View Full Version : Oval Exhaust pipe.
Hey all,
Im chasing oval 4" stainless exhaust pipe, does anyone know where i can source it locally?
Its readily available in the US, but freight is a killer because of the length.
Any recommendations?

Someone else has my idea!
Also found it overseas. We are going to make our own. If you do find it locally please tell me where :)

Does oval have gains over round?

Not at all, Scaf and I haven't discussed this but I would have assumptions for why he's looking into it, maybe the same reasons as I.
Oval has benefits for clearance, yes, and single systems have proven less restrictive than twins, but an oval exhaust will have more friction and resistance than a round exhaust of the same diameter.

Find local Burns stainless distributor.

I have it over here in WA but how are you going to go about the bends?
Josh - MetalCraft
So you can source it Josh? Im just assuming if i can get the straights i can get the bends?
I will also need two round into oval transitions.
The benefits are that no air speed will be lost through the exhaust system, will be 4 inch from the turbo right through, but i can keep the car low :)

I can get the 75.4 x 45.8 which is only around 2.5'" You might have to go a twin system. Doing the same setup on AGIT8D
We are trying to avoid a twin system, or I would just go twin 3inch.
I'll just keep asking around or else I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy from US.

Have you made a comparison between buying and getting made?
Circular mandrel bend, cut in half, weld in flat plate top and bottom. Rinse and repeat for every individual piece of exhaust pipe, before welding each oval component together.
Josh - confirm/deny?

This can be done, and is how I suggested we attempt it when I first had the idea.
Once I started looking around online I found a few of the same sites I assume Scaf has found, who sell oval pipe, bends, transitions, oval inlet and outlet low profile mufflers etc etc..
The tricky bit would be locating the same here. I'm unsure if you could 'massage' a 4" round pipe into an oval shape and would presume if you did it would not look very nice. Cutting and shutting a 3" may well present nicer but you would need to ensure there was nothing interfering with exhaust flow on the inside of the joins.
How much was freight when you enquired, Scaf?
As for air speed, there is more friction for oval than circle, but the benefits of being a single system instead of twin should balance that out nicely.

Just import it in 1200mm lengths

Very labor intensive, normally they are a welded tube but they are laser welded along the seem in ching chong china land
