Ya, it is me. Where abouts do you live mate, and would you still be interested in detailing it every once in a while for me? I am in the hills at the moment, and am looking for someone to help me keep it looking it's best.

Good buy, planning anything for it ?

Thanks mate. Yea at the moment I'm contemplating buying a set of HKS coilovers off J3rk, the previous owner. They would be more suited to track work, so it would be nice to swap them in and out with the drag coilovers if I want to do track work or tear up the quarter mile. Other than that, just little things like replace the brake pads and disks, and maybe new rear tyres soon. I really just want to go out and drive it more than anything else though.

As some of you may have seen, I had a few runs at Whoop Ass Wednesday last week, and failed miserably. I was missing gears left right and centre and managed a best time of 13.9 hahaha. I have been driving it heaps since and am heading down in a couple of weeks to give it another crack, and hopefully run an 11 sec pass.

Gave it a wash today, and now she's all tucked away under the car cover until I get back from work.

Yea local prices are shithouse. I bought them from tirerack.com, it's an american site. Including shipping and import costs, they worked out $400 cheaper than if I had bought them in Aus.

Yea, I'll probably end up going down that road eventually. Just keen to see what it can do with street tyres for the moment.

What mph did you run?

Around 114mph I think , but it would have been higher if my shifting was better.

Turbo2.6L
17-10-2011, 12:12 PM
If you run an 11 or 120mph(ish), you'll be banned until you meet S/ST regs. Might as well slap drag radials on straight up as it should run those numbers easily with 700hp.

bettsc
17-10-2011, 12:41 PM
Yea I know. As far as I am aware all I need is a super street licence to run under 12.00, which can be bought from the motorplex anyway.

Approved 4point Harness, TS loop, Battery Isolation Switch, Approved Full Face Helmet, ANDRA License.
Lot of cash/dicking around for a car that will barely see the track, so just do it on drag radials to begin with imo.

Went to the Jacks Hill Climb with NoLimits Car Club last sunday and had a wicked time. The supra wasn't really suited to such a tight and technical track, because of the massive turbo lag, so I stopped worrying about getting a good time and just enjoyed thrashing the car.

Yeah I have the RSR's, 265/35/18 and in comparison to the KU 31's there is a big difference. I used to have to really feather the throttle in 2nd and even 3rd gear, as I would go sideways at anything over half throttle, now it hooks quite well.

IMO, run cheap tires on the street. It's more fun to fry them and you don't feel so bad about it.
Now that your used to the car you'll learn that there's nothing more fun then painting 80-140+ or watching people's expression as you start painting from 100 on the freeway.

Else keep the AD08's all day every day, they're hard enough to last ages whilst still having bullsh*t amounts of grip.
I tried a few tires and nothing compared to the AD08's for performance/longevity. JME told me this, I passed on said knowledge!

Toyo R1R's for a good all-rounder that wont hurt the wallet. Ran 11.3 at the drags on them, 58's round barbs with them & hosed many a car on the street with them when i had my F6. Have same tyres on the GTR now & both cars ran 265/35r18 as per the poopra, at around $300 per corner locally.

Yea I think I'll stick with the AD08's. They still spin in 3rd and second, but they keep the car tracking straight when they do, unlike the Kumhos, which just threw the back around violently. Did you ever brake boost the supra Paul? That's a damn good way to lay big strips with the AD08's :)

Thanks Jamie, yea it's still running the HKS drag setup. They are starting to leak now though, so I'm looking for something else. Was talking to Fetish about them the other day and will probably end up running the same coilovers as his red supra. Forgot to put these pics up.
Spent all day friday working on the soup. Spent 4 hours raising the coilovers up a bit, installed a fire extinguisher, and got a wheel alignment in preparation for the hill climb on sunday. On the drive home friday night it starts cutting out mid-boost, and fuel pressure dropped. Got home and found the feeds for the fuel pumps had shat themselves.

Mad rush down to auto1 on saturday and rewired the feeds with thicker gauge wire and upgraded fuse holders. It's funny how things tend to go wrong at the worst possible time.

Went down to Kwinana Motorplex last night and managed to get 5 runs. First two I dropped the clutch off the line and just had diff hop all through first, managed a 13.2 and a 13.1. Then dropped the tyre pressures down, slipped the clutch off the line and ran a 12.21, then a 12.11, and finally a 12.01. I reckon I could have got an 11 sec pass but after the last run oil pressure started to drop so I called it a night. By the time I got home it had developed a pretty bad rattle from the engine, could possibly be the big end bearing or the mains bearing. Not good news! Anyway here is a pic of the timeslip.

300rwhp supra - 12's.
650rwhp supra - 12's.

So accurate!

130mph is 10-sec territory in a GT-R, so with some traction (and anything faster than the lol-worthy 2.1 60' time) it should get there.

Low oil pressure, followed by knocking sound, big end bearings GONE. No good :(

Get it towed to a workshop, throw a set of shells in it, machine the crank, good to go.

125mph would go a high 10 in a GTR Brockas. I managed an 11.2 @ 125 with a dismal sixty footer due to bad car prep, but a better launch would have seen 10.9X quite easily.

Slowest MPH I've seen a GT-R do a 10 in is 127 IIRC, and that was Bobbo's that had a dogbox, so minimal lost between gear changes.

Natalotto needed 131mph to do 10.91 with a stock box.

10's might be possible from 125mph, but it'd have to be a bloody perfect run.

suspension, tyres & driving.

You already got the power to run a low 10@135mph +

Torquen
22-03-2012, 01:40 PM
Also agree that no more power is needed. There's easily a 10 in there with the right setup... more power is just going to make it harder to launch/drive well.

As I said to you the other night Caillim E85 is now $3.50/L coupled with the reduced km's you get per tank = expensive (for not a lot of gain).

On a positive note, great MPH and 12.1 still isn't too bad for street tyres and a manual.

Turbo2.6L

I'm not really that bothered with making it into a drag car anyway. Would be much happier keeping it as an all rounder. I won't spend much money trying to make it go fast on the 1/4 mile, rather I'm keen to do more track days and see how it goes around barbs with some decent coilovers. I have been planning to run e85 anyway, just not this soon, so I might have to think about it for a while longer.

Depending how you set it up you could essentially have the turbo spool up before launch see below. It is detrimental to the manifold/turbo if used often though, neither of which are cheap on your car.

Get the haltech tuned with a flex fuel sensor, setup tune to adjust with ethanol content.
Pour in e85 when heading to the drags/circuit, no tune swapping bs to deal with.

If you have no e85 on hand, just fill with premium, easy as!

Yea well I don't drive it on the street that much, so shelling out extra $ for the e85 won't really bother me, and it would be nice to have the boost come on a bit earlier too. I'll have a talk to Zack about the launch control functions, they sound pretty interesting.

A handful of decent powered skylines over east have been setup this way, a few have done this with the plugin Link/Vipec ecus, but the newer haltechs are already setup for it from what I've been told... keep in mind it will be a bit time consuming in the tuning than a normal one off tune.

Here's a read to get your head around some of the concepts

Not much planned in the way of upgrades yet. Will wait to see how bad the damage is. I'm thinking about upgrading the oil pump to something with higher pressure and more volume. Injectors need to be upgraded as well. Unless Mick recommends anything else I am happy to leave it as it as at the moment and concentrate on getting the suspension and tyres set up properly. I'm on the lookout for another set of rims with some wider rears. I would keep the RE30's as a track rim with semi slicks on and use the bigger rims as a street set, if I get the right offset I should be able to fit some 300's or 315's under the rears.

I have been researching like mad about tyres. So sick of loosing traction.

I nailed it down to two options for semi slicks. Toyo R888 or Nitto Nt-01. These are the best compromise between decent traction and decent handling. Also recommend to lower your tyre pressure down to 25psi. Found them for about $260 a tyre in 275/35/18. Shipping from the USA is about $250 for 2 or $300-320 for 4. Local prices are about $450 a tyre.

Otherwise just go all out and go for Mickey thompson/BF Goodrich drag radials. However these will not be so good on the twisties.

+1 for CCW's or ADV1's. CCW's are done everywhere mainly as you can get ridiculously wide and run like 400 tyres on 13" wide rims.

Everyone loves ADV1's, but I'm about to buy a house and can't justify spending close to 10k on a rim and tyre setup at the moment.

Ok so.... I've managed to narrow it down to two types of rims. All from CCW. I know I will be getting 18x10" in the front, and 17x11.5" in the rear, but I'm unsure of which rim to go with and what colours also. I know some of you will have some thoughts.....

I really like the colour and simplicity of the C14's, and they would show off the grex brakes nicely. The classics are cool because they have a nice lip on the rears, but they won't show much of the brakes and rotors. Thoughts??

A smaller rim on the rear means I can run a tyre with slightly taller sidewall, meaning (hopefully) more traction when running e85.

Lol, assumed it was a typo at first. 18" front & 17" rear will look ridiculous.
You will need 18's minimum on a supra before they look decent & the difference in sidewall between the 2 will mean SFA when you have 700hp on the street. If you want traction, run 15" Weld ProStars with MT ET Streets

I'm pretty sure the main caps use the same stud size as stock. Have just looked at my invoice, because I'm pretty sure I ordered the L19 1/2" head studs, but on my invoice it shows the titan H11 standard size head studs. They took 10 weeks to build my block, after they told me 4-6 weeks, and two of the smaller packages they sent me had incorrect tracking numbers and packaging invoices, which made them a bitch to get through customs. I think Nero is one of the head guys there, so I'm just going to ask to speak to him tonight and ask him to send me the L19's ASAP.

No worrys bettsc.. Just make sure you check the studs in the block before you send them back.. If they have sent you standard studs they may not have prepped the block for 1/2" studs either?

I spoke to Titan about it last night and apparently they don't stock the L19's anymore, so they sent me the Titan version, which are rated to the same pressure as the L19 stud. Why they still advertise the L19's on their website, and why they didn't mention it to me when I asked for them is beyond me.

I'm going to get them to confirm in writing what they told me last night, just in case we boost it up and the studs don't hold. I'll be fucking pissed if that's the case.
