Lately with a lot of people getting stickered, I've been thinking about getting permits for and future mods. Can someone please shed some light on how I would go about this?
Do I just rock up to my closest licensing centre and someone will come out and check the car or what?
Will I recieve a yellow if they say no?
Cost?
Is it possible to enquire about permits for future mods before I purchase and fit them?
How far would this go in terms of what types of mods they will give permits for and won't?

Having a permit does not mean you are exempt from getting yellow stickers.

Do not go into a licensing centre and ask about it as they will refer you to the pits..

So that when you get a sticker and are required to attend an inspection centre, the inspectors can see you are permitted to have a modification. You will still have to pay a removal fee, and you can still get stickers over and over again.

The next step above this is engineering. But also will not save you from an angry police officer, will help though.

i doubt mod plates/engineering will exempt you from an angry police officer/yellow sticker.

if they want to sticker you, they will.

Filling this out ahead of time & sending it in is the "correct" way to go about it, it takes a bit of time for them to process it (WA is #1!!!!11!!) but it will be easier. Getting permits won't make you exempt, but it's a hell of a lot easier getting them off & could help you avoid them if you have a half-decent cop

To answer your other questions, the cost can be found on the DOT site. They have probably gone up but you would have the inspection fee (~$90 first one), and the fee for the permits when all good (~$15)

As far as what permitted & what isn't, just think with common sense & it will usually be fine. You can get a high-mount & ext gate permitted if it's plumbed in, but you can't really get anything for the exhaust or suspension technically, but my coilovers were hardly questioned. As long as it's not stupidly low or tough it would probably be ok. If you want more detail, the National Code of Practice is where it's at

im not sure why you are concerned about this, your car would be dead easy to get over pits.

Straight through zorst with no cats. Obviously that is a legit (although stupid IMO) reason to sticker someone (saving for TBE). Just wanted to enquire before I go and do other shit once I get money :)

you also usually cant get permits for things like exhausts or air filters, as they are too easy to revert back.
Got this line direct from inspectors when I asked.

You can get coilovers permitted.

They need to have:

1. rebound and compression i.e. not too stiff
2. brake line and abs sensor brackets built in
3. non-adjustable from INSIDE the car i.e. airbags

Providing you engineer it correctly, it's safe and complies with the respective Aussie standards you can get lots of things engineered and permitted.

There are a lot of wild cars out there with mod plates and permits.

However

This does not make you exempt from yellow stickers, if a cop is out to give you a work order he will, even if you have it engineered and you have a permit. I have been in a friend's car that is fully engineered with permits and had the Police sticker us.... apparently 17" is a massive rim
