G'day,
Got given a bottle of oil, castrol hypogear 85w140, wish to know if it will be good to go in my diff.?

Vehicle: VX SS sedan.
Kms: 260,000.
Diff serviced: NEVER!? (far as I know. Bolts look untouched)

will this oil be ok for use?, ie: viscosity index, additives needed? Etc

Did a pretty in depth GOOGLE search, and not even other forums or spec sheets could tell me if it'll work.

Any advice or information that will help greatly appreciated!

If it is a synthetic oil which i am guessing it is from the large range then it will be equivalent to roughly a 75w90 non-synthetic. If that is what your manual suggests it'll be alright.

Oh and check whether you need GL4 or GL5 as well.

From www.castrol.com.au chose a VX with 5,7litre V8.

For the rear axle they recommend:

"CASTROL SAF-XA
Full synthetic rear axle fluid incorporating Castrol's most advanced transmission fluid technology. Engineered to provide protection at the extremes of high and low operating temperatures, it is our prime recommendation for rear axles used in competition, severe duty and long drain applications. Suitable for both limited and non-limited slip rear axles. SAE 80W-140, API GL5/6."

As far as I can understand, the oil is used in place of the recommended 80w90, in ambient temps above 30°c.
But will it be too thick on startup? Eg: 6am and it's 5° outside!?

Cash is tight, and my diff is not. I want the damn thing fixed! Haha

I am using an 80w140 atm and it is fine in the current climate.
