View Full Version : stripped interior, now what?

stripped the interior of my track project with the aim of doing an 'ok' job of getting the sound deadening off, then wacking the front seats back in and getting stuck into other areas which need attention (brakes etc).

ive chipped the sound deadening off and am now thinking i'll do a better job finishing it off before i put the seats back in (paint etc).

i was thinking about getting some wax and grease remover, applying some wire-wheel love, then rattle-pack-black it.

do i need to do any rust prevention stuff or is my plan of attack reasonably sound?

any other things i could do while everything's out?

i think i wire wheel is going to make one hell of a mess.

maybe a think scrapper and some solvents.

Or swing by BOC Gasses and get some Dry Ice and do it that way

Dry ice and a hammer is all you need. Any other way is just stupidly wasting your time.

surely dry ice wouldn't get rid of 100%of the deadening, what about the glue residue etc which is left over?

If you've already got it all off (I'm guessing after reading what you wrote), then just bang some etch primer on and rattle black it. By the time rust is an issue you'll be wanting to race something else.

It will get rid of everything if left for long enough. I'll see if I can dig up some photos of a 79 rx7 that was done with only ice and a hammer.

All that was left was the stuff in te corners which he attacked with a small chisel.

it's metal, just like any other part of the car. if you want to do it properly, sand it, prime it, paint it.

nah not really. main thing is just to make sure it is really really clean, i guess you dont HAVE to sand it back. being an interior it will be more susceptible to being marked or damaged when getting in and out/throwing shit around etc, there is chip resistant paint you can use which is a bit tougher then your normal 2pac.

nah not really. main thing is just to make sure it is really really clean, i guess you dont HAVE to sand it back.

Be easier to source a lightly abrasive scouring pad, quick squirt over with wax and grease remover and either re-etch prime or color over.

(pic for reference only as I don't know what grades they come in).

You'd want to keep as much of the factory etch primer on as possible.

The panels are not bare metal and already have an e-coat applied from the factory so depending on how fussy you want to be you can just give it a quick scuff with a red scotchbrite (as posted above) then paint. There isn't really a need to apply a primer or etch primer.

if you use dry ice, dont spread it out like the picture above.

just leave it in a plastic bag, that way you can just keep moving it around. wear gloves obviously.

already had a heat gun and heard it could be done so gave it a crack.

the four slabs of tar in the foot wells were the easiest, just needed to apply a bit of heat then lift a corner up and the whole slab came out in one piece.

the shit under the rear seats and in the back hatch area was a different story. wouldnt come out easily so basically had to sit there, heat it all up and hack at it till it was out. fair bit of shit is left behind unlike the front of the car and i dont know how im going to get it all off yet.

residue left over from the front of the car came off EASILY with wax and grease remover.

total tool list for me was
1. heat gun
2. scraper/pick
3. wax and grease remover

My car was also stripped with the dry ice + hammer method. No residue and looks very clean, may upload a pic soonish but looks the same as above.
