think the front pipe will have to be remade. Anyway that's enough chit chat, No one reads this stuff anyway they just want some pictures.

My cams also turned up today. I might try to get these installed tomorrow. The problem is changing the valve stem seals the way I plan to do it is something I haven't done before. I'm doing it at a friends workshop because I'm not confident enough to do it on my own at home, I will still be doing the job while it's at his workshop but at least I can ask him for help if I need it. He doesn't work on the weekend so if I don't finish it tomorrow the car will be sitting there for the weekend and most of next week since I'm going away. I don't need the car or anything but don't want it sitting there for a week either. See how I go tomorrow.

Car went into the workshop today. I was looking forward to trying to get it all sorted and go driving tonight but sometimes stuff just doesnt go like you had planned. I got the tools they usually use to try to do the job with the head still on car and had a go with a spare head we had sitting on the floor from my mates sr20's. At first when it occured to me it wasnt going to work but I kept calm and tried a few differnt ways.

It was about this time the hoist man came and had to do a service on the hoist. They put the car so high I couldn't reach it so I had lunch. Things slowed down significantly after that because I wasn't super amped anymore and just wanted to get it apart. By the end of the day (It is friday and I could feel the lack of motivation setting in) we got the new stem seals in place and the burnt sheet cleaned off the exhaust valves and got the valves, springs, retainers and those tiny little clip things back in before we shut up shop for the night.

Pistons look good, as does the bores so that's good news. I knew what they were from the part number written underneath them but heres a picture of them for you guys.

The car didn't have head studs or a metal head gasket so I jumped right onto frsport.com (my new fav site) and picked up arp head studs and a cometic multi-layer gasket for a little over 200 bux. Postage was expensive but I did pay extra to try to get it in a hurry. Still cheaper than a set of head studs locally and I get a free head gasket :P The cometic ones are mint, we used ours over and over on the drag car and never had a problem. If I get keen, the head and engine might be coming apart at a later date so studs/gasket are re-useable instead of stock head bolts and head gasket which should be replaced each time so I look at it as saving in the long run.

I have let this thread slip a bit but car is all finished. First things first the smoke is all gone, as was suspected the valve stem seals were shot. Mostly the exhaust valves but I changed the lot anyway. While I had the whole thing apart I found these small copper washers underneath the lifters on the exhaust side. After chatting to a guy at a head re-co place he said they were probably put in there to shut the engine up, a bit of a patch up job. I took them out on his advice and it seems to have stopped the lifter noise or severely limited it anyway. One of the washers wasn't sitting flush with the bottom of the hole anymore and the lifter had started to shape it into a flatter out-of-shape version of its former self. I suspect that's why it was so noisy in the first place but I cant be sure. Head gasket and studs are doing their job and I managed to get it all done without it leaking oil or water when i started driving it :P (That's a bit of a first for me usually I miss something). However, on inspection today I found that my water pump is shagged so I'm waiting for a new one to turn up from veales and I'll stick it back together.
My idle is out of whack, Car will stall after driving and coming to a normal stop. I presume the cams affected it all more than I had expected. The tune will require a touch up anyway but it's a bit of a pain in the ass driving it atm. Car sounds different when its on boost or revving higher. It has the gay farty SR sound that I hate, I might spring for another muffler or something. Is this normal with such small cams? The last lot I installed were bigger (272's) so I expected it to change significantly at that stage.
I'm also on the look out for a early shape 200sx s14. I plan to tear my car to pieces and take my engine and gearbox and chuck them in a 200. I like s13's but I must be getting old because I want aircon and abs and stuff like that. My engine is great though so I want to keep it and I also want to keep my 33r wheels and 33gtst brakes F+R. I might build the s13 back up with left overs and sell it or I might just try to sell as many parts as I can and sell the shell. Not sure yet.
Anyway, pics to come.

Had a useless handbrake the other day and got under to find out that the block I made to hold the new handbrake cables had split the mount for one of the cables sheath things. I decided rather than replace the cable to bolt it on again and then make up those small strips of sheet to keep it in place. Adjusted up great and hasn't been a problem since. In fact the handbrake probably works even better than it used to.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0177.jpg
This brings me to a bit of a crossroads. I want a different car, Ive decided on an s14. Either model doesn't really bother me but in a perfect world it would be a series 1 with ABS and air con. Good condition body and interior and I would like to chuck in my engine, my brake set up and wheels and be happy. My silvia has some good pieces in it but ultimately its not worth much. I think i will end up stripping it down and selling whatever it left. I was originally planning to get the car running again with the engine that will come in my s14 but if anyone wants a licenced chassis or any of the parts in my car hit me up.

Not sure what to do with this now.
Its got much better parts than my new engine but since I only want to make about 300rwhp my new engine will handle it easily so I wont need this one.
JE pistons 87mm/8.5:1 compression
Cometic metal head gasket
ARP head studs
Tomei Poncams
greddy style sump extension
New valve stem seals <
Was built by previous owner about 5 years ago but sat for 18 months before I bought it so not sure on km's but not that many.
Anyway after the Wednesday nights shake down (170km's down) I chucked it back on the hoist Thursday (where the car spends half of its time) and checked to make sure I had tightened everything up/Everything was still ok.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0027.jpg
Brakes were sheetting me so I skimmed the rear rotors and put some of this stop squeak stuff on the front brake pads to stick them to the caliper because mine used to squeal like a pig all the time unless they were hot. They still make some noise but no where near as badly as they used to.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0030.jpg
And thats about it so far. It cracked past 300km's last night and all seems well.
I nearly punted the car into a tree in canning vale last night on my way home from dinner but I guess I had a guardian angel looking out for us so we missed it. It was wet and I wasn't really paying attention and before you know it you are facing the wrong way as a passenger. I cant see any damage and it still drives straight so I think I just managed to cover it in dirt. Will inspect it properly today and report back.
Here is my new favourite picture just for HaHa's

Hey Ross,
Thanks, It turned out pretty good. Its just a basic rebuild but like I said in the beginning its better than buying an import motor for twice the price and crossing your fingers.
Even better when other guys add in their tips and tricks. Hopefully it would be enough to make people get out their and try it themselves. If you find a decent engineering place they can answer any questions you have, They do build them every day after all.
Anyway :
New motor is going 700+km strong and no dramas so far.
So I bought it some presents, these will be the "made it 1000km's and didnt break anything presents"

First oil change in a few hundred km's and then get this bad boy tuned with the new cams. I went for Brian Crower stuff because people have been reporting great success with this stuff especially in the states and I wanted to give it a try. Even though Tomei is pretty much the same price I'm confident the BC wont let me down. It was a huge toss up for me between the moroso sump and the cast one that I had fitted to the last engine. No problems with the cast one other than needing some thread tape on the sump plug and the Moroso was about $200 extra but since I have developed a love for anything american after building my hilux it won out.

Thanks Alex.
It might have a good engine/gearbox etc etc but it still looks pretty awful up close. Problem is new paint wont make it faster so it isn't getting any :)
Well update.
Boring but a bit of stuff happened in this time.
Moroso sump fitted. Went in alright holds more oil (5L now) over all pretty happy. Plus all the ants and bugs in the neighbourhood can read the massive "Moroso" sticker that you can see on the front of it as I drive over them. This was also the first oil change for the new engine. Oil still came out black but I don't think you can stop that. Its done about 1200 km's so I'm calling it "run-in"

Dome day! I don't have any pics or videos just yet but I did manage a few good sideways sections and I've seen at least one video of it so if I can get a link I'll chuck it up. Only problem I had was car getting hot after getting killed for three laps. Wasn't too bad but I wasn't keen to see what happened if I left it and we get a hot day so today I checked it over and replaced the radiator, the clutch in the fan and the thermostat. The radiator was about 20% blocked up so not too bad but the clutch on the fan was hammered. It had signs of leaking and didn't have the "air moving" power that it used to so I think that's where my problem came from. My car is rocking an s14 radiator so I just replaced it with another one. I replaced the thermostat because they are 20 bux.

New cams, Cam gears and rocker stoppers are in.
- BC 264/12 and 264/12
- Gkteck rocker stoppers
- Circuit Sports adjustable cam gears.
All went in pretty easy, no show stoppers. I did have to take the dowel in the front of the exhaust cam out of the stocker cam and pop it into the new one because the new BC cam's dowel wasn't long enough to go into the gear that runs the CAS. Cutting the cam cover to clear the rocker stoppers was easily the worst part because it got crap everywhere and it took me ages to clean it all up! Not too many pictures I just wanted to get it done plus the rain yesterday was making it hard enough.

With the standard cams and s13 cam gears.

New bits ready to go.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0697.jpg
The dowel from the standard cam installed into the BC cam. The original dowel in the BC cam didn't extend into the gear part that runs the CAS. The aftermarket cam gears are the same thickness as the original one so I'm not sure how everyone else makes it work?
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0698.jpg
Just waiting for the timing chain tensioner to be installed and the cam cover to go back on.
The head in this thing looks pretty serious now but the adjustable cam gears wont give me as much of a gain as a functioning VCT unit would. My engine is run by a microtech so it didn't operate the VCT anyway. At least it can be tuned for maximum midrange and response and I don't mind if a bit of outright power falls by the wayside in order to do it.

As you can see car got tuned today. Over-all went pretty well, engine was all good and most of the car is going well. Turbo is on its death bed so I think a replacement is on the cards since that's all the boost it would make even with my boost controller at 95% duty cycle. But I got it for nothing so I guess I cant complain. I will most likely pull it off tomorrow and get a replacement asap.
Making 300rwhp on what is 13psi at that stage in the rev range shows that the engine set up will make power and its higher than I had expected. Still making it too high for my liking so with the fresh turbo I will ask the guys to have another go at getting my midrange back. The car moves out pretty good as it is however I could use an extra five hundred rpm until redline.
I've got a quote for a fresh turbo from Tengoku already and I have looked online as well but I want it in a hurry so I'll try a few local places tomorrow too. If I can get it fitted and tune fixed up next week I will be a happy camper.
I <3 my Silvia even though it looks like a piece of shit

Hey Trav,
Yeah I think its the whole fresh engine / big cams thing helping out the dead turbo there. I think I will choose a gtx2860r to replace this bad boy. I did want response after all and they are getting more hp out of the GTX series turbos than the old ones. 10% more in fact which means I should max out my injectors no problem. I'm worried that the cams might be a bit big for the kind of power curve I was chasing but I will replace the turbo first and then see how it goes.
Moroso sump is great dude. Quality is awesome, but I needed to drill out a few of the side holes to get it sitting perfect.

Car is at pzp at the minute so hopefully have some results to post up soon.
Bought myself some R32 GTR wheels now so no more stretched tyres for me. Plan is to get some form of semi R comp tyre like R1R or ku36 fitted and see if I can keep up with the other guys around some corners. :)
I'll get some pictures later on. Also got a dodgy rear wheel bearing so I'll try to get that sorted before the dome day on Sunday

Car is tuned again.
Waste gate actuator was letting me down so it was only able to produce 1 bar and that dropped to 13 psi at max hp :( Huge mid-range pick up and response is much better too. I think that the weak actuator is making it spool slower than it could too so I have got my hands on another and will swap them out after the weekend. My cam gears have been adjusted probably 10 times + now and that really seemed to make the difference we were looking for, Hopefully that's the last time they will need to be played with. It turns out due to the nature of the set up in this case VCT probably wouldn't have helped me in pick up or top end.
Still produced 233kw (I think that's about 310hp) at the rears at 13 psi. In all honesty that's probably going to be about it for tuning at this stage of the game. I refuse to switch out the injectors because I have promised myself I am not chasing HP. I want this car to stay in one piece and its making more than I ever thought it would with a much lower boost setting. I'm not sure where I put the dyno sheet but when I find it I'll post it up.
My focus is getting some tyres for my new r32 GTR wheels and getting it ready for the track. My car wont look as "stanced" as it is now but I would prefer grip more than looks and I think with smaller wheels it will look even more stock than it is now which kind of appeals to me. Might even paint it.

Had a development day at collie motorplex yesterday.
It was awesome, had some guys teaching me how to drive and from the start of the day towards the end I could feel the huge improvements I had made. I was overtaking people and not sliding all over the show and it really helped me learn about being smooth. I could use some better tyres on the rear now that the fronts are so good but I was able to drive around that and I don't even think it was bothering me too much. I can just feel the difference it would make having a bit more grip back there. My car is very fast even on the low boost (10psi) setting and I don't think too many people could match its get out of the corner and straight line speed (even the proper race cars) But they could eat me up under brakes and around the corners so that's where I will be working on. I think my brakes were great and didn't give me the slightest problem so i think its going to take a bit more driver improvement before anyone is scared of my lap times!
As far as my car goes I was thrashing the crap out of it all day long and it didn't give me one single problem. Brakes were mint (r33 gtst front and rear, Bendix ultimate pads, discs that used to be slotted once but are now smooth) Gearbox was fine as was my clutch but I wasn't doing super
dooper drag racing shifts. Engine is mint, pulls hard all the way to redline, doesn't breath, leak, cough, splutter, etc My water temp after 5 hard laps is 84. Plus it is still as quiet as a mouse except for the exhaust which I have grown to dislike because sr's with cams/gears sound so sheet lol. I think I'll get a decent jap cat back to hopefully shut it up a bit.
Will get some pics for you shortly.

Today I got my car out of the carport that it lives in and did some suspension tuning. It hasn't moved since I got home from Collie, I have to take it for a drive to get the rust off the rotors and wash off the dust because I got a spot in the SilviaWA dome day tomorrow. :)
Basically you chuck the car on the scales and get the weight as even as you can. In a street car its never going to be perfect. Its the reason you see fuel tanks in the corner of peoples boots and battery's on the outside edges.
This is the car on the scales
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0855.jpg
Its got the be on level ground and the car has to be sitting there with half of a tank of fuel and a driver. I'm about 80kg's with my helmet and all my clothes and stuff so its tough balancing the car around me sitting in the drivers seat on one side of the car :/
This is what the car started out like.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0854.jpg
Without a driver its about 1140kg. Weight spread is not great but I have no way of knowing how the coil-overs are adjusted as I just made them even and that effects it. Its still got everything in it basically so I guess its about average total weight wise.
By the end of the messing with coil over adjustments ( time consuming/frustrating ) I got it to this with me sitting in the drivers seat, I cant stay perfectly still so it goes up and down a bit but this is where it ended up. I struggled with the rear and this is because there isn't a huge amount of weight I can shift and the adjustment on the coil overs can only get you so far. The book we have says the front is much more important than the rear and the cross section is the one that should be almost 50%
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0856.jpg
So there you go. Probably wont make me any faster but every little bit helps. I didn't know if I would be getting a place in the SilviaWA dome day till yesterday so I'm still rocking crap tyres on the back but once I've got RS-R's all the way around I should be slightly more competitive on any racetracks I encounter. Thanks to the Sports Car Builders Club for lending my dad their scales and I stole them for the morning :)
Here is a interesting comparo, While we had the scales out we chucked my sisters car on. Its pretty much a stock s15, its got kakimoto exhaust and blitz FMIC and 350z wheels. Other than that its about stock. Its a bit of a fat arse!! Decent weight spread though, So all you s15 guys out there I hope you enjoy your extra 140kg handicap :)

Here is the dyno sheet from my last tune a little while back. You can see where the GTX takes off from the old disco spud but the actuator is the same as before and is causing the same problems with my boost curve.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0875.jpg
I said I was going to stop trying to make more power but I think this actuator was not only stopping it from holding more than 13psi at high rpm but also weak and letting it leak early on in the rev range and making it spool slower. So I've got myself another wastegate actuator in preparation of the next tune.
Few more bits and pieces coming soon

Installed this clutch set up today.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMG_2452.jpg
5 puck, Heavy pressure plate, Chromo flywheel.
Not sure what brand anything is because nothing was written on them. Ive seen a receipt that said it was Exedy but who knows. Flywheel is at least 2kg lighter than my old one and this set up did a grand total of 1000km before I pulled it out of the last car. So its all pretty much new.
OK, Why did I switch out a perfectly good clutch?
To install my new PPG gearbox :P
The gearbox was fitted with PPG helical cut synchromesh gearset like this one :

Here is a comparison pic of a normal input shaft and the input shaft from the new gearbox.

NEW:
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMG_6107.jpg
And since you cant see anything from the outside of the car I don't have any more pictures. It sounds very "v8 supercar" in first, second and third. Fourth is quiet I figure since its 1:1. I was going to tear the box apart to take pictures but in the end I just wanted to get it fitted. Not sure if you can hear it from outside very well plus my exhaust is loud but its pretty cool knowing I shouldn't have too much to worry about gearbox wise.
Big thanks to Tim for helping me switch the gearbox today and John for letting me take over half his workshop! ;)

New tyres.
Bridgestone Adrenalin RE002. 225/50r16 all the way around. At 220 treadwear they are not as soft as my RS-R's were but I couldn't buy RS-R's in 225/50 and I didn't want to shell out $300 per tyre for R1R's. I got change out of $900 and I found the best price at Bob Jane in Armadale of all places!! They are also nitrogen filled which explains the cool red valve caps. I'm pretty sure the tyre shop was wondering why I was spending over $800 on tyres for a car that looks like its worth about $800 total but there you go.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0032_zps3bbe83bf.jpg
There is something so painful about pulling apart a perfectly good engine. To date my cars "budget" engine has been awesome and I'm pretty sure its all run in now. The bores look pretty much the same as when i closed it up but they have lost some of their cross hatching on either side. That's just the rings bedding and it's all part of the running in process, overall I'm pretty happy.

The head has been dropped off at All Torque to get resurfaced for the new metal head gasket and even though they said I could pick it up an hour later I left it there till tomorrow when I'm ready to chuck it back on.
While I had everything in bits I swapped out my injectors for some bigger ones.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/gts26tt/IMAG0038_zps07fe4c09.jpg
Next step was to switch out the pump for a new one. Its an Aeromotive Stealth. Its a big one 340L/Ph over the 240lLPh Walbro I had. At the moment I'm using stock wiring to the pump but I may need to chuck in a relay. I will see how it goes for now.

I test fitted my studs and then had to take them out to put the head back on. I used ARP2000 studs to suit sr20det

I used this HKS gasket I have been saving for such an occasion. We coated it in the ACL Hylomar spray and chucked it on.

Everything else is pretty much ready to go. The intake and exhaust are back on I just need to finish the Radiator and Intercooler pipes and flush the coolant. Then I have to wait till Monday when I pick up my fuel and I can run it up, Swap the oil and then it will be ready for a tune.

Got my fuel today and now all I'm waiting for is the intake air temp sensor to get it running again.

Fingers crossed it all runs on Monday.

get that fuel off the ground ... it will absorb water (hydroscopic) into it... a few blocks of wood / a pallet will do fine.

Thanks man, we had just gotten it off the ute.
Anyway Silvia is back on the road.
After a bit of a tune by listening and adjusting the CAS and fuel mixture trim we settled on pulling out 30% fuel and putting the cas where it idles the best. Idles ok, drives nice coughs its guts up about 4ish but other than that its alright. Smells weird, going to take some getting used to. I couldn't get it in to be tuned for three weeks at PZP and I booked it for the 26th. I don't want to wait that long thought so I might give Rotomotion a shot, I'll try to get there tomorrow to ask.
Huge thanks to Tim (tinny) for helping me with it today and the other day and he is also the one that figured out WTF was up with my air temp sensor. Which works now btw. No more errors for me, So other than that it looks about the same. So no pictures for you.
I'll keep you posted...

How did your tune go? Have you taken this around barbs? What times does it do?

No news to report mate.
The car was dropped off on the 26th and its been there ever since. They were struggling to get the Microtech to advance the ignition timing but I'm not sure if it was the Microtech playing games or the tuner coming to terms with one. Then the next update I got said it looked like that was sorted out but the car wouldn't make more power with extra boost. So at 14psi it made 320ish and then at 19 psi it was still making about the same. They stopped tuning and compression tested the engine but that came up fine. Then they tested the cars piping and intercooler for boost leaks but that came up fine too. It was two days later so I'm pretty sure they were sick of it at that point and moved on to other jobs and will get back to my car when they can.
I don't like other people working on my car at the best of times as I take pride in doing everything myself. Plus it seems when others are involved everything slows down and I really like to finish things so this is pissing me off slightly. But on the other hand with my jobs long hours I wouldn't have been able to use it anyway.
I will get myself to barbs and some more tracks at some point but atm I'm kind of stuck.
