in light of yesterdays tragic incident i encourage all antilaggers to ensure your 4b has proper recovery points for vehicle recovery
for less than a few cartons of beer and an afternoons spannerwork you can increase dramatically the safety of yourself and others with some rated recovery points and shackles available from many 4wd stores/websites
the simplest being the reece hitch recovery point
and perhaps some rated front brackets that will accept a load rated shacle pin

happy 4wding!

Better yet, do a 4WD course so you understand recovery techniques, so you will know when some numpty tries to recover you it's being done safely.

RIP, what a waste, poor family!

doesn't say if they were snatching, or just trying to tow the stuck car out, but given that it has snapped a tow ball, i guess they were snatching.

very sad, for something that could have been avoided very easily.

Even if you dont have a rear recovery point, removing the towball and putting a bow shakle in the hole is better than this, also the usage of a dampner might of saved her life

What a horrible way to go - I can't imagine how the family is feeling.
It is one of the text book accidents they talk about when you do a 4x4 course - alarming to hear about it happening.

I did my course years ago through these guys - http://www.eureka4wd.com.au/ - I recommend it.
No question is a dumb one and plenty of take home reading materials.

I have used just the snatch in the hole with the pin that locates the reece hitch .... but by far a proper tow hitch with a shackle is the go

i got stuck the other night and was saying the same thing to the old man about using the tow ball, tragic to see something like this happen, i haven't snatched using the towball of mine, i bought a recovery point but i can't remove the existing tow hitch, she is well stuck in there
any ideas on how to get it out?

That's sickening, feel so sorry for the family.
I've been taught from a very young age never to tow/snatch from a towball due to this happening... Hearing about it actually happening is pretty horrible.

Yeh people have no idea the forces at work when doing a snatch recovery. A full pull snatch on a snatch strap it springs back with about 16t of force check a tow ball they are rated at 250kg horizontal force.

Either put the snatch strap eye thru the pin in a Reece hitch, or a shackle thru the hole the tow ball bolts thru both of these ways are more than adequate to to do a recovery.
