saw this on SAUWA and thought it would be of interest, as many of us use ebay often.

basically the government has a growing interest in how much we buy and sell online, and it shows the desire they have to control and essentially tax all transactions.
seems like another outlandish stunt to some, but i welcome the move in a bid to stop tax evaders and the like.

copy and pasted:

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Centrelink have each advised eBay that they will be issuing formal requests for information relating to sales by Australian eBay members who sold over $20,000 worth of goods on eBay.com.au during the tax year ending June 2011.
The ATO and CentreLink have indicated that they will request the following information in relation to affected sellers:

* Contact name
* Address
* Telephone number
* Email and IP address
* User ID
* Date of birth
* Date of registration on eBay
* Monthly and annual sales volumes and value
* Power seller status
* eBay store status

eBay is legally required to comply with these requests for information. In addition, such disclosure is also permitted pursuant to our Privacy Policy. We confirm that disclosure will be made to the ATO by August 1 2011 and in accordance with Centrelink’s required timeframes. eBay may also be required to provide available bank account information.

For further information regarding the ATO or Centrelink, please visit www.ato.gov.au or www.centrelink.gov.au. Those affected sellers may also wish to consult with their professional legal or tax adviser.

Regards,

The eBay team

It's been on their to do list for years.

I reckon it's a good thing. If you sell a crap load on the net, and it looks like a business, then pay tax on your profits, simple.

Regular Joe selling shit occasionally shouldn't worry.

Sell 2 cars a year, no worries.

Sell 2 a week, start worrying.

Time to edit your account details boys.

Or just have multiple accounts...

Multiple paypals? Multiple bank accounts?

They'll still find out. Their data matching is quite sophisticated.

Short of setting up a bank account in a fake name, or maybe doing cash sales on your ebay account, not a chance.

Having said that, this looks promising!:

^^ Be careful with bitcoin, there was a TIME magazine article about the currency recently.

say you buy a whole of new shit somewhere for say $50 000, then sell online for $30 000 secondhand, can they hit you up then??

If so, claim as a loss in your "business"???

This is actually something similar to what cashed up people have been doing when they buy their Lambos and Fezzas... they get a dealer's license, buy the car brand new, don't pay LCT as it has not yet been sold (considered as inventory), drive it for a while, then they sell it for less, claim a loss, pay less LCT than they should have, and profit from tax savings! Or something to that effect...

maybe i'm missing the point, but wouldn't the ferrari factory question why they are selling a brand new car to a dealer who doesn't have any inventory/business location?

I don't know the precise details, but it is a well known LCT loophole:

That may have been what the bloke in Sydney who bought the orange Koenigsegg as a demo but just never seemed to sell it. What an awesome loophole. Who wants to set up a dealership and have a "demo" Veyron / AM Zagato / Zonda :)

is it illegal ie tax evasion or a hole in the policy and you can't be charged with tax evasion?
