Hey guys I know this is going to be a stupid question...
Was wondering how hard it is to do the conversion.. I am very mechanical minded and have lots of experience with fabricating..
So what I have
The hilux is a 1990 2.8 diesel man 4x4
What do I need for the conversion?
I already have the 1jz-gte enginee complete with wiring and ecu..
Has anyone got any details on list I might need?
Custom engine mounts, bell housing, type of fly wheel clutch?
As much info on this as possible would be great many thanks steve
plenty of threads on the net about people putting jz's in hilux's.
Plan on keeping 4x4? (please do!!)

Hilux close enough :)
do the hilux have a seperate gearbox / transfare case? if so put the r154? in and use the hilux t/c, probably have to move it back i would imagain, so custom drive shafts would be in order.
how much clearence under the sump do the 1j in hilux conversions have, would imagain that could be a problem with the extra diff under there?

i will get some pictures posted up..
there is loads of clearance under the engine to front diff..
what do you mean a r154? is this the bell housing case? also where would i get one?
i 'think' thats the supra 5 speed

whole gearbox would be better? then just put the hilux transfare case on the back of it if its seperate

unsure if yours will have it, i'm not up on hilux model codes or engine sizes. what you need though is the R151 from whatever model hilux has it (i think it's the 2.8TD from memory)
you then need to use the input shaft and bellhousing from a supra R154. using these, it will all fit together, you'll have a strong gearbox, and the 4wd works as factory
^ this is why i stay out of these threads haha

I'm pretty sure you still need a custom bell housing to do the 1jz - r151f (big toyota 4wd gearbox found behind v6 hilux's/forerunners and td models or surfs have them too i think) because the input shafts are different lengths. The great thing is you can buy a bell housing to suit because lots of ppl have done it in the past. Try dellow to get the bell housing you need.
Please let me know how you go - So many surfs shit the engines and go cheap as chips and more than half of them have the right gearbox for the conversion. Plus 1/2js are reasonably priced. Not the greatest for crawling or mud but everyone could use 250/300 hp on the beach.
I have a v6 surf with blown motor about to put in the forsale. you can have first preferance :)
edit, has the r151f box
double edit, its a 4runner

but those are with r151 surf / hilux manuals
there is a fair bit of info out there

Keep us posted on your progress, if my 2.8D shits itself I will be looking down a 1JZ-GTE/2JZ-GE route and am keen to see how yours pans out!
1JZ-GTE/R154 half cut JZA70 from KYP was just priced at $3k, probably not the best deal (not sure as have never looked) but I guess it depends what the Hilux will need when the time comes.

depends , cause if u spend 3k at kyp half cut , it prob be screwed anyway and ull be up for more cash getting stuff fixed.
i know where there is a complete aristo / auto 2jzgte half cut for $2800 , just make sure u got a r151 box setup , get the bell housing and slap her in

Will keep you posted picking up a dead 1jz tonight so I can use it as a mock up,
The body will be coming off the hilux cos I am doing this right and it's getting a body lift at the same time.. Let's start the fun and games..
I take it I use the 1jz clutch flywheel to match up to the r151 gearbox set up..

Looking for my 4x4 gearbox code and I've come up with G52 /G285 does this sound right?
Also spoke to dellow conversion and they can make a plate to adapt for the 4x4 gearbox to the 1jz...

You need the big box mate.
The g52 doesnt last behind a 3.8 commo engine :(.
Try to do it minus the bodylift.

Sorry for double post, I'm not perfect.
This is a good candidate for conversion because it came with a 3l v6 engineering for 2jz shouldnt be impossible because engine is the same size. :P I would be all over it like a fat kid on a cupcake but it's just bad timing. :(

except the straight 6 is a lot longer than the V6 ...
we have a 4runner and have looked into conversions .... the 4L 1UZ is the more common as is the 3.4L 5VZ-FE out of the prado.
as mentioned the G52 will be no good, will need the R151F out of the 4runner ...
another issue (not sure on this) is the fuel setup - converting from diesel to petrol ... just because you have the hilux and the 1JZ - doesn't mean this will be a cheap and easy :D
though ... wish you all the best ... would be good fun!!

So I should have no problem using the 4 runner gearbox and bolting it and mounting it up in my duel cab hilux... Next question how much for the box?

Transplant of wiring over with engine, how difficult to get everything running?
2jzlux
30-06-2011, 07:06 PM
Wiring is the easy part need about 6 wires to get it running but the rest is fucking around getting the small stuff to work.
Mine is pretty much the same as that one but extracab 2wd manual and it doesnt go to bad.
Auto would probably be an easier way to solve the gearbox issues as they both run a340's.

get a r154 and a r150/1 mix and match parts so you dont need adapters.
g285 is a 4.3 ratio diff i would be swapping for something lower so its not screaming on hwy.

have worked on one, was set up on a 3L diesel gearbox. came in with slipping clutch..... put a new clutch in it and took it on a road test. gently pushed 3rd gear to make sure clutch didnt slip under boost and it punched the gearset out the back of the casing and fucked 3rd gear.......
definatly, dont use the 3L gearbox

99% sure this cant be done without the adapters. The r151f bellhousing bolts up to the 1j but the input shaft is too short and wont sit in the spigot bearing.

If you have access to a machine shop, thought about a T56 behind the 1jz?

My Hilux has had a V6 Conversion & Dyna box since the 90's and handles the torque fine so should be good to go with a stock JZ
