Well just finished a pretty decent meal at a more higher end restaurant and was told couldnt take home the bones/meat (for my dog) home.

Manager said the rule was under the "health board" or something like that? And If i ate the food at a later date and got sick they could be at fault? Even though i said it was for my dog.

If i have payed for the food doesnt it make it my property??

This is the first i have ever heard or this and have never been refused before...

Pissed me off a bit (especially when spending a fair amount) as my dog would of loved the bones/meat to munch on and instead it just goes to waste.

Any truth behind what the dude is saying?

Never heard of that before, I live near my folks so if I go out to some place I always get the bones/eaten ribs etc and bring them home for their dogs. Never had an issue with it.. unless it's a new thing just implemented.

I've been to a couple of places that actually stick a warning to the doggy bag saying that they will not be held liable etc... Been like that for a while now.

yep heard of that before.

if your dog choked on it, im sure they might even be liable some how..

i suppose the stricter/high class places would do that.

just greedy people suing and ruining it for other people is all.

They cant stop you leaving with the food, they will just refuse to give you a vessel to take it away in.

If you bring food home and eat it tomorrow or in 3 days time then get sick, they are liable for the food poisoning.

Yup heard of it and had it happen to me as well.

Yeaaaars back there was a few people that got sick off dodgily reheated left overs and they tried to sue the restaurant. So for a while no where gave you doggy bags.

Its been relaxed a bit now as anyone who isnt a retard knows how to re-heat leftovers but there is still a few places that won't do it.

its pretty stupid, if you get sick and die of dodgy left overs, thats natural selection.

i suggest $10 into a waiters hand and the promise that you will say you werent allowed to take it.

worked in a few pubs and this is pretty standard. though i generally slip take away containers to the customer whilst continually telling them i'm sorry but i cannot let you take the food away. if you sneak it off your plate and into your mrs handbag not my problem.

seafood obviously is a big nono, where i work now is slightly more relaxed

Health act mate, if you took it home and 'ate' it and got sick you can sue them.

Its been in place for a long time now, most restaurants (asian ones, not being racist here) don't care about it and let ya take food home but the upper class restaurants keep it in mind all the time.

I can't see places like Rockpool or Jackson's giving you a doggy bag regardless.

Pancho's in vic park let a bunch of my mates put their fishbowl cocktails in take away containers. needs to be more of that.

sort of off topic but you shouldn't be feeding your dogs cooked bones.

Hmmm, all those places selling take away food must be taking a huge risk... or do they have special take away insurance??

You will find it is to do with the different type of licensing

Yes... I'm sure the chance of food poisoning changes due to the type of license.

Have heard of restos saying this but you are 100% correct.
Missus has worked in the Health Department and is finishing her Masters of Public Health and we have done this everywhere without fail. No such rule exists and you have every entitlement to go home with your food. I just hope you didn't mention you had intended to feed your dog the left overs at the resto!
