What do you use?
now really wanting to spend $1000+ on a HEMA GPS and maps.
Have heard of people buying cheaper China GPS units of ebay then loading the OziExplorer maps on, anyone done this?
Looking for something that will work offroad and can load waypoints into and not wanting to spend stupid money.
cheers mike

This was my plan orginally and i thought fuck yeh got an iphone lets go, then found out the iphone GPS still uses the mobile providers signal to work so soon as i get 100km out of Perth metro i loose signal and as such no GPS signal.

Buy a netbook, inverter and external GPS aerial
Choose GPS software you like - add OziExplorer/ShonkyMaps .... win?

yeh this was another option to buy once of them itab's or what ever they are called, the iPad rip off thats cost about $170 and run android.
But a 10" screen is a big unit to have mounted on the dash specially if i'm gonna be bashing over uneven terrain so would need to be very stury.

wrong mate check your phone settings,
i use MUDMAP regularly on iphone pumped to the headunit for huge display.
works a treat out bush, you dont need a phone signal, uses the gps of the iphone flawlessly.

Ive never had a problem with gps signal, however jeep doesn't have a metal roof, if it was a prob id just put the fone in a screen holder. you can buy gps boosters that dont require a bluetooth data connection, they just boost the gps signal locally.

i have all them apps already hahaha.
What settings do i need to check on my phone? I've been hearing mixed stories about the iphone GPS some people said it worked fine offroad them someone else told me i need a phone signal for it to work.
Then when i was down Dwellingyup last week my GPS didnt work so i assumed that was right.

the iphone uses phone tower triangulation and GPS for locating you, make sure location services are turned ON, and use a decent APP that only uses the GPS signal, ie MUDMAP or similar.
GPS signals are incredibly weak, infact if you use a spectrum analyser, you cant see them, they are hidden in the background noise, so positioning of the iphone is critical in hilly or wooded areas, any GPS will struggle if it cant see the sky.
You should never rely on GPS to plot your position.
The amount of times i had to direct US forces who were lost when i was in the forces in the UK was silly ;)

Pretty much what Im running. Mine runs OZI explorer for offroad and IGO for the street maps..
Picked it up from Autotainment in burswood, he loaded up a fair few maps for me including Hema's and most of the CALM maps which i find alot more detailed than hema's.
Its a 5" unit and I havent had any problems with it at all, I think I paid around the $400 mark for it.

Devilfish: What maps do you run on MudMap? i already have the standard fitted gregorys one and i just downloaded 2 itopo maps one for north east perth area and one for Pinjarra to Collie type area. Seem to have most of the tracks in my tracks and trails book marked on there.
I was tempted by one of those chinese gps units, very easy to load more maps on. However I had purchased the VMS app for the iphone but also found the iphone gps struggling when off road.
I dug out my old iphone 3g, jailbroke it, loaded vms and tom tom on there and also purchased an app that allows the iphone to hook up to a bluetooth gps receiver and bought a receiver off ebay (Linky (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320597008654&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT)).
The end result is perfection, it grabs a very solid signal and does everything I wanted it to do. Pretty simple to do really just searching around on the net and an hour later the phone was jailbroken and then just had to wait for the receiver from ebay.

i got myself a cheap $300 notebook from harvey norman and downloaded ozi - got hema 08 maps and a heap of DEC maps. Also have some 25k and 50k maps of the southwest
this all runs to the front of the R51 where i have a 7" touchscreen mounted above the head unit - perfect height
this has been excellent so far and the bonus is i store all my music and videos on the laptop so i can watch them or have the mrs entertained while driving. All sound is via the aux port
then at camp i can pull the notepad out and use it around camp if need be
